Welcome It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you to the International Conference on Ground Improvement and Ground Control: Transport Infrastructure Development and Natural Hazards Mitigation (ICGI 2012). The Conference
is hosted by the Centre for Geomechanics and Railway Engineering and the SMART Infrastructure Facility at the University of Wollongong. It is co-hosted by the Australian Geomechanics Society, ISSMGE, International Geosynthetics Society and SEAGS. The conference sponsors are Menard-Bachy, Coffey Geotechnics, Douglas Partners, GHD, Keller, Maccaferri, Infratech, Geo-Con and Cofra.
In Australia, the recent infrastructure boom has reflected the need for extensive ground improvement as large construction projects must encompass soft and weak ground in all States including compressible soft clays, highly erodible silts, weak landslide debris, weakly cemented sands, and highly fractured and weathered rock mass. In this context, the launching of the ICGI 2012 Conference in Wollongong, Australia has been most appropriate and timely. The idea of hosting this follow up event in the scenic city of Wollongong was born partly due to the successful International Symposium on Ground Improvement Technologies and Case Histories held in Singapore in 2009 and the contributions to ground improvement that the University of Wollongong has made over a long period.
The Conference will be held in the McKinnon Building at the University of Wollongong, during 31 October - 2 November 2012. The Conference will aim at promoting ground improvement concepts and applications predominantly in the fields of transport infrastructure and natural hazards mitigation. This Conference will act as a platform to disseminate the most recent research and field advances to the geotechnical community around the globe. Outstanding Keynote lectures, State of Art presentations, Heritage lectures and numerous technical discussions will contribute three days of scientific and technical discourse, followed by attractive excursions encompassing the natural landscape of the south coast of New South Wales.

Conference InformationVENUEThe Conference will be held in Building 67 (McKinnon Building) at the University of Wollongong, Northfields Avenue, Wollongong. The three Auditoriums are located on the First Floor of Building 67. Please refer to the campus map for the location of Building 67. A speaker preparation room is located on the Second Floor of Building 67.

WELCOME RECEPTIONThe Welcome Reception will be held in the Exhibition Hall of Building 67 at the University of Wollongong from 6:00pm - 8:00pm on Tuesday 30 October. Canapés and beverages will be served during this time.
CONFERENCE BANQUETThe Conference Banquet will be held in the Ballroom of the Novotel Northbeach Wollongong hotel, located at 2-14 Cliff Road, Wollongong. The banquet will commence with canapés and beverages at 7:00pm, followed by a 3-course dinner and beverages from 7:30pm - 11:00pm. There will be various forms of entertainment, together with the Best Paper Awards Presentation.
For delegates who have registered to attend the banquet, your name badge will include a banquet ticket. The ticket must be presented to gain entry to the banquet.
Complimentary buses will be provided at 11:00pm to drop delegates at various accommodation venues around the city, including Boat Harbour, Flinders, Medina, Chifley and Best Western City Sands.
CONFERENCE OPENING AND KEYNOTE LECTURESThe first session of the conference will commence at 8:30am on Wednesday 31 October in the Main Auditorium (Room 67.107) in Building 67. The registration desk will be open from 7:30am.
CONFERENCE CLOSINGThe conference will close at 12:30pm on Friday 2 November, followed by lunch until 1:00pm.
SESSION ROOMSRooms 67.107 (Main Auditorium), 67.104 (Auditorium I) and 67.102 (Auditorium II) are located on the First Floor of Building 67.
REFRESHMENTSMorning and afternoon refreshments and lunches are included in the conference registration fee. Tea and coffee will be served on arrival each morning from 8:00 - 8:30am. Refreshments and lunch are served in the Exhibition Hall of Building 67.

NAME BADGESAll delegates, including presenters, will be provided with a name badge, which must be worn at all times within the conference venue and at the Conference Banquet.
SATCHELSAll delegates will receive 2 conference satchels upon registration. Your satchels will include material submitted by the sponsors, the conference program and book of proceedings.
CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGSAll delegates will receive the proceedings in hard copy and on CD upon registration. The book and CD include all camera-ready papers submitted by oral and poster presenters. All papers were peer reviewed.

COFFEE BARIn addition to tea and coffee being served at all refreshment breaks, a mobile espresso coffee bar is available outside Building 67 from 10:30am - 3:30pm on Wednesday 31 October and Thursday 1 November. Please be in your session room 10 minutes early to assist all sessions to run on time. Your chair will brief you about the format of your session before the commencement of presentations.
Please ensure you bring a hard copy of your presentation notes or handouts with you as there are no printing facilities available.
A student volunteer will be located in each session room should you require any assistance.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR POSTER PRESENTERSPosters will be displayed throughout the conference in the Exhibition Hall in Building 67. Please present your poster to the Registration Desk during the Welcome Reception on Tuesday 30 October or in the morning of Wednesday 31 October. At least one of the poster authors is expected to be present adjacent to their posters to answer questions during the refreshment breaks.
Posters should be no larger than A1 size (841mm high x 594mm wide) portrait and poster presenters must provide their own Velcro ‘hooks’ to display the posters.
Please collect your poster from the Help Desk during the morning refreshment break on Friday 2 November.

Getting around WollongongFREE SHUTTLE BUSWollongong’s FREE Gong Shuttle buses (Route 55A/55C) make it easy to travel to the University of Wollongong from the City Centre, Wollongong Central Railway Station and numerous accommodation venues. The service operates between 7:00am and 10:00pm from Monday to Friday and runs every 10 minutes during peak times (7:00am - 9:00am & 3:00pm - 6:00pm) and every 20 minutes off-peak.
