HPV and Young Women

The Open Door to CancerA Public Health Concern

Epidemiology

• HPV is one of the most common STD’s affecting the U.S.

• Nearly impossible to escape as a sexually active male or female!

HPV

Distribution

• CDC reports 79 million women ages 14-59 are infected with HPV.

• HPV’s prevalence in women is among college ages of 20-24 years.

Risk Factors

• Multiple Partners• Careless Sexual activity• Oral to genital sex

Biostatistics

A collection of Biological and Medical Data

Data that is analyzed and calculated to reveal trends, diseases, and risk factors among our population.

Biological Data

Human Papilloma Virus

Medical Data

• Preventative and biological impact data can be collected through a series of surveys, surveillance, blind studies, questionnaires, and many more.

• Vaccine Clinical Trials

BiomedicalHuman Papilloma virus is a complex of nucleic acid and protein.

Integrates with living cell upon entering the body.

Biomedical Con’t

• Once the virus integrates it begins to replicate.• Most HPV infections result in benign lesions.• Oncogenic cancer causing 16 & 18 is most prevalent in cervical cancer.• Can you tell which one is benign and which one is cancerous?

Social and Behavioral Factors

Social Factors

• Age• Geographical location• Lack of Healthcare

vv

Behavioral Factors

• HPV can be transmitted absent of intercourse.

• Non-coital- sexual activity without intercourse.

• Coital- sexual activity which includes intercourse.

Condoms Do Not Prevent Transmission of the Virus!!HPV can be transmitted through semen and vaginal fluids, oral to genital, genital to oral, and skin to skin

when interacting with an infected partner.Look before you dive…….literally!!

Policy

Education• Knowledge on the subject is

still low and often inaccurate. Because college aged students are at a greater risk of contracting the virus, educational measures must be taken to ensure all students are aware of the risks and are better prepared to protect themselves" (Understanding HPV, pg. 459 ).

Policy Con’tVaccination

• Vaccine information is also important.• Making sure girls, teens and adolescent
