Introduction to Mock ICANN Meeting

ABOUT US

NetMission.Asia is an Ambassadors Program supported by DotAsia Organisation, which aims to bring together a network of dedicated young volunteers to get devoted to promoting digital inclusion, Internet governance as well as a respectable and harmonious Internet environment.

Mission of the Mock ICANN

• To raise the awareness of Internet Governance issues among young people

• To provide a platform for younger generation to speak up on Internet Governance issues

• To build up sense of digital citizenship of young people

• To provide a simulation experience on participating in ICANN meetings

• To familiarize participants with the multi-stakeholder decision-making process

Discussion Topics

For five days, we have designed different activities to help the fellows understand and build capacity to the topics that are going to be discussed during the mock.

The discussion will be focused towards

1. On mitigating domain name abuse2. gTLDs and inequality

Background information / guiding questions and references can be found in the Info kit (provided to you)

Division of the participants

Participants will be divided into 3 groups

• Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC)(Representatives of USA, EU, China etc.)• Generic Names Supporting Organisation (GNSO)(Godaddy, Verisign etc.)• At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC)(Internet Users, Internet Society, Engineers etc.)

(Each participant will rotate to and represent different stakeholder group within the pre-mock workshops (1 & 2) and the Mock ICANN conference.)

Topic 1: On Mitigating Domain name Abuse

-Domain name abuse vs website content abuse

-Define and differentiate the differences between these two.

-Discuss current practices and challenges for mitigating domain name abuse

-Make policy recommendations

Topic 2 : gTLDs and Inequality

- Is auction a fair way to settle on gTLDs?

- What mechanisms should be formulated to give equal priority to all each applicants? (i.emore initiatives like Applicant support program)
