However, X had a love-hate relationship with Y, and the two frequently clashed, most famously in May 2002. Y criticized X for missing team practices and X defended himself with what would become a famous and oft-quoted monologue:

• X: “…We're sitting here, and I'm supposed to be the franchise player, and we're talking about practice. I mean listen, we're sitting here talking about practice, not a game, not a game, not a game, but we're talking about practice. Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game like it's my last but we're talking about practice man. How silly is that? …”

• (In all X used the word practice 20 times)

• Y(the next day): “He said "practice" more times than he's actually practiced.”

• Y left the team in 2003, X left in 2006.

• In an article which he wrote in 1949, famous cricket historian and commentator, John Arlott describes a phenomenon. He termed the phenomenon as ‘X’. ‘X’ according to him was first witnessed on a momentous day in 1882 when England twice seemed to have a test match won only to see it snatched away both times in the face of all probability and eleven great English cricketers.

• ‘X’ means single minded determination to win – to win within the laws but, if necessary, to the last limit within them. It means that where the ‘impossible’ is within the realm of human body can do, there are ‘Y’ who think they can do it- and who have succeeded often enough to make us wonder if anything is impossible to them. It means that ‘Y’ have never lost a test match until the last run is scored or their last wicket has fallen.
