There are many classes of antibiotics; four are listed as major groups: lactams ( includes the penicillins); tetracyclines (tetracycline); macrolides (erythromycin) and peptides (gramacidin). For the purposes of this course, we will be primarily concerned with macrolide antibiotics and highly-oxygenated compounds.
