2. Provide accurate full-text citations in

your bibliography.

paper or speech.

Here are the three

most common types

of in-text citations:

Using someone else’s

exact words

in your own work.

DIRECT QUOTES1

Summarizing a

few sentences or paragraphs

of someone else’s work.

PARAPHRASE2

SUMMARY3

Providing a

brief overview (just the main points)

of an entire article, book chapter, or report.

Within the body of your paper, you

must identify where you have

included ideas and words that aren’t

your own.

In the bibliography at the end of

your paper, you need to help the

reader locate the sources where you

found those ideas.

Now, let’s look at

some examples…

DIRECT QUOTES

Requires quotation marks

around the quote, and an in-text

citation in parenthesis.

An in-text citation for a direct quote

should include:

1. the author’s name

2. the page number where the quote

appeared and sometimes…

3. the year the article was published

(used in APA style but not MLA)

Example A:

Country superstar Taylor Swift’s first

album, Fearless was the “top-selling,

as well as most awarded, album of

2009 ” (Saxton, 62).
