RELEVANCE FOR

TEACHER

Focus for teachers and educatorsEducational Technology (ET) for teachers has focus

on

the process of applying tools and aids of audio-visual movements including modern ICTs for classroom instructional purposes

Honing visual and presentation skills developing relevant teaching-learning materials.

A relevant commentSaettler (1990) has urged “The historical

function of educational technology is a process rather than a product.“

As teachers and educators, we must talk about 'Technology in Education' as 'Media and Audiovisual Communications' to aid learning by students rather than 'ET' as a discipline of study itself.

Audiovisual movementAudiovisual movement: ways of delivering

information that could be used as alternatives to lectures and books.

It has created a need for teacher training to make them skilled audio-visual communicators. Visual skills have become important for teachers.

Audiovisual communicationsAudiovisual communications is concerned

primarily with the design and use of textual information or content, audio and visual messages which make the learning process, enlivened, effective and efficient.

The use of modern instructional technologies require training in basic visual skills to produce material for audio-visual use.

There is need to enhance process skills of teachers and educators in the use of multimedia and digital technologies.

Features of Over-Head ProjectorSimple and robustMuch cheaper than computerLess costly presentation material: Transparencies and

markersEasy and quick to prepareFlexible than chalkboardAllows facing the audience and display materialCan use slides as notes in graphics and traced

pictures.Easy to change or tailor presentation to different

audiencesVariety of useAttention span care: 2 - 5 min. per slide

Slides are best used for~Highlighting key points as single words or

short phrases~Illustrating material in the form of charts or

diagrams, e.g. drawings of equipment, ~organization charts or spider diagrams

~Summarizing ~diagrams clear, large and simple through

tracing or scanned images~Use colours for highlighting

OHP: Good to make a beginning for technology in educationThe projector is quiet, ‘user-friendly’

and clean ETRequires hardly any technical

knowledge operating it, apart, of course, from the ability to change the lamps occasionally.

Basic and simple skills are required on the part of the teachers to produce transparencies
