A MESSAGEfrom Ms. Potter-Davis
Dear Huegel Families and Community Members, It’s hard to believe we are halfway through the year! This is an exciting time of year because we really see students make large leaps in their learning. You have likely received your child’s second quarter report card, which outlines the progress he or she has made so far this year. Our dedicated staff is always working hard to make sure your child continues to learn and grow to their full potential. January featured our Geography and Spelling Bees. The following students competed in our Geography Bee: Evan B, Nicholas C, Diego A, Noah H, Zach S, Lola B, Edie M, Taylor W, Anna J. and Xavier M. Congratulations to Evan for winning the Geography Bee! He will complete a written test for a chance to compete in the National Geography Bee. Good luck!
The following students competed in our Spelling Bee: Jian W, Ben Y, Diego A, Owen C, Xavier M, Max G, Mick S, Evan B, Luana

S and Kylie L. The Spelling Bee Final takes will take place on Friday, January 30. Best of luck to our spellers! The winner will go on to compete in the Madison All City Final on February 15. Now that there is finally snow we have had lots of fun playing outdoors. Students have been building snow forts and snow people. Thanks for continuing to make sure your child has the proper gear with which to enjoy winter. While we do stay indoors when the temperatures and wind chill dip below 10 below, we do make it a priority to send students outside for physical activity and fresh air. We believe that students need plenty of opportunities to move and play, and we acknowledge the research that links high levels of physical activity to better academic performance and behavior. On the following pages you’ll meet our physical education (PE) teachers, Drew Kornish and Lisa Gleboff and learn more how Huegel is supporting positive physical activity habits. I look forward to seeing families at our upcoming PTO meeting on February 10, as well as our Literacy/Math/Pizza Night, which takes place on February 17.

TECH UPDATEThanks to the persuasive efforts of 5th grade student, Alex Alvarez, our computer lab now features the education version of Minecraft. Students are pretty excited!
If all goes as planned, our classrooms will be outfitted with 70 inch televisions by mid-summer. These TVs will have the capacity to wirelessly display content from our student devices and will also be connected to our school network.

4 HUEGEL HIGHLIGHTS
Happy February Huegel families!
We take a break from PTO meetings in January to give everyone a chance to get back to their normal routines. The regular PTO meeting returns Feb. 10th at 6:00 in the Huegel library. At this meeting we will be discussing what the upcoming referendum means for Huegel. We’ll hear more about the upgrades included in the school board’s proposal. This will be a good chance to learn more about what is at stake and to get your questions answered.
In March, mark your calendars for the Spring Family Forum on March 10th. Dinner will be provided and free childcare available. The topic of this forum will be standardizing testing and assessments. This can be a confusing topic for most of us. Huegel and district staff will attend to shed some light and answer your questions. This information will help you and your child prepare for Spring testing and conferences.
This Spring and Summer, we’re giving our school garden and outdoor classroom a makeover. Do you want to help? Do you have ideas or contacts? Get in touch at huegelelem@gmail.com.
As we move into the second half of the year, it’s time to start looking forward to the next school year! If you are interested in learning more about Huegel PTO Board positions, volunteering, or chairing an event, talk to a board member or Principal Potter-Davis. All ideas are welcome, and we make our school stronger when we all share our unique skills.
Here’s to a great second semester at Huegel!
Sincerely, Jennifer Seeker Conroyjenniferseeker@gmail.com

10 HUEGEL HIGHLIGHTS
This year we are offering a wide range of physical activities to ensure each student has an opportunity to feel successful in PE. Some of the activities we already have or will be covering are, gymnastics and climbing, rollerblading, bowling, cooperation and teamwork activities, problem solving games, creative group games, and sledding. In addition we offer traditional games and skills such as football, basketball, as well as kickball.
It is our effort to develop the whole child and not just the physical aspect of growth and development. We aim to teach students everyday problem solving skills as well as basic social skills in a less structured environment than the classroom. This type of problem solving helps students feel the autonomy and empowers them to solve their own issues outside of the classroom in a safe and effective manner.

DREW KORNISH P.E./ REACH TEACHER
This is my third full year here at Huegel
The best part about Huegel is the support
I get as a new(er) teacher here at Huegel
from not only staff, but the surrounding
community as well. I feel as though I am very
welcomed into the Huegel community from
all aspects that make up a successful school
like Huegel.
I love being outdoors. My wife and I love to
hike, bike as well as rock climb. We frequent
Devils Lake as much as possible. In addition
to these activities I am the Varsity Girls as well
as Boys soccer coach at Madison East High
School. In what little free time I have left, I still
play soccer as well for a mens soccer team
in Madison.
The thing that excites me most about Huegel
and the PE program is the endless possibilities
we have to deliver a message of health,
cooperation as well as sportsmanship. I
feel as though I am teaching in a very
progressive time for PE which excites me for
the possibilities that lie ahead.
LISA GLEBOFF P.E.
This is my seventh year here at Huegel.
My favorite part of Huegel is how everyone
cares so much about each other and the
students we teach. A strong feeling of
community and working together makes
Huegel the awesome school it is. I also enjoy
the energy and enthusiasm my students bring
into the gym. They make teaching fun!
In the summer, I spend time whitewater
kayaking, canoeing, hiking. and about
anything that involves the outdoors or being
active. I also spend a lot of time taking care
of my fruit and vegetable garden. During the
LONG colder part of the year, I enjoy more
relaxing activities such as cross-country skiing,
going to a movie or concert.
I feel that Huegel is a school that has allowed
me to create an interesting curriculum.
Throughout the year, my students have
learned about cooperative games, team
sports, fitness, health, and life-time activities.
By providing a diverse choice of learning
experiences, I feel that students with different
interests and ability levels can have a positive
experience in my class.
