Why Go Green?
The global governance of the environment The consciousness that our current life style and production
practices will destroy the future of our children if we continue in the same rhythm and actual mode of development is now global
What is evident nowadays took over 20 years to impose itself The outcome of the report “Club of Rome” published in 1972
was the first serious study highlighting the ecological danger related to the economic & demographic growth of the globe in addition to the foreseen penury of its fossil energetic resources
The conclusion was radical, it proposed to substitute the
growth logic by the equilibrium logic

Green Building
Green building is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource efficient throughout a building's life cycle.
Green building design and construction practices that meet specified standards will help resolve much of the negative impact that buildings have on their occupants and on the environment.
The term "green building" is often used as a synonym for sustainable construction and high-performance building.
In short, high-performance buildings are designed and built to minimize
resource consumption, reduce life cycle costs, maximize health and productivity for the building's occupants, and improve environmental performance.

Project -R-
Project R offers a disaster relief housing alternative for rural areas. Using destruction rubble for reconstruction, it develops the Gabion system into a full-fledged architectural system. Project R received wide media coverage, and a couple of awards Project R concept is adapted to built permanent housing in HAITI after the earthquake disaster. The system is still evolving to finding the best balance to accommodate local needs It is now being tested in Ghana, using local material to replace the steel mesh (bamboo) and the concrete rubble (dried mud)

HAITI GHANA
Sustainability Solutions Conference March 2011
Project -R-
It involves entrapping rubble in wire mesh cages to build, at 40%-50% the cost of prefabricated houses, multipurpose single-story structures whose construction requires 2-3 weeks, minimal training and equipment, and employs local communities. The units, though designed for temporary relief, are durable. Environment-friendly, they can be recycled into nature. Project R can be propagated in modular fashion as part of a comprehensive community recovery strategy.

The system’s vertical structure consists of steel mesh casing (Gabion) modules, each filled with one meter cube of concrete rubble. Modules are lined with gypsum boards from the inside; incorporating vertical modules for windows and doors. Gypsum is used for internal space subdivision. The system floor is the same as the vertical elements, complemented by pouring an 8cm slab as finish. The system roof is out-of-factory modular lightweight steel insulated sandwich panels over a primary light steel structure. No external finish is needed: the walls can be covered with greenery. From the remains of a 150m2 house, a 78m2 house can be built. The prototype built has passed that test, performing mechanically on heat exchange and water infiltration levels.

Project -R-
The units are capable of spatially accommodating different design needs and functional allocations as clinics, schools, or communal spaces. Though designed for temporary relief, the units are durable. Environment-friendly, they embody an example of green and sustainable architecture and can be dismantled for use in rehabilitating old quarries, riverbanks, as retaining walls or bridge embankments.

Haigazian University Heritage Building
Built in the 1920 century, part of a heritage quarter in Ras Beirut, one of the most cultural and diversified area of Beirut.
Sustainability Solutions Conference March 2011
Original building description:
-The building external and internal walls are sand stone bearing walls -The slabs are 15 cm reinforced concrete (mild steel) -Fer forger and decorative concrete balustrades, white Carrara marble tiles, colored patterned terrazzo tiles, wood shutters, wood windows, decorative concrete and stone ornamentations, pitched red tiles roof over a wood structure -The floor area is 235 m2; the story clear height is 485 cm -The number of floors is four with a pitched roof -The building has a basement of 75 m2with 220cm clear height -The building footings are continuous under all bearing walls and are cyclopean concrete with rubble stone.
Haigazian University Heritage Building
Proposed works:
-Keep the external walls. -Remove all the interior slabs and walls -Underpinning the external walls by 15 cm micro piles -Reclaim a full basement with 330cm clear height -Rebuild the building from the inside
-Retie the old to the new structure
-Incorporate a lift and state of the art modern equipments
-The resulting building will be designed to respect all applicable seismic, fire, handicapped accessibility norms

How sustainability was served in the project:
-External walls were kept -A width of 70 cm of all slabs and internal walls along the perimeter of the building was kept -Internal sand stone walls were sold to be recycled -Slabs mild reinforcement steel was sold to be recycled -Concrete ruble was given away to be recycled as part of the aggregates (40%) used for the precast concrete elements industry
