and Administrators

PresentersMeg Ormiston, School Technology Presenter

November 22, 2008

Objective of session…

• Familiarize you with various Web 2.0 tools

• There is not enough time to teach tools• Explain why schools should be using

Web 2.0 tools• Board members or administrators can

take at least one idea back and attempt to use

How many of these terms do you know?

What is a Wiki?

Wiki is…

• A wiki is a page or collection of Web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language.

• "Wiki" (/wiːkiː/) is a Hawaiian word for "fast"[4].

Don’t get stuck on the technology escalator…

•Chinese students start mandated English as second language training in grade 3.

•There will be more English speaking high school graduates in China this year than high school graduates in all of North America.

As promised, President-elect Barack Obama and his transition team have put his weekly radio address on

YouTube so that all can see him deliver it. The plan is to continue doing this once he becomes president.

Instead of IT (Instructional Technology)

Call it LT (Learning Technology)

Who makes the decision in your school district about

access to Internet and technology?

Who should be making that decision?

Many say you can do anything with

technology…

I guess you can.

How many of you believe your children or grandchildren know more

about technology than you do?

Why is this?

Students are different today

Net GenerationGeneration Y

• 97% own a computer• 97% have downloaded music• 94% own a cell phone• 76% use instant messaging• 75% of college students have a Facebook

profile• 60% own iPods• 34% use websites as their primary source of

news• 28% author a blog and 44% read blogs

• Students are more engaged outside of school than in school

• Students are content developers through their own social networking sites

• Students use email, IM, Twitter and other Web 2.0 tools that are all banned in schools

Authentic Learning

• When students do work in Web 2.0 it is never done.

• In a school once a teacher grades the paper the student is finished. In a Web 2.0 world, the student can post his/her paper on the net and people who are interested in similar topics may blog with the student.

21st Century Ideas

• Cell phones are the technology of the future• Movies have great impact on learning• Use Google to set up your own search engine• MySpace users would outnumber all countries in

the world but two• Social networking encourages divergent

thinking, school is all about convergence• Use videos of good teachers teaching• Students no longer live in a paper and pencil

world

Be careful not to make a $1,200 piece of equipment a glorified

pencil.

Wikinomics

• Principles– Open doors to the world– Co-innovates with everyone– Share resources that used to be guarded– Harness power of mass-collaboration

TodayFlickr beats Webshots

Wikipedia beats Encyclopedia Britannica

Blogger beats CNN

Epinions beats Consumer Reports

Google Maps beats Map Quest

MySpace beats friendster

Craiglist beats monistor

Why?

• Peering– When masses of people and firms collaborate

openly to drive innovation and growth in their industries (MySpace, YouTube, linux, Wikipedia)

• Blogosphere– Self-organized network of personal commentary

sites that are updated every day

• Wiki– Software that allows the users to edit the content

of web pages - Wikipedia is bigger than Encyclopedia Britannica

• Web 2.0 is about the communities, participation and peering.

What is Web 2.0?

• Instead of always downloading information off the web, you interact with information on the web.

• Superintendents join the IASA Ning to learn from each other.

• Board members and administrators can set up their own blogs to communicate with the community.

• Information flows both ways.

Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti resignsBy Jim Kirk | Tribune staff reporter9:39 PM CDT, August 26, 2008

Jay Mariotti, the opinionated and polarizing sports columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, told the Chicago Tribune he resigned on Tuesday after 17 years with the paper.

Just back from Beijing where he wrote about the Summer Olympics, Mariotti said in a phone interview Tuesday night that he decided to quit after it became clear while in China that sports journalism had become "entirely a Web site business. There were not many newspapers there.'' He added that most of the journalists covering the Games were "there writing for Web sites.''

What is a Ning?• Ning hopes to compete with large social sites like

MySpace and Facebook, by appealing to users who want to create networks around specific interests or have limited technical skills.[6]

• The unique feature of Ning is that anyone can create their own custom social network for a particular topic or need, catering to specific audiences. Many educators are using ning for developing educational resources.

• Features were customized so that participants could upload pictures and videos of student developed projects as well as links to blogs and Flickr.

Do you want to know how to make a professional looking podcast?

First you need to know what podcasting is?

Have you ever heard of “Ask a Ninja?”

Ask a NinjaWhat is Podcasting?

You will learn that the “pod” in podcasting is not a group of whales but rather “Personal

Evaluation of Technology

November Learning 9 Essential Questions

• Is there a shared vision?• Does the infrastructure hinder

instruction?• Are you using a variety of

methods to support the use of technology?

• Does the administration model technology use?

• Are you using the power of the computer and the Internet to change teaching and learning?

• Does instruction foster creativity and support alternative learning styles?

• Is learning taking place 24/7?

• Is your staff development focused on the curriculum more than the tools?

• Are you using the power of technology to connect with homes?

Walk-Throughs

Make long URL’s shorter

• Long url's can be made shorter at tinyurl.com

Who is linked to your school?

• Go to AltaVista website

• Start with link: in the search box

• Then type in your school URL

• Remember to leave no space before or after the colon.

Internet Grammar

• Truncating a URL– Start with the top address and remove one

level at a time.• http://web.mac.com/rvoltz/Site/Podcast/Podcast

.html• http://web.mac.com/rvoltz/Site/Podcast/• http://web.mac.com/rvoltz/Site/• http://web.mac.com/rvoltz/

Read the URL

• Do you recognize the domain name?– .k12– .edu– .ac– .com– .org– .gov– .net– .mil

Blogs

• Administrative uses– Once a week a superintendent can blog about

a subject he/she picks– Public has an opportunity to blog back– Administrator does not need to read and for

sure should not react to all blogs– A wise citizen once told me to communicate

all the time, not just when the school district needed money.

Technology Tips• Use your phone call system for more than just

calling out to students• Learn how to embed a video into a PowerPoint

presentation• Learn how to podcast using GarageBand• Learn how to podcast using Camtasia or ProfCast• Learn how to use Google documents to group plan a

meeting or an agenda or a project• Learn how to blog as a superintendent

RV uses…

• Podcasts when running– Twit– Fitness Rocks– Audio Ed Online– Audible (Books on line; A Whole New Mind)

• IASA website– Education News Clips– RSS feeds

RV productivity tools

• Smart Phone• iWeb• ProfCast• iShowyou• Skype• Jott• Portable wireless

modem• GarageBand• iTunes

• Gcast• Wikispaces• Outlook pushed• Gotomeeting• ZillaTube• Jing

More ideas with technology

• Use video to record best teacher for other teachers to view.

• Establish PLC’s and communicate via the Internet (works for small schools as well as large schools)

• Share documents using Google Docs• Have teachers engage students with

students in other countries via Skype

How RV uses Outlook

• Push emails to your phone• Make calendar reminders for “To Do” list• Schedule appointments with number of

minutes warning you need to make the appointment then set vibrate

• If you go by an email do you ever go back?

• Put read emails in folders
