The Benefits of Sustainability
Health Benefits: ResidentsEffect of a Purpose in Life on Risk of Incident Alzheimer Disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment in Community-Dwelling Older PersonsResidents involved with a greater cause like developing sustainability programs for future generations can bring “purpose” to their lives.
Following almost 1,000 people (age 80, on average) for up to seven years, Dr. Boyle’s team found that the ones with high purpose scores were 2.4 times more likely to remain free of Alzheimer’s than those with low scores. Purpose in life, all by itself, appears to have a potent ability to improve and extend lives.Being engaged in “purposeful” activities is “a very robust predictor of health and wellness in old age.” http://archpsyc.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=210648
