Context : Energy Situation in Bangladesh
Around 100 Million people have no access to grid electricity
Only 3% people have access to gas through pipelines
Lack of energy is one of the major reasons for rural backwardness
There is potential of 4 million Biogas plants in the country
Climate in Bangladesh is suitable for Biogas production

Biogas
Biogas is produced decomposing organic materials (mainly animal wastes) in an anaerobic condition. Major component of this gas is methane (CH4). It has no color, smell and it burns like natural gas. This Biogas use cooking, power to lighting.
Why Biogas?
Our climate is suitable for biogas production Raw materials are easily available Technology is simple and locally available All hazardous materials are the raw materials
of a biogas digester like poultry farm waste No access of natural gas in rural area Shortage of electricity Environmental Development
Improvements of Biogas System

Economic of Biogas Technology • Saving of expenditures on fuel sources
• Saved time to utilize in other income generation activities
• Enhanced soil productivity because of the use bio-slurry (added N,P,K values)
• Reduction in the quantity of chemical fertilizers due to the use of bio-slurry
• Reduction on health expenditures due to decrease in smoke-borne diseases
• Employment to local people
• Private sector development that produces economic goods
• Development of Livestock
Other Benefits of Biogas• Reduction of work load, especially for
woman• Biomass Saving• Useable Organic Fertilizer • Better sanitation (if toilets attached)• Improvement of health condition by
reducing Indoor Air Pollution (IAP)• Employment generation• Reduction of green house gas emission

Case Study: Mr. Johir, ChittagonjCase Study: Mr. Johir, Chittagonj• Poultry Farm: Constructed 2 biogas plants of size: 80m3 with the
technical support from RREC in 2009, has a 15000 birds.
• Total cost :Tk. 6,00000/-
• His own investment was :Tk. 6,00000/-
• He did not take any loan from Any Bank • Biogas plant owner supply gas community based cooking purpose : 65 families & 10 KW power generation.
• He collecting/ Rent Tk.500/- per family/month ie Tk.32500/month
• Payback period is only 18 months/ 1.5 Year
Case Study: Mr. Afser, ChittagonjCase Study: Mr. Afser, Chittagonj• Poultry Farm: Constructed 2 biogas plants of size: 250m3 with the
technical support from RREC in 2011, has a 75000 birds.
• Total cost :Tk. 1700000/-
• His own investment was :Tk. 1700000/-
• He did not take any loan from Any Bank • Biogas plant owner supply gas community based cooking purpose : 70 families & 30 KW power generation
• He collecting/ Rent Tk.700/- per family/month ie Tk.49000/month• Oil save & slurry proposes income 40000/ month
• Payback period is only 19 months/ 1.6 Year
Case Study: Mr. Kamal, ChittagonjCase Study: Mr. Kamal, Chittagonj
• Poultry Farm: Constructed 3 biogas plants of size: 200m3 with the technical support from RREC in 2013, has a 30000 birds.
• Total cost :Tk. 1600000/-
• He take loan from AB Bank • Biogas plant owner supply gas community based cooking purpose : 50 families (now) But planning should be supply 120
families & 10 KW power generation • He collecting/ Rent Tk.1000/- per family/month ie Tk.50000/month• Oil save & slurry proposes income 25000/ month
• Payback period will be 15 months/ 1.25 Year

• Poultry Farm: Constructed 2 biogas plants of size: 120m3 with the technical support from RREC in 2011, has a 20000 birds.
• Total cost :Tk. 1200000/-
• He take loan from BRAC Bank • Biogas plant owner supply gas community based cooking purpose : 40 families & 5 KW power generation • He collecting/ Rent Tk.1000/- per family/month ie Tk.40000/month• Oil save & slurry proposes income 25000/ month
• Payback period will be 18 months/ 1.5 Year• Interesting Message 1st year flood affected slurry open the paddy
land & finally paddy production very good and local farmer aware.
