An NDF Lance-Corporal in Os-hakati was locked up for making death threats against Prime Minis-ter and Swapo Vice President Hage Geingob, and Oshana Police Re-gional Commander, Commissioner Ndahangwapo Kashihakumwa.

Thomas Enkono (55) allegedly made the remarks after a drinking spree at his shebeen at Oshimbangu location, just a stone’s throw from the NDF Regional headquarters in Os-hakati. The death threats were report-edly made with tribalistic undertones against Geingob, for being the ruling party’s presidential candidate and not being from Enkono’s own language group.

The allegations were taken serious-ly, so much so, that the police went to search Enkono’s homestead at Onepu-ta village in Oshikoto Region. He was also hauled before a military tribunal and his fate is yet to be decided.

The shebeen, which Enkono owns, is infamously known in the commu-nity as the very liquor outlet where an NDF soldier from Otavi, who was attending a vocational training course at Valombola Centre in Ongwediva, was last seen drinking with a woman he later strangled to death last year. This was apparently done because she squandered his money, but refused him sex.

Enkono is charged with assault through threatening to eliminate Kashihakumwa out of revenge, for having been arrested last year follow-ing the strangling of a woman at his shebeen. The second charge he is fac-

ing is obstruction of justice for resisting arrest.

Kashihakumwa confirmed the recent arrest of Enkono, who spent about a week behind bars and was granted bail of N$1 000 on Monday, 4 November. His case was remanded to 22 January 2014 for further investigation.

Kashihakumwa said he is not aware of any threats made against other national leaders,

including the prime minister, but he confirmed that such threats were made against him.

The spokesperson of the Min-istry of Defence, Lieutenant-Colonel Monica Sheya, who said she has been out of the office, is not aware of the incident, but promised to investigate the mat-ter. Her deputy, Captain Hendrik Swartbooi, could also not shed light on the issue.

Trustco’s record interim results

TRUSTCO will not deviate from its financial strategy, regard-less of the fact that the group’s managing director, Quinton van Rooyen has to pay back more than N$8 million because the group under his leadership did not reach the projected targets.

“I have to set the example, and therefore no extra-ordinary bo-nuses were paid out to the more than 1 000 employees in the pre-vious financial year. These tar-gets were also not met in 2010, and I also received no fees for that year,” said Van Rooyen.

In terms of a SENS-notice on Trustco results for the first six months, ending September this year, a management agreement between the group and Next In-vestments, of which Van Rooyen is the sole shareholder, is in ex-istence. According to it, the self-set financial targets should be reached, otherwise Van Rooyen has to return some of the fees paid to him back to the group.

“We are setting very high standards, and the repayment does not mean that the financial results of the group are poor. It is good results, but in comparison to the targets that we promised our more than 3 000 sharehold-ers, mostly Namibians, we al-ways strife to do better.”

The profit of the group, after tax increased with 29% to a re-cord amount of N$65 million, compared to the N$50 million of the preceding six months.

Trustco’s African activities and products are also slowly penetrating these new markets, and therefore the group’s income decreased from N$129 million to N$31 million.

“It is not easy to roll out Trust-

co’s innovative financial prod-ucts in unsophisticated markets in the rest of Africa, but we will continue to expose the people to these products and services. We have to keep in mind that the cake in Namibia is small, but the one in Africa is much big-ger, and with persistence Trustco will succeed. It is only a matter of time,” said Van Rooyen.

At the same time, Van Rooyen pointed out that Trustco is one of a handful of Namibian com-panies with an external growth strategy in place.

“The external profits are to promote local wealth creation. Thus the money is coming back to Namibian shareholders, and not is not taken out of the coun-try, as is the case with many oth-er companies.”
