AT A GLANCERadio systems for wireless transmission are becoming increas-

ingly popular in industrial and home automation applications.

These primarily narrowband telemetry systems are utilized for

transmitting sensor data and control information across simple

network infrastructures. In the Internet of Things (IoT) era,

networked intelligent objects, people and things are the driving

force behind business and Industry 4.0 innovations.

Fraunhofer IIS created a technology platform designed for

robust, narrowband radio communication over long ranges that

is making an important contribution to the realization of IoT

applications. The solution relies on an asymmetric transmission

method, simple and low-cost sensor nodes and a complex

receiver connected within a star topology.
