IPSERAPresident:commentonConferenceinHungaryandtheAGMAs the new president of IPSERA first of all, I would like to express my sincere thanks to (inalphabetical order) Anita Kőhegyi, Attila Chikán, Dirk-Jan Kamann, Gyöngyi Vörösmarty, KrisztinaDemeter and Zoltán Kovács who have made IPSERA 2017 in Hungary such an excellent andmemorable conference. In particular the location at Lake Balaton was very special and theparticipantswillsurelyrememberthatinfuture. Ofcourse, it isnotonly the locationbutalso theconferenceprogramwhichonceagainhasbeensuchasuccess–asitwouldnotbefairtotheabundanceofveryinterestingitemsontheagendatopickuponany individualaspects, Iamnotevengoingtotrytodothat.ManythanksagaintothelocalhostsattheuniversitiesofBudapestandVezprem. IfeelveryprivilegedtobethenewIPSERApresidentandIwillhopefullybeabletocontinueHelenWalker'ssuccessfulworkinthisrole.TogetherwithDonnaMarshallasvicepresidentandtheotherExecutiveCommitteemembers–at thispointaverywarmwelcometoournewmembersWendyTateandAntonellaMoretto–Ihavealreadystartedtodevelopsomenewideasforthenexttwelvemonthsandbeyondandwehavediscussedthefollowingtopicsinsomedepth–forexample:

withexpertsattheconferenceandbeyond. ThesetopicsaretoformthebasisforourparticipatoryworkintheExecutiveCommitteebutalsoforourworkasacommunity.Therefore,IwouldliketoinviteallmembersofIPSERAtotakepart inadiscussion about that and thus to make a contribution to an active network, both during theconferenceandbeyond. InmynewroleasPresident, Iamdefinitely lookingforwardtogivingsomethingbacktoIPSERAofwhatIhaverepeatedlybeenabletobenefitfromoverthelastdecade. Withbestwishes,Michael MichaelHenke,IPSERAPresident

FromtheIPSERA2017conferencehostsMorethan200participantsenjoyedthecombinationoftwoworldsatthe2017IPSERAConference:first,thedazzlingcityofBudapestwiththeatres,alternativepubsandafabuloushistoricconferencevenue along the Danube. Then, the relaxed atmosphere of a beautiful Lake Balaton and greathospitality in another historic building in the nicest location of Balatonfüred. With a Saturdayeveningget-togetherinthetrendyPudercafé-restaurantinBudapest,theSunday-attheCorvinusUniversitymainbuilding-wasfilledwithaverysuccessfulDoctoralWorkshoporganisedandchairedby Davide Luzzini and the Educators Conference with exciting presentations, organised by SteveKelly. Lutz Kaufmann started off these two pre-conference eventswith the first key note speech.After that, presentations were discussed, even during the well-served coffee and tea breaks.GyöngyiVörösmartydidawonderful job inorganising thisBudapestpart and for the first time inIpsera’shistory,wewereabletocontractafulleco-biocateringcompanylookingafteraverynicelunchandcoffeebreaks.Apartfromtheeco-foodanddrinks,itwasarrangedthatleft-oversofthebuffetwiththeverynicefoodwouldbebroughttocentresforhomelesspeople,toavoidaneedlesswasteoffood.At the endof the Sunday, participantswere transportedfreeofchargetotheconferencevenueinBalatonfüred,atrip of about 95 minutes. There, they were welcomedwith an extensive buffet in the romantic settings of theAnna Grand Hotel, where since 1825 the annual AnnaGrand Ball for debutants takes place. The hotel, itsgardens, the direct surroundings with quiet walks alongthe lake, togetherwith the very goodweather, it was adreamthatcamethrough.Andthatdoesnotevenincludeyet the great service provided by the hotel staff. Ofcourse, the Pannon crew consisting of Tünde Vajda andherteamof10veryeffectiveandcharmingstudentsandGabor Kohlrusz taking away any IT worries and problems made things go smooth, includingarrangingforspecialtaxiservices,aspouse-partnerprogramandtracinglostjackets.

As to the program: after the welcoming byIPSERA Vice-President Michael Henke, localconferencechairDirk-JanKamannintroducedthethemeoftheconference:Copingwiththefuture: Picking your battles.After this, GyulaVastagoftheSzéchenyiUniversity(Győr)andthe School of Public Administration,NationalUniversity of Public Service (Budapest)presented the very interesting key notepresentation, after which the sessionsstarted. There were 25 Competitive Papers,91WorkingPapers and9PractitionerPapersin the program, together with a number ofPersonal Development Workshops on thefollowing topics: (1)WritingScientificarticles(run by JPSM and JSCM, by their respective

editors),(2)SupplyChainFinanceCommunitywithaworkshopsessionandaspecialManagementGame ‘the Cool Connection’, (3) Necessary Condition Analysis by Jan Dul and Zsofia Tóth, (4)MethodsandOR,byArisSyntetos.Finally,twoSpecial InterestGroupshadacomplete90minutessession each: the Internet of Things, organised by Michael Henke, and Innovation, organised byThomasJohnsen,Anne-MarieLeDainandRichardCalvi.

OnMonday,afterafulldayfilledwithpresentations,discussionsandworkshops,participantscouldwatchHEMOdanceWinnersDoraandAdamVajdaandfriendsgivingasparkling,whirlingshowofvariousdances in theBallRoombeforeenjoyinganexcellentbuffetwithqualityHungarianwines.Whilemost people retired to their room at 23h, some went for a walk or some verymotivatedparticipantsevenforaswim.

OnTuesday,attheAGM,MichaelHenketookoverasPresidentand theusual reportswerepresented by members of the ExecutiveCommittee. Antonella Moretto(PolitecnicoMilano) was elected as new member of theCommittee and it looks like IPSERA has asound financial position and is a vibrantcommunity with bursaries to supportparticipants requiring support, an increasednumberofPhDstudentswithareducedfee,anew IPSERA Veterans League (IV-league) forretired academics, with reduced fees and anenergetic Executive Committee full of ideas.The lively discussion at the well-attended

AGMreflectedthecommitmentofthemembershiptotheAssociation.TheConferenceGalaDinner in the famousAnnaGrandBallroomwasanotherexampleofthegoodatmosphere of the conference. Apart from theexcellent foodat theserved5coursedinnerandthe good wines served next to draft beer andjuices,themusicplayedbythelocalmostpopularband Búgócsiga (meaning ‘Spinning Top’)encouraged everyone to take the dance floor,some45peopleevenuntil03.00haftermidnight.Of course, there were speeches: by IPSERAPresidentMichaelHenke to thank theorganisingteam of Dirk-Jan Kamann (Pannon), GyöngyiVörösmarty (Corvinus), Krisztina Demeter(Corvinus), Zoltán Kovács (Pannon), Attila Chikán (HALPIM), Anita Köhegyi (HALPIM), the twoPannonstaffmembersTündeandGaboralreadymentionedearlierandHalpimstaffmemberAnitaBenesch.Dirk-Jan, inhis turn, thankedhis teamandof coursewasgrateful tohispartnerPirosB.Hegedüswho–apart forbeing the reason forhimtocometoHungary4yearsago–wasagreathelp in selecting suppliers and doing the negotiations. And, in addition, he praised the strategicsupport received and the excellent cooperation provided by Anna Grand Marketing ManagerKrisztinaNagyandBanquetManagerDávidDobó. Arecentemail fromAustralia informedusthatthe hotel even sent a jacket thatwas left behind at the hotel to the owner, without any chargeinvolved.Thatiswhatonecallsservice!ChapeauforAnnaGrandHotelanditsstaff!

Furthermore, (4) theConference Reviewer award winnerKai Förstl (GGS) and in addition (5)Niels Uenk, the IPSERA Treasurer,received the same gift – an original‘collage’ – for his excellent work astreasurer in support of theconference, resulting in the firstIPSERAConference everwhere all participants hadpaid before the conference started. Finally (6)TündeVajda,HeadMarketingandInternationalRelationsofPannonreceivedthespecialIPSERAGiftforhergreatsupportinorganisingtheconference.TheJPSMEditorsLouiseKnightandWendyTatepresented the JPSMBestPaperAward toBrucePinnington, JoanneMeehanandTomScanlon fortheircontributiontitledAgroundedtheoryofvaluedissonanceinstrategicrelationships.AttheendoftheGaladinner,PannonDeanoftheFacultyofBusinessandEconomicsZoltánKovácspraised the conference as a great event andwas happy that Pannon could have played a role inmakingitasuccess.Asasurprise,hepresentedtheIPSERASpecialGiftalsotothechairmanofthecommittee.Wednesdaymorningstartedslowlyaspredictablebutstillhadsomeexcellentpapersfortheabout140 participant still active. At 12 o’clock, participants, having been providedwith a healthy lunchbag,boardedthebuses,bringingthembacktoeitherBudapestortotheairport.Itwastheendofavery pleasant, stimulating conference, with excellent papers, good discussions and the usualstimulatingIPSERAspiritpresentatalltimes.As to the Sustainability aspect: catering on Sunday was all-eco in Budapest and in Balatonfüred,focuswas on healthy food and no plasticwater bottles butwater coolers and special Dopper re-usableBPA-freebottlesprovidedtotheparticipants.Productswereallregional,includingthewinesand beer. EducatorsconferenceThe 2017 IPSERA Educators' Conference (EC) brought together purchasing and supply educatorsfromaroundtheworldtolookathowwecan:“copewiththefuture:pickingyourbattles”througheducation.Theconferencestartedwithanenlightening jointkeynoteaddress forboth theECandDoctoralWorkshopfromTobiasSchoenherr(fromtheEliBroadCollegeofBusiness,MichiganStateUniversity)onhowdatacollectionviapaid research firmscanbeused in researchandeducation.Thiswasfollowedbyawiderangeofexcellentpaperpresentations,coveringanumberofdifferenteducationalareasandprovidedtheparticipantswith ideasandpracticaltechniquestouse intheirownteaching.Theafternoonsawatopicalworkshop,organisedbyLouiseKnight(AstonUniversity),whichdiscussed the role of values, politics andexpertise in the classroom. Theday closedwith asession on how interactive books can be integrated intomodule delivery, before the bus trip toBalatonfuredfortheremainderoftheconference.The organiserswould like to extend their thanks to Tobias Schoenherr for delivering the keynoteaddress, those who presented papers and delivered the workshop, all participants and all thoseinvolved from Corvinus University for making the Educator’s Conference such a worthwhile andinterestingday.We are starting preparations for next year’s Educators' Conference, which will be organised byStephenKelly (EdgeHillUniversityBusinessSchool)andMarikaTuomela-Pyykkonen (UniversityofOulu, Oulu Business School) and will be developing the theme and suggested agenda over thecomingmonths.As theEducator’sConference is forus, asaneducationcommunity,wewelcomeanysuggestionsorcomments,whichcanbee-mailedtoStephenatstephen.kelly@edgehill.ac.ukorMarikaatmarika.tuomela-pyykkonen@oulu.fi

DoctoralWorkshopThe 2017 IPSERA Doctoral Workshop (Sunday, April 9th) kept PhD candidates and discussantsengagedalldaylonginameaningfullearningexperience,startingwithTobiasSchoenherr’skeynotejointwiththeEducators’Conference.ThisformatconfirmstobesuccessfulasPhDcandidatesandfacultycouldbreaktheice,startnetworking,andparticipateinalivelydialogue.TheinteractionwentonduringthedaywheneachPhDcandidatewaspairedwithtwodiscussants(one faculty and one peer). The 12 presenting PhDs, the 12 discussants and the audience allcontributed to maintain high quality standards without losing the friendly and constructiveatmosphere typicalof the IPSERADoctoralWorkshop.ThetopicsaddressedshowedhowthePSMdisciplineisevolvingandinconstantdialoguewithotherstreamssuchassustainability,innovation,performancemeasurement,andleadership.The organizer would like to thank Tobias Schoenherr for accepting the invitation and feeding aninspiringdebatebetweenPhDcandidatesandEducators.Special thankstoall thepresentingPhDsand the faculty discussants, who contributed to renew the unique IPSERA spirit right at theconferencestart.TheexpectationshavebeenmetthisyeartooandnewrecruitsjoinedtheIPSERAcommunity.SuchagreatresultwouldhavebeenimpossibletoachievewithouttheprecioussupportoftheConferenceorganizersandtheCorvinusUniversityteam.ThepersonalfeedbackscollectedduringthedayshowedtheimportanceoftheDoctoralWorkshopas a gateway to plan the PhD thesis and step-up in the career development. EntertheSCFThesisAwardstobeinvitedtopresentyourthesisinAmsterdamandwinupto€1,500plusentrytotheSCFEuropeForumplusAwardCeremony.

For the second year in a row, the Supply Chain Finance Community is organizing the global SCF ThesisAward for the best thesis related to Supply Chain Finance (SCF). Students writing their Bachelor's orMaster'sthesisonatopicrelatedtoSCFcansendintheirthesistotheinternationaljuryofexpertsinthefield to compete for one of the three prestigious awards. The best five candidates get nominated andinvitedtopresenttheirworkinAmsterdamonTuesday,November28th,2017andreceivecompensationfor their trip.
