Principal’s Report

Welcome back QBC students, families and staff to the final term of the

year! This week we farewelled our Year 12 students as they graduated from

secondary school. It was a special time as we celebrated their years at QBC.

We wish them all the very best for the future. Thank you to the amazing staff

who decorated the venue so spectacularly; to the newly appointed prefects

for 2020 who served on the night; and to the wonderful team of Year 11

parents who prepared delicious refreshments on the evening.

The Year 10 students are looking forward to their Formal Dinner at AQWA

tonight. This is a special evening for the young people to enjoy friendship out-

of-school, ‘glam up’ and have some fun. Have an awesome night Year 10s!

Congratulations to the Year 11 students who are taking on the role of prefects

in 2020. Last Friday night, they got to experience (and enjoy) an

evening of team-building aboard the Leeuwin II sailing ship in

Fremantle. As the students commence their leadership role within

the school, we pray for all of God’s blessings for the

year ahead.

Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)But those who hope in the Lord

will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary,

they will walk and not be faint.

Quinns Baptist College

One personal goal I have in life is to show love to others as Jesus showed love . I certainly

don’t get it right all the time, which may be a result of my cultural upbringing, the hectic

pace and pressures of life or just by being human and experiencing emotions that, at

times, get the better of me. Yet, when I reflect on those times, I am challenged to change my

actions and/or responses in the future. And I ask myself, ‘How would Jesus show love in this

scenario?’

This is the guide that the Bible gives us for showing love to others:

‘Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not

dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth . It always protects, always trusts, always

hopes, always perseveres’ (1 Corinthians 13 : 4-7).

I would hope that as a school community, we can actively work towards showing this kind of love

and respect to each other—no matter what our differences are. Sadly, though, it is all too often

the opposite in a school environment, and these negative experiences can have significant,

lasting ramifications for many of us later in life.

I encourage you to reflect on the verse above and explore an area in your life that you could

actively work on to show this kind of love and, then, see the positive effect it has both on yourself

and on others . Your life will be richer as a result!

The class of 2019 hit The Open Road

The last lesson of the day is usually met with gratitude by students and teachers alike. The last lesson of one’s school life calls for something a little more special.

On Thursday 17 October, the second last English lesson, ever, my year 12 English class and I walked down to Gumblossom Park, sat under a tree and I read to them extracts from Walt Whitman’s great poem, Song of The Open Road. It is a poem as much about endings as it is about beginnings. It is a poem best read outdoors where one gets a sense of breathing in ‘great draughts of space’ and where the heart of Walt Whitman resides. Farewell class of 2019. Journey on with equal measure of care and abandon.

From this hour I ordain myself loos’d of limits and imaginary lines, Going where I list, my own master total and absolute, Listening to others, considering well what they say, Pausing, searching, receiving, contemplating, Gently, but with undeniable will, divesting myself of the holds that would hold me. I inhale great draughts of space, The east and the west are mine, and the north and the south are mine.

I am larger, better than I thought, I did not know I held so much goodness. From Song of The Open Road by Walt Whitman

QBCSportsFest 2019

Sportsfest 2019. A weekend for Students 16 years and over. Most students start looking forward to this weekend

when they are in Year 8. It consists of 3 days of fun and games, ranging from Uno, Scrabble, Fishing, Bubble

Soccer, Netball, to Touch Rugby, Hockey, Tennis and more. Morning, noon and night, the students enjoy meeting (and

competing against) over a thousand other young adults, as well as making new friends within the QBC team. With little

sleep at night and very active days, the weekend winds up on Monday morning with the much looked forward to Tug-

of-War finale. This year QBC walked away with a few trophies, new friendships and memories that will bring

a smile in years to come. We look forward to seeing you all again at Sportsfest 2020 and would like to thank

our Co-ordinator: Megan Quick for all her organisation and preparation and also Ed Devine, Mr Davis, Ms

Lane, Miss Cutler, Mrs Tran, Mr and Mrs Quick and Mr and Mrs Norman for volunteering to help

over the weekend.

On 25 September, the Year 11s met at school to travel on the school buses to Barrack Street Jetty for

the annual river cruise . With great excitement, they boarded the Crystal Swan cruise boat and were

amazed at the interior reception area and dance floor downstairs. After feasting on a variety of foods,

the dancing got started. To break the evening up, each student was awarded a personalised certificate from

their peers: Who will . . . be the next prime minister, be the first millionaire, start a charity, invent time travel,

become a doctor, fly an aeroplane, or leave the country and change their identity, etc..

Delicious desserts were served and the dancing continued until we had to disembark and return home. A big

thank you to all the students who organised the awards and to Mr Bower for being our compere and bus driver,

as well as Mrs Van Der Merwe and Mr Joubert for driving the other buses, and all the other staff who shared a

memorable evening with our Year 11s.

Community & Compassion Bali Compassion Trip

This year’s Bali Tour was one of our best, with the team often going over and above to raise funds, work hard at the

Children’s Home and come home with a desire to continue to help.

We were able to take over much needed funds to help with ongoing running costs of food, education and housing. We were able to put our backs behind some shovels and move some dirt for a new project (Mr Percival was the hero here creating a slide for dirt to roll down out of old tin sheets!) We created some beautiful relationships, which will be ongoing. We practiced Bahasa Indonesia and the Balinese students practiced their English. We played together, did homework together, and danced together.

If you want to have your eyes opened to something different and if you are okay with moving out of your comfort zone a little, start thinking about next year’s tour. It will be amazing!

The prefects for 2020 have been elected and have already ‘embarked’ on their first excursion together aboard the Leeuwin II in the Port of Fremantle last Friday, 25 October. The first order of business was getting familiar with the ship’s rigging and sails, and testing their fear of heights!

The evening program involved specific ship duties throughout a night-watch rotation, and also simulations and discussions concerning their leadership roles for 2020. The next morning, the prefects scrubbed the deck, polished the brass, and assisted with a food delivery in preparation for a 3 day voyage.

Mrs Lane and I were impressed by how quickly the team came together and by the group’s diversity, which represents a wide circle of interests among the Year 12s of 2020. The team also impressed with their declaration of support for each other and their desire to unite the College.

We look forward to their contribution in 2020!Andrew Bowness

QBCStudent Accomplishments

Congratulations to Declan Searson who has been awarded

the WA Naval Association Cadet of the Year. Declan will

spend a week on the Leeuwin, which counts towards his

WACE. He will also receive a mentorship from the Naval

Association that will provide him with any help he may need

to gain entry into the Navy.

Congratulations to the QBC Media Club students:

Jade Stirling, Mia Simatovic, Jordan Phillips,

Thomas Hindle, Trent Saunders (featured in photo),

Danielle Janse van Rensburg, Robert Muir, Dylan Venter,

Charlotte Wotton and Jordan Mostert (absent), for being

awarded the 2019 Runners Up in the Film category at the

YOH Fest Grand Finals on Saturday. Their film "Tribe"

is a moving and thought provoking piece that portrays

the human need of belonging, the need to find our own

tribe. It was a wonderful night showcasing drama and

film from students across the state and we are so proud

of the hardwork and talent of the QBC Media students.

During the holidays, Robert Cook had an experience of a life

time heading over east to Coffs Harbour to represent Perth Glory

Academy in the Football Federation Association (FFA) National Youth

Championships.

The College would like to congratulate Robert for his ongoing

achievements on the Soccer pitch.

Digital Technology excursions

On Tuesday 24 September, the Year 9 students visited ECU to enhance their current

programming knowledge. The students had fun building on their skills by creating their own

Rock-Paper-Scissor game for Micro:Bit computers, and then playing their games against

each other. They also learned how the Radio Communication and Ultra Sonic Ranger of the

Mico:Bits work. At the end of the day, they got the opportunity to create their own innovative

creations using the Micro:Bit computers. The day ended with a campus tour to see the

computer labs of the Computer Science students and where Engineering and Nursing is.

On Friday 25 October, the Year 10 students also went to an excursion to ECU to learn more

about cyber security. They were able to investigate how safe their passwords actually are and

got an insight into the world of CCTV cameras, and Digital Forensics. The highlight for most

of the students was the exposure to cyber challenges, and finding encrypted messages in

different documents. Students were exposed to Capture the Flag (CTF) activities and informed

of opportunities to join CTF competitions, which enhance cyber skills.

We would like to thank Dr Michelle Ellis of ECU for organising lectures for the different

sessions and for giving QBC students the opportunity to gain an insight into the world of

digital technology they may enter into after Year 12.
