How to Have a Successful Interview

FIRST IMPRESSION:•Dress in business casual, even if it is more formal than what you would wear to work.

•Wear something you feel comfortable in. If you are uncomfortable, it shows.

•Look professional: ensure your hair and makeup are tidy. The interviewer is looking for a potential ambassador of their brand.

BE PREPARED:•Bring at least one copy of your resume and cover letter.

•Prepare a few questions to ask the interviewer.

•Think of examples of situations that showcase your strengths.

•Do some research on the company and its history.

DURING THE INTERVIEW:•Smile! Employers are looking for someone to fit in with their team. Show them how personable you are.

•Be engaged: ask questions, make eye contact, and nod while the interviewer is talking. Show that you are interested.

DURING THE INTERVIEW:•Show off your best attributes. The interviewer already knows your work experience; use the opportunity to showcase what is not on paper.

•Take notes, if applicable.

AFTER THE INTERVIEW:•Send the interviewer a thank you note the evening of your interview. It not only illustrates your gratitude, but also helps them remember you and keeps your interview fresh in the interviewer’s mind.

REMEMBER:•They are interviewing you because they are interested in you. Try not to be too nervous, it can come off as cold and standoffish.

•Everyone gets nervous before an interview. Do your research, take a deep breath, and relax.
