Roadmapping for Strategic Managementof Intellectual Property (IP)

Intangible assets such as IP havenow been attributed to somewherein excess of 75 percent of the valueof publicly traded companies.

Therefore, people could expect IPstrategy to be a top priority forsenior management. However, IPremains a poorly managed asset.

AimsOne of the reason for the problem is themisalignment between IP and overallbusiness strategy. This project aims todeliver a management tool for facilitatingIP management.

While quantitative tools are beingdeveloped rapidly, the qualitative toolremains rare for IP management. In thisproject, we propose using roadmapping asa suitable tool for aligning IP with strategyto maximise business value.

Progress1. The framework and process model

were developed based on literaturereview, archival analysis, andexploratory interviews.

2. The refinement is being carried out byinterviewing with IP consultants, roadmapping experts, and companies’executives and IP managers.

3. Further refinement will require in-company case studies.

DeliverablesThe project delivers a conceptualframework and a process model. Thesteps have also been described in details.
