Potential for Wind EnergyOff Grid wind power has many limitations, and many plusses...

Ireland is famous for wind coming off the North Atlantic...

Clews Bay is a protected area of lesser islands, so perfect...

Inishraher is a scaled project appropriate for phasing in...

Wind is just one component for a complete off-grid system...

A smart grid is sustainable, self-reliant, systems oriented...

Wind + Turbine = Energy (maybe...)

Assess the power required

Size and spec the right turbine

Determine effective wind speed

Piece together system components

Budgeted cost analysis for Phase 1 wind

Phase 1 SummarySpreadsheet analysis for use of electrical requirements for 1 new residential building and existing Farmhouse; 25 people full time use

Best case scenario for Off-Grid Solar PV and Wind power generation, backed up by propane generator

Wind generation is limited to 7kW by off-grid system and PV by poor solar

Use of propane is already there to service heat, cooking and hot water so backup by propane will be enhanced by extra wind production

Cost analysis for the entire Phase 1 system comes in at $152,000; that is almost $100,000 less than running a cable from the mainland for $250,000, plus the ongoing cost of electric bill and possible outages

Phase 2 ProjectionThe 2nd large residence and a smaller building will add 25 more people, doubling the electrical need; a repeat of the first system will be added after evaluating and adjusting for productivity

Solar thermal hot water system using high efficiency vacuum tube panels will be used to heat water and a possible heating system

Propane use will come down by this, but a generator will remain as permanent back-up system incase of emergency or down-time.
