Carnival is a festival of ancient origins, a little

religious and pagan at the same time, it starts at

Epiphany until Ash Wednesday.

The modern carnival, has lost its original meaning

was the religious one, and has assumed that of a

folk festival, which is kept alive and cultivated for

not losing the old traditions. For this, in our

country, the Carnival has taken today a significant

impact in those cities which, already in the past,

had great traditions, such as Viareggio in

Tuscany and Venice in the Veneto region.

In Venice, all the city is transformed at carnival time and the

old masks around on the “calli” and “gondole”, bring the

observer on a magic journey back in the time.

Viareggio, is instead famous for the

floats parades, on which big papier-

machè masks, satirize current affairs

and prominent people.

The Carnival citadel of Viareggio is the biggest and most

important centre dedicated to the masks.

Here you can find the builders labs, the hangars where are

made the huge floats, two museums, a historic

documentary centre.

These buildings overlook a big square ,that in summer is

used to put on great shows.

Carnival is a funny and festive

procession: you can dress up and

decide to wear the fancy dress you

want to, but long time ago the typical

masks were those belonging to the

characters of the “commdia dell’ arte”

and slapstick comedy such as

Harlequin , Columbine , Punch

(Pulcinella) and many others.

THE CHARACTERS OF THE

“COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE”

The masks of “commedia dell’arte” Punch,

Harlequin, Pantaloon, and many others which

succeded in portraying typical people of society

of that time, appeared in theatres from 16th to 17th

century.

Their masks are still the most worn to dress up at

carnival time so that, the characters of “commedia

dell’arte”, are revived in the streets, instead of on

stage.

d

Harlequin

This is the most famous mask and

it comes from Bergamo in

Lombardia.

His multi-coloured, strange dress

is due to his generous

friends,when, for the Carnival

occasion, they gave him some

pieces of cloth of their costumes,

so that he could have a nice

custom too.

Brighella

Is a servant from Bergamo in

the north of Italy. He is a

cunning fellow who likes

arguing (its name means

quarrel).

He wears a black mask, a

jacket,a cape and white

trousers with green

decorations.

Brighella

Anche lui servitore

bergamasco. Brighella è

furbo, non ha scrupoli,

non rispetta nessuno e

ama litigare (il suo nome

deriva da briga = lite). Il

suo costume è

composto da una mezza

maschera nera,

giacchetta, mantellina e

pantaloni bianchi con

decorazioni verdi.

Meneghino

Is the traditional mask from

Milan, whose name comes from a

class of servants who

accompanied the gentlemen to

church on Sunday or walking and

is the symbol of the faithful

servant .

It has got a brown tricorn , a wig

with a ponytail , brown jacket ,

green shorts and white sockings

with red and white or colored

stripes.

Gianduia

Is the mask from Turin . He

wears a brown costume edged

in red, and a yellow waistcoat

and red socks , he wears a wig

with a ponytail .

He is an honest man , who likes

the wine and to be jolly, he is

such a good guy who has

common sense and courage

Pantalone

A typical venetian fancy dress

which represents the typical

old, rich, growling and stingy

merchant.

The costume is made up of a

woolly cap and a red jacket. He

wears a black cloak, often lined

of red and black slippers with

the points upwards.

His black mask with a hooked

nose, marked eyebrows and a

curious pointed beard is very

peculiar.

Columbine

Is a simple Venetian

mask with a dress

sometimes in colored

patches such as

Harlequin, finished

with a pretty white cap

and apron of the

same color.

Stenterello

It's a Tuscan mask,and was

called Stenterello for his slender

figure.

He wears on his head a kind of a

boat hat, a wig with a ponytail,a

long blouse made of blue cloth, a

yellow waistcoat, black shorts,

stockings of different colours one

is red, the other instead is with

white and blue stripes.

It is a greedy, lazybones, coward,

fool guy, hounded by his

creditors and misfortune.

Pulcinella (Punch)

It's a famous mask from

Naples and one of the most

popular in italy.

His costume, is characterized

by a white shirt and porter

trousers, a hat made by bread

of sugar, mustache, and

beard.

He's a lazy character.

He is always very hungry

cheeky and has a bigmouth.

Tartaglia

It ' a mask from Naples.

It took its name

“Tartaglia”(stuttere)

because of the

stuttering way of talking

which distinguished this

mask. Tartaglia is a

hilarious and funny

character he never

plays tragic or sad

roles.
