Human Trafficking In Eastern Europe

Daisy Korpics

Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is the trade of human life between a buyer and a seller. The

person who has been sold is expected to act as a slave. This could be in terms of labor, sex trade, or illegal

organ donations.

Facts About Human Trafficking

Between 600,000-800,000 men, women, and children are forced into the slave trade each year

27 million people are enslaved worldwide today

80% are female

half are children

1.2 million children trafficked for sex

32 billion dollars in annual profit

That’s more than Starbucks, Google, and Apple combined

Forms of Human Exploitation

Organ Harvesting

Sex Trafficking

Labor Trafficking

Political Causes

Corrupt government

Loose punishments/ no punishments for human trafficking

Very few laws to prevent trafficking

Political Effects

Government officials make it extremely easy for traffickers

Escape is almost impossible from traffickers

Social Causes

Very poor education for girls

People desperate to make money

Tons of young children living on the streets

Social Effects

Women are sometimes willing to enter the sex trade hoping to make money or just to have somewhere to live

Children are abducted off the streets into human trade

Economic Causes

Millions living in poverty

No one to provide for their families

Women and children trying to stay off the streets

Governments not doing well trying to raise income

Economic Effects

Women and children selling themselves into trade

People leaving their families to the trade in fear of not being able to support them

Solution 1: Education

Positives

Educated women would be able to make money and

sustain themselves

If important issues such as human trafficking are taught,

people would know how to better protect themselves

Negatives

This could be very expensive

The government may not support this idea because it could hurt their part of the

income

Positives

Stricter laws could make convicting human traffickers

much easier

A stronger court system and laws would severely cut

down on human trafficking

This would flush out lots of the corrupt gov’t officials

Negatives

Could be very difficult to get laws passed in Eastern

European countries

Stricter Laws: Best Solution

What I Did...

I joined the Not For Sale Organization, which is a group that fights modern day slavery by collecting money and sending out ways for people to help and spread awareness. I also donated 20$ to them.
