On a recent trip back to Massachusetts from Chicago, Quinsigamond Community College had 4 faculty members who were returning from a training and had the pleasure of sitting behind Senator Warren on their flight. Near the end of the

flight they had a very pleasant conversation with her and Senator Warren noted she has been the commencement speaker at 13 of the 15 community college commencement ceremonies. We have not been lucky enough to have her speak at one of

our commencements yet, so we would be honored if Senator Warren would consider speaking at our next Commencement. Our ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 18, 2018 at 1:00pm at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA.

Our new President, Dr. Luis Pedraja would be honored to have Senator Warren be a part of his first Commencement.

Senator Elizabeth Warren Quinsigamond Community College Commencement Address

President Pedraja, faculty, alumni, friends, family and graduates. I’m honored to be here with you today at Quinsigamond Community College home of the beloved Wyverns! Thank you President Pedraja for inviting me to address this year’s ceremony. This is President Pedraja’s first commencement here at Quinsig -- congratulations on a job well done. I know what you’re thinking---if Elizabeth is here today with us, how will she ever make it over to Windsor Castle in time for the Royal wedding? It’s okay—there’s a Southwest flight that leave in 2 hours. 17 stops but it’s cheap. To the graduates of the Class of 2018 you did it. Classes are over, papers are finished – or not –exams are done, you’ve made it to the finish line. Congratulations! I think it’s safe to say that none of you would be here today without the love and support you received from your family, friends and loved ones. They stood by your side through thick and thin. The late nights, early mornings, the endless cash app transfers—all of it. So, let’s take a moment to say thank you.

And we certainly cannot forget the faculty and staff who helped get you across the finish line. Let’s hear it for all the educators here at Quinsig! I went to a commuter school a lot like this one, so I know that you’re leaving campus with a quality education that will help you take the world by storm. Here’s to Quinsigamond! But I suspect I’ve been invited today to make sure that you leave with one more small addition to that quality education, so here’s my offering. Later today when you’re celebrating with family and friends, they will give you all kinds of career advice. Here’s one thing to add to the list – a piece of advice that, down the line, may save your life, your career or even your marriage—so listen up. Delete every college photo you’ve ever taken. I’m serious. No matter how well behaved you’ve been, nothing good can ever come of them, trust me. And here’s another piece of advice: save embarrassing photos you’ve taken of other people. You never know when they may be running against you for the Senate – it could make the difference. OK, seriously, I do have one piece of advice I want to share with you as you move into the next chapter of your life: democracy depends on you.

Now I know that sounds like something you’d hear on a cable news panel just before you drift off to sleep, but I’m serious. At this moment in history, our democracy is in crisis. And it’s up to us to save it. Our democracy was founded on the ideals of liberty, equality and justice for all. And a host of laws, rules, standards and traditions have made America the land of opportunity. I know the value of that opportunity first hand. When I graduated from a commuter college like this one, I didn’t say to myself “United States Senate, here I come”. My principal feeling at the time was celebration. I didn’t have another 40 years to go to hit my dream. I had already arrived—and it had been a hard road to get there. From the time I was in second grade, I wanted to be a teacher. [Can we hear it for any teachers in the group? Teachers rock!] But for me to be a teacher, I needed to go to college, and my family had no money for college. Besides, my mother didn’t think I should go to college—I was supposed find a husband and raise some kids. I had a different plan. I was a high school debater, got a full scholarship to college, so off I went.

When I turned 19 the first boy I ever dated parachuted back into my life and asked me to marry him. So, what did I do? The most logical and sensible thing – I said yes—gave up my scholarship, dropped out of school and marched down the aisle. That was the 1968 version of swiping right. I dropped out of college, but I hadn’t given up the dream of becoming a teacher. And a commuter college –one that cost $50 a semester – was my second chance. Yeah, take a deep breath and think about that price tag: $50. I found a school I could pay for on a part-time waitressing job, and I held on for dear life. I eventually scraped together enough credits to graduate. The process wasn’t easy, it was full of ups and downs and sideways slides, but because this was my chance to do something I was deeply passionate about. You might say, I persisted. My story has a lot more twists and turns: Moving. Babies. Law School. Divorce. Remarriage. A ten-year-long fight—1995-2005—against credit card companies that tricked people. A fight to build a consumer financial protection bureau to protect American families and stick it to the banks. And then, the first woman elected from Massachusetts to serve in the U.S. Senate.

It’s been an amazing journey, but it all started with my chance to earn the diploma that you are about to pick up. I got my $50 second chance at a commuter college because I grew up in a time when America invested a lot more in its kids. America—our government, our democracy—made in a priority to invest in kids who are trying to get an education. I’m deeply grateful for that opportunity. I believe that one part of democracy should be about helping people get a chance to build something valuable. I’m deeply frustrated that our government—not just this administration, but our government over the past 40 years—has shifted more and more of the cost of an education over to the students. And I have to be honest with you, it happens because in Washington and in state houses across the country, money talks, and the voices of students are not as loud as the voices of CEOs and billionaires. Our democracy is under siege. Right now, the integrity of our democratic institutions is being eroded at a break neck pace. Our regulatory agencies have been hijacked by giant corporations. The free and open press endures daily attacks. The rule of law is questioned from the highest office in the land.

I’ll give you just one example that is especially relevant today: The Department of Education, the Department that is supposed to look out for students, the Department that hires the companies that administer your student loans, has been loaded up with lobbyists and executives who make their money shilling for the phony schools and high-profit student loan companies. The Department of Education is helping make investors rich—while you, the students, will pay and pay and pay. This is wrong, and it would not be happening if democracy were actually serving the people, and not just the rich and powerful. OK, that’s heavy, heavy for a graduation speech and really heavy for a group that was up partying late, late last night. Yes, it’s heavy, but hear this: I’m hopeful. I’m hopeful because of you. Yes, money talks, but only so long as millions of Americans remain silent. When we use our voices together, we are louder—and more powerful—than any force in this country. And that’s why I’m hopeful: Even as the rich and powerful tighten their hold on our democratic institutions – democracy is changing. And you are helping lead the change.

In the last year, I’ve had 27 town halls across the Commonwealth and the number one question I’ve gotten is: how can I get involved? How can I make my voice heard? In the fights over health care and immigration and net neutrality—and yes, student loans, how can I make this democracy represent me? How can I make this government deliver on the promise of America? Democracy is changing. It’s not the democracy of big money. It’s not the democracy of party bosses. This democracy is powered by the people. This democracy is led by women wearing pussy hats and carrying hand-made signs who organized the largest march in the history of the world. This democracy is led by the people who flooded every airport terminal across this country and said, “America cannot—and will not—ban Muslims.”

This democracy is led by the scientists who marched in their lab coats, the scientists who are working with real urgency to use science to save us from climate change and global destruction. This democracy is led by people with disabilities who stormed the halls of Congress during the health care debates to put a human face on Medicaid. This democracy is led by Dreamers who are as American as you and me and deserve a chance to dream. This democracy is led by 15 year-olds and 16 year-olds who’ve said “enough is enough. Kids are dying in schools, on their way to school, in their homes and on their front steps.” And this democracy is led by you, Class of 2018. This democracy depends on you. Make no mistake – we’re a diverse nation. Just look around you. The stories and backgrounds of the people at this ceremony are as diverse as they come. But even with all of our differences, there is so much we have in common. So much we have to figure out together. So much that we can’t manage alone.

Rising health care costs, climate change, the cost of college, reforming our criminal justice system – all of these issues affect our future. And here’s the truth – every single step we take further into cynicism – retreating into our corners, digging in with suspicion and resentment – is another step away from solving the problems that are threatening to destroy our democracy. Whether Quinsig is the first stop on your journey – or the beginning of your second chance - jump into the fight to save our democracy. We need your voices. We need your perspectives. We need your experience. Democracy depends on you. So get in the fight, Class of 2018. If you don’t know how to start I’ll give you three suggestions:

First, join a group. Groups make us stronger and help us organize.

Second, don’t just talk with people who agree with you. Talk to that cranky uncle of yours or the new office mate who’s obsessed with conspiracy theories. Yes, the two of you may disagree, but talk—and, more importantly, listen. That’s how we’ll begin building solutions.

Third, show up. Protest. Rally. Organize. Stand with those who share your values. Stand—and fight alongside them.

Use your voice, use your energy, use your determination – use whatever you have to move this country forward. America gave me a chance, and I’m grateful down to my toes. I ran for the Senate because I want the next Quinsig kid to have that same chance. To grow up in an America full of possibilities. That is the true promise of our democracy. It’s a promise worth fighting for. And I’m in this fight with you all the way. So here’s to the Class of 2018! You are the future of America. I’m honored to fight alongside you. Let’s make change. Thank you!

Senator Elizabeth Warren to speak at Quinsigamond Community College

Commencement WORCESTER, MA—April 4, 2018—U.S. Senior Senator Elizabeth Warren will give the keynote address at Quinsigamond Community College’s 53rd Commencement. Senator Warren has made it her life’s work to fight for middle class families and has made higher education reform one of her top priorities. As one of the most visible figures in national politics today, Senator Warren has been relentless in working to be the voice of the people. She is recognized as one of the nation's top experts on bankruptcy and the financial pressures facing middle class families. Senator Warren has served as Chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), and through her direct initiatives, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was created. Senator Warren was also instrumental in introducing the Accreditation Reform and Enhanced Accountability Act of 2016 (AREAA). The legislation is designed to take steps to reduce student debt and protect students and taxpayers by reforming higher education accreditation and strengthening the Education Department's (ED) ability to hold accreditors accountable. The Senator has also proposed a bill with Senator Bernie Sanders, The College for All Act, which would enable students to attend most public universities for free. Senator Warren has received many accolades over the years including being named one of the Most Influential Lawyers of the Decade by National Law Journal; honored by the Massachusetts Women's Bar Association with the Lelia J. Robinson Award and was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world three times by TIME Magazine. “Senator Warren has a clear vision of the roles that community colleges play in the economic prosperity of our students and our communities, said QCC President Dr. Luis G. Pedraja. “She will serve as a strong foundation for our ceremony. We are sure her words will inspire and motivate our graduates to continue achieving great heights as they leave QCC and fulfill their dreams.” The college’s Commencement will take place on May 18, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in the DCU Center in Worcester.
