“How can I believe in an

eternal God?”(Gn.1)

“How can I believe in

eternal rocks and

dirt?”(Evol.)

God: plural (Jn.1:1-3)

Created (from nothing, Hb. 11:3) Day (5): “If the days were not days at

all, would God have countenanced the word? Does He trade in inaccuracies, however edifying? The question hinges on the proper use of language”

Days of Genesis 1

Evening and morning implies 24-hour period. Cf. 2:1-3

“The interpretation of yom as aeon, a favorite resource of harmonists of science and revelation, is opposed to the plain sense of the passage and has no warrant in Hebrew usage” (Skinner)

Ex.20:8-11

Mk.10:6

“But from the beginning of the creation,God ‘made them male and female’”

1. BeginningBeginning explains “days” of Gn.12. CreationCreation, not eternal universe3. MadeMade, not biological accidents4. HarmonyHarmony between Gn.1-2

What does the first day imply?

Ac.17:24, 27; Rv.4:11 Creator is worthy of service, praise How much more for new creation?

2 Co.5:17 Ep.4:24 (illustrated in 25-32)

I. Creation (Gn.1:1-5)

II. Resurrection (Mt.28:1)

All four writers emphasize His resurrection on first day of the weekfirst day of the week

In each case, His

resurrection was unexpected

Mt.28:1 Mk.16:2 Lk.24:1 Jn.20:1

All four writers confirm their claim with eyewitness testimony

Mt.28:8-9, women Mk.16:9, Mary Magdalene Lk.24:13-27, others Jn.20:1-10, (8 = 29); 11-16

Early meetings on firstday of the week:

Jn.20:19, 26

I. Creation (Gn.1:1-5)

II. Resurrection (Mt.28:1)

III. Consummation (Ac.2)

Day of Pentecost, Ac.2:1

Seven weeks leading to Pentecost had passed (Isa.2)

What time would be more appropriate (Mt.28:1, etc.)?

Ac.2:24-39

Lv.23:15-1615And you shall count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering: seven Sabbaths shall be completed. 16Count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath; then you shall offer a new grain offering to the LORD

1. These are ordinary sabbaths

2. Pentecost always on first day of week

Significance of the first day

Resurrection of Christ; appearances; outpouring of HS; new covenant…

Jewish tradition(Mt. Sinai):

WindFire

Voices

Acts 2(Mt. Zion):As wind (2)As fire (3)Voices (4)

I. Creation (Gn.1:1-5)

II. Resurrection (Mt.28:1)

III. Consummation (Ac.2)

IV. Edification (Ac.20)

Acts 20

Roman time: midnight to midnight (as modern nations)

Based on Gn.1:5, some churches offer Lord’s supper on Saturday night

Jewish day:From sunset to sunset6:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The evidence

1. Disciples: first day, Jn.20:19, 26; Ac.2

2. Troas: first day, Ac.20:7 (= Jn.20:19)

3. Churches: every first day, 1 Co.16:1-2

““The day was already considered as a special The day was already considered as a special one, and one more than others fittingone, and one more than others fitting

for the performance of a religious duty” for the performance of a religious duty”

More on 1 Co.16:1-2

Church(es) at Corinth / Galatia: collective activity, not individual, 1

Collection: of public collections, 1 Churches chose messengers, 3 2 Co.8:6, “complete” what?

1. Disciples, Jn.20 2. Troas, Ac.20 3. Corinth and others, 1 Co.16

4. Unleavened bread / fruit of vine recall His death; first day, His resurrection. Why separate them? On Saturday, He was still in the

grave; recalls only His burial

It’s not difficult to understand

“On Sunday evening, not Saturday even-ing; Luke is not using the Jewish reckon-ing from sunset to sunset but the Roman reckoning from midnight to midnight: although it was apparently after sunset when they met, ‘break of day’ (vs 11) was ‘on the morrow’ (vs 7)” – F. F. Bruce, Ac.20:7

Paul preached Midnight (7) Paul talked

1st day 2nd day Daybreak, 11 (Next day, 7)

“But they ‘laid aside’ their contributions ‘at home’” (1 Co.16)

If at home, why store it on Sunday? Even if at home, “the money set aside

was brought on that day to the church when it assembled for worship” (ZPEB 3, 964)

Keeping their money at home would defeat Paul’s purpose (2)
