Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education (Seven Principles)

Basic Functions in Desire2Learn (D2L)

1987: Chickering and Gamson, “Seven Principles”

Educationally Crucial Activities

1. Student-faculty contact2. Student-student collaboration3. Active learning4. Prompt feedback5. Time on task6. Higher expectations7. Value diverse ways of learning

1. Encourages Contact Between Students and FacultyMeaning Desire2Learn Tools Other ToolsFrequent student-faculty contact in and out of classes is the most important factor in student motivation and involvement. Faculty concern helps students get through rough times and keep on working. Knowing a few faculty members well enhances students' intellectual commitment and encourages them to think about their own values and future plans.

• Email • News (Announcement) • Discussion Board• Chat

• Instant messaging: Skype• Web conferencing: Dimdim• Social network: Facebook, LinkedIn

2. Develops Reciprocity and Cooperation Among StudentsMeaning Desire2Learn Tools Other ToolsLearning is enhanced when it is more like a team effort than a solo race. Good learning, like good work, is collaborative and social, not competitive and isolated. Working with others often increases involvement in learning. Sharing one’s ideas and responding to others’ improves thinking and deepens understanding.

• Groups • Wiki• Blog • Google Docs• Voicethread

3. Encourages Active LearningMeaning Desire2Learn Tools Other ToolsLearning is not a spectator sport. Students do not learn much just sitting in classes listening to teachers, memorizing prepackaged assignments, and spitting out answers. They must talk about what they are learning, write reflectively about it, relate it to past experiences, and apply it to their daily lives. They must make what they learn part of themselves.

• Discussion Board

Strategies:• Instructional scaffolding• Create assignments that require students to

react to real life scenarios, etc.• Orchestrate interactive group projects • Use the Self-Tests for active review of materials• Vary the choice of ways students can complete

assignment

4. Gives Prompt FeedbackMeaning Desire2Learn Tools Other ToolsKnowing what you know and don’t know focuses your learning. In getting started, students need help in assessing their existing knowledge and competence. Then, in classes, students need frequent opportunities to perform and receive feedback on their performance. At various points during college, and at its end, students need chances to reflect on what they have learned, what they still need to know, and how they might assess themselves.

• Dropbox• Quiz

Strategies:• Let students know what type of feedback to

expect from you & how often it will be provided• Post the grading schedule• Publish “office hours” on the course website• Hold “office hours” by video-conferencing,

email, phone, etc.

5. Emphasizes Time on Task

Meaning Desire2Learn Tools Other ToolsTime plus energy equals learning. Learning to use one’s time well is critical for students and professionals alike. Allocating realistic amounts of time means effective learning for students and effective teaching for faculty.

• Content (Calendar)• Schedule• Release Conditions• Timed Quiz and Dropbox

6. Communicates High ExpectationsMeaning Desire2Learn Tools Other ToolsExpect more and you will get it. High expectations are important for everyone — for the poorly prepared, for those unwilling to exert themselves, and for the bright and well motivated. Expecting students to perform well becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

• Content area (Syllabus, activity instructions)• Statistics (Quiz)

Strategies:• Provide examples of expected quality of work • Release statistics along with grades, so that

students can see how they are performing as compared to the rest of the class (stats can give the mean grade and/or the frequencies).

• Use the "Release Conditions" feature to release course info only as students achieve a certain level of success on a test.

7. Respects Diverse Talents and Ways of LearningMeaning Desire2Learn Tools Other ToolsMany roads lead to learning. Different students bring different talents and styles to college. Brilliant students in a seminar might be all thumbs in a lab or studio; students rich in hands-on experience may not do so well with theory. Students need opportunities to show their talents and learn in ways that work for them. Then they can be pushed to learn in new ways that do not come so easily.

• Content area • Discussion • Survey

• E-learning authoring and screencast software : Adobe Captivate, Camtasia Studio

Strategies:• Utilize technologyo Post audio and/or video recordings of

lectures o Use graphics to supplement written

information o Provide a dynamic, synchronous, interactive

learning environment through chat and videoconferencing

A learning management system (LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, and reporting of training programs, classroom and online events, e-learning programs, and training content
