Unfortunately most people talk themselves out of a job rather than
talk themselves into it.
Present a positive image
Make first impressions work for you.
Body Language – Non verbal body language

1. Understand yourself and review your accomplishments
So that when the occasion presents itself you can illustrate your areas of strength with specific examples.
Be prepared to give further descriptions of additional examples beyond the points made in your CV

2. When you confirm your appointment
know how long you will be there
who you will be meeting
what is expected of you
any tests will be given
… Any other info

3. Be polite and personable to everyone you encounter.
People hire people they like and whom their staff like
– and a less qualified person may get a position over one more qualified who does not seem to care about people or would not fit into the team

4. Be careful to avoid showing signs of nervousness
Such as scratching, drumming of fingers, etc.
Relax!
Interviews are never fatal and can be satisfying if you relax

5. Dress appropriately
Neatly and conservatively
Attend to all elements of personal grooming

6. Plan to be slightly early
but not too early
so you will be relaxed and unflustered

7. When you are with the person you came to see let them take
control of the interview.
Let the interviewer indicate to you where you should sit
avoid leaving anything placed on his/her desk.
Ask for an exchange of business cards if possible
(in order to obtain correct spelling, title and telephone number for follow-up calls and letters.)

8. Try to read the interviewer and get on the same wavelength.
If they want details, provide them.
If the person is interested in ideas or concepts, focus accordingly

9. Concentrate on your value.
Your experiences
results
ability to overcome problems
indicators of your worth

10. Demonstrate genuine enthusiasm
Show interest
confidence

11. Never talk to an interviewer about personal problems
Your personal problems will weaken your case
lynn@assessment4potential.com | 01444 484747 | 07801 689801 | www.assessment4potential.com
12. Modesty in an interview is a weakness.
You should not boast but need not be apologetic
If you don't tell the interviewer how will they know
lynn@assessment4potential.com | 01444 484747 | 07801 689801 | www.assessment4potential.com
13. Avoid premature salary discussions
Do not talk about money until your value has been built and understood.
Do not seem primarily concerned with salary and benefits; talk about how the content of the job appeals to you.
Salary and benefits can be negotiated at an appropriate time
lynn@assessment4potential.com | 01444 484747 | 07801 689801 | www.assessment4potential.com
14. Be an interested listener and observer.
What you say and ask will be relevant and meaningful to the interviewer.
Watch for signs of confusion on the one hand or agreement and interest on the other to react accordingly.
lynn@assessment4potential.com | 01444 484747 | 07801 689801 | www.assessment4potential.com
15. Concentrate on the idea of making a contribution in a team
environment.
Competence alone does not sell
You must be seen as a person who will be productive in a compatible way
lynn@assessment4potential.com | 01444 484747 | 07801 689801 | www.assessment4potential.com
16. Maintain a pace
Build interest towards your objective
If conversation falters ask good questions to go further into areas in which the interviewer has shown interest.
lynn@assessment4potential.com | 01444 484747 | 07801 689801 | www.assessment4potential.com
17. Always protect the confidence of a past employer
Be understanding of any difficulties the employer may have had including those that may have caused you to leave
You may be talking to your future employer, so demonstrate how much respect you will show him should any problems arise
lynn@assessment4potential.com | 01444 484747 | 07801 689801 | www.assessment4potential.com
And finally additional tipsAbove all, be yourself and not what you think
someone else expects.
Maintain your dignity and self-respect.
You have to live with the consequences so you should use the interview to ensure that you are hiring yourself the right employer.
If you want the job you will be nervous - that is only natural.
Good preparation will make positive use of your adrenaline.

As John F Kennedy could have said;
“Ask not what your company can do for you but
what you can do for the company”.
Good Luck!
