U.S. News & World ReportUCLA is No. 1 among public universities and
ranks 20th among all national universities in
the USN&WR Best Colleges rankings. Five other
University of California campuses rank in the
top 15 among public universities: UC Berkeley
(2nd), UC Santa Barbara (7th), UC Irvine (9th),
UC San Diego (10th) and UC Davis (11th). Despite
its popularity, the USN&WR rankings tell only part
of the story. The rankings, which have had some
controversy, place more emphasis on factors
that tend to favor private universities, such as
endowment size, rate of alumni giving and student-
faculty ratios. Nevertheless, it can be a useful
tool that focuses largely on factors related to
undergraduate education.

UCLA performs very well in all the national and international rankings of the best public and private universities, including the most widely known list published by U.S. News & World Report.
The following is an overview of some of the more significant and well-known national and
international rankings. It includes information on UCLA’s standing, as well as commentary
that explains the factors used to determine the rankings. The charts provide a snapshot of
UCLA’s standing in these rankings vis-à-vis other top-tier research universities, both public
and private.

U.S. News & World Report’s Global RankingsUSN&WR introduced a new global ranking of universities in 2014.
The methodology for this ranking is very different from the publication’s
U.S. ranking system. It gives much more weight to academic research and
reputation, as well as graduate and professional school quality. That’s
why UC San Francisco — which has no undergraduate enrollment — is
No. 15 in the global rankings but not included in the U.S. rankings. In
the 2020 USN&WR global rankings, UCLA is 14th in the world. Other UC
campuses in the top 25 are UC Berkeley (4th) and UC San Diego (19th).

Washington MonthlyWashington Monthly’s university rankings are unique because there’s an emphasis
on the societal benefits of major research universities, including access, social
commitment and the importance of research as a major driver of the economy and
quality of life. In Washington Monthly’s 2019 annual list, UCLA ranked 12th out of
395 national universities.
Half of UCLA’s undergraduates participate in some form of community service,
such as tutoring youths, adults and incarcerated juveniles. This community service
addresses the health and educational needs of underserved communities; combats
poverty and homelessness; and provides legal, social, medical and educational
assistance to local residents.
More than a third of UCLA undergraduates receive Federal Pell Grants, which help
provide upward mobility. UCLA’s freshmen graduation rate exceeds 90%, among
the top in the nation.

The Center for Measuring University PerformanceIn 2018, the most recent ranking, the center placed UCLA among the nation’s
top research universities — both public and private. This ranking focuses on
nine key measures of university research performance, including competitively
awarded research grants and contracts, faculty membership in the national
academies, faculty awards, the number of doctorates awarded and other
factors. UCLA was ranked in the top 25 among all research universities in eight
of these measures, including:
8th in the nation in producing doctorates
12th in the nation in total research expenditures
14th in the nation in faculty awards

Hospital RankingsU.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT’S BEST HOSPITALS
UCLA Health’s hospitals in Westwood and Santa Monica have ranked
6th in the USN&WR 2019–20 Best Hospitals Honor Roll. The Honor
Roll highlights 20 hospitals — out of more than 4,500 nationwide —
that excelled in 16 specialties and nine procedures and conditions.
Other Marks of ExcellenceFor the fiscal year ending June 30, 2019, the campus received approximately $1.2 billion in awarded
research grants and contracts, the eighth time UCLA has exceeded the $1 billion mark.
UCLA is the most popular campus in the nation, with more than 135,000 freshmen and transfer student
applicants for fall 2019. More than 5,900 freshmen and 3,200 new transfers enrolled. Among admitted
California high school seniors, more than 80% graduated in the top 9% of their class.
A distinguished faculty is the cornerstone of any great university. At UCLA, seven faculty members have
been awarded the Nobel Prize. The faculty has had 11 National Medal of Science winners, 15 MacArthur
Foundation Fellows, three Pulitzer Prize winners and hundreds of recipients of Guggenheim, Sloan,
Fulbright-Hays and other leading academic grants, fellowships and awards.
Doctoral Research RankingsNATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL
The NRC compiles the premier assessment of the nation’s doctoral
research programs. In its most recent ranking in 2010, the NRC
placed many of UCLA’s graduate programs in its highest ranks. Of
the 59 UCLA programs evaluated by the NRC, 40 placed within
the top 10. Only two other universities — UC Berkeley (48) and
Harvard University (46) — had more programs that extended to
the top 10.
