What we need to find out from the candidate during their interview:

To find this out we will ask the following open questions during the interview: (Your group will need to finish writing these questions.)

i) Has the candidate found out about the company?

Lesson Introduction (5 minutes)Explainthatiftheirapplicationisshort-listedforstagetwoofthe‘What’sYourGoal?competition,theywillneedtoprepareathree-minutevideoansweringasetofquestionslikeinaninterview.

Askthestudentswhathappensinajobinterview?

Interviewcandidatesareaskedquestionssothepotentialemployercanfindoutwhotheythinkismostappropriateforthejobvacancy.Allcandidatesareaskedthesamesetofquestionssotheprocessisasfairaspossibleforeachpersonandsotheemployercancompareeachcandidate.Aninterviewisatwowayprocessasit’salsoanopportunityfortheintervieweetoasktheirpotentialemployerquestions.

Sointhissessiontheyaregoingtolearnabouttheinterviewprocessandrole-playaninterviewscenarioforoneofthetraineerolesonofferinthecompetition.Beforetheycandothistheyaregoingtolearnwhatpreparationboththepotentialemployerandthecandidateneedtodobeforetheinterviewday.

Explainthatintheirgroupstheyneedto:• decidewhichtraineeroletheywillwriteinterviewquestionsfor;• findandreadthroughthejobdescription;• writetheremaininginterviewquestions.Remindthemthattheyareaskingquestionsfora‘trainee’notanexperiencedprofessional.

Feedback:Askstudentstofeedbackusefulquestionstheyhavewritten.Iftheyhaven’tcomeupwithany,getthestudentstoaddastheirlastquestion‘Arethereanyquestionsyouwouldliketoask?’asthisisnearlyalwaysaskedinaninterview.

Activity TwoPreparation for Interview – The Interviewee / Candidate (10 mins)Explainhowimportantitisfortheintervieweetoprepareforaninterviewthoroughlyandthatitisnaturaltofeelalittlenervousbeforeaninterview.Beforehandtheyneedtothinkcarefullyaboutthequestionstheymightbeaskedandhowtheywouldanswerthem.Italsohelpsiftheyhavealreadythoughtaboutpersonalexperiencestheycouldusetoanswerdifferentquestions.

Explainthatinthiscasetheywillknowtheinterviewquestionsinadvancesotheycanthinkabouthowtheywouldanswerthem,butthiswouldnothappenwitharealinterview.

Activity FourConstructive Feedback from an Interview (10 mins)Explainthatallintervieweesareentitledtoconstructivefeedbackwhetherornottheyareofferedthepost.Thiscomprisesofpositivefeedbackofthingsthecandidatedidwellandhowtheirskills/experiencemeetthejobcriteria(e.g.howtheycameacross,contentofanswers,etc)andsomethingthatcandidatecouldworkonorchangeinordertoimprovetheirperformanceattheirnextinterview.Ifthecandidateisnotsuccessful,theinterviewermayhighlighthowthecandidatedidnotfulfilthejobcriteria.

Intheirgroups,askstudentstodiscusstherole-playinterviewanddecidewhattheirconstructivefeedbackwouldbe.Theyneedtodecideonthreepositivecommentsandonethingthatcouldbeimproved.Thisistobedonebyallthreestudentsnotjustthoseinthe‘employer’roles.Inthisinstance,theycouldalsoconsiderappropriateconstructivefeedbackforthetwointerviewers.

Plenary (5 – 10 minutes)Dotheythinktheirgroup’scandidatewouldhavebeenofferedthejobandwhy?Explainthatinworldofwork,theinterviewerswouldhaveameetingtodiscussallthecandidatesandcomparetheirresponsestoeachquestionbeforeadecisionismade.
