WHAT IS A HURRICANE? A Hurricane is an intense tropical storm with
a central low-pressure area which carries high, gusty winds exceeding 117km/hr. Thunder, lightning, dark clouds and heavy rainfall are common features of a hurricane.

NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF A HURRICANE
Disruptions of settlement- flooding, damaged infrastructure, roofs etc.

Loss of lives by drowning as well as by missiles blown by wind.

Pollution and water contamination.

Disruption in communication military lines, landslides, inundated roads

Social displacement: person have to seek shelter in schools and churches, schools sometimes have to close.

Destabilize the economy through destruction of crops and farmlands in general, especially crops susceptible to strong winds such as bananas and other fruits, flooding of fields caused crops to rot, destruction of poultry, industry sugar cane, food shortage.

POSITIVE IMPACT OF A HURRICANE Replenishes aquifer: breaks drought, increases
domestic water supply Region receives foreign exchange through
increase remittances, donations towards reconstruction
Forces adherence to proper building code Promote neighbourliness, unity and brotherhood
as members of the community/society assist each other in recovery efforts and reconstruction

Generates employment in construction industry as buildings have to be replaced and general reconstruction
