N-TOU and F-TOU Development Plan

PLATO TOU Team meetingCatania, 28 Feb – 01 Mar 2011

PLATO TOUs 2Catania, 01 Mar 2011

TOU organization of theImplementation Phase

Preparatory Activity during the Definition Phase

A number of studies have been committed by the TOU team to a number of European industries: to assess procurement issues, to assess manufacturing, assembly and

testing procedures, to highlight critical aspects, planning

constraints and costs. The industries consulted are among those

having potentiality to serve as prime contractors and/or sub-contractors.

Catania, 01 Mar 2011 PLATO TOUs 3

Identification of procurement plan for lenses

Selex Galileo (both spherical and aspherical lenses) Industrial plan for the procurement of material

and manufacturing of 34 set of lenses. The study will include an analysis on the

sharing of risks and responsibilities for the eventual involvement of subcontractors for providing part of the components (e.g., sharing the number or the type of optical components among different subcontractors).

Delivery of the study is planned for April 2011.

Catania, 01 Mar 2011 PLATO TOUs 4

Identification of procurement plan for lenses

Seso (spherical lenses) An industrial contract has been given to SESO

to produce a set of 6 lenses for the TOU Breadboard (TOU-BB), whose assembly is planned in the framework of the demonstration activities performed by the PMC Payload team.

The procurement and manufacturing experience will allow to highlight critical aspects if any ifor the analogous activity to be performed during the implementation phase.

Delivery is planned for end Mar 2011.

Catania, 01 Mar 2011 PLATO TOUs 5

Identification of procurement plan for lenses

Medialario/SAGEM-REOSC (aspherical lenses) Industrial plan for the procurement of material

and manufacturing of 34 set of lenses. Identification of critical items, risk identification

and mitigation plan. The activity will be performed jointly between

MLT and REOSC (SAGEM) with the aim to provide a wider coverage of the technology options for polishing of this glass.

Delivery of the study is planned for May 2011.

Catania, 01 Mar 2011 PLATO TOUs 6

Identification of procurement plan for lenses

Swiss industry (aspherical lenses) The University of Bern has issued a Statement

of Work with the subject “Assessment of the procurement of aspheric lenses”.

Goal: Assessment of production chain, schedule, risks, costs

Additional (small) contract to investigate lens mounts options.

The University of Bern has received one offer from RSSZ. Kick-off meeting in CW 7. The final report of this study is due on April 29, 2011.

Catania, 01 Mar 2011 PLATO TOUs 7

Identification of procurement plan for the mechanical structure

Swiss industry The University of Bern has issued a

Statement of Work with the subject “Assessment of the procurement of AlBeMet structures”.

The University of Bern has received several offers from Swiss industry, and has selected the offer from APCO.

Goal: Assessment of production chain, schedule, risks, costs

Kick-off meeting on CW 7. The final report of this study is due on April 29, 2011.

Catania, 01 Mar 2011 PLATO TOUs 8

Identification of N-TOU AIV industrial plan

Selex Galileo Study on the PLATO Telescope Optical Units AIV

industrial procedures. The deliverable is the description of the AIV procedures, addressing the portability of the adopted procedures in the industrial contest, including risk assessment, development plan, and cost.

Delivery of the study is planned for April 2011.

Catania, 01 Mar 2011 PLATO TOUs 9

Identification of F-TOU AIV industrial plan

Lenses and structure for both TOU types are mostly identical. Only difference is the coating of the window in F-TOU. Therefore, baseline integration procedure will be based on the AIV procedure of the N-TOUs,

Based on the outcome of the AIV assessment for the N-TOUs, which is performed in Italy, the required infrastructure and procedures will be developed, procured and implemented at University of Bern.

Currently, no prominent industrial involvement other than the delivery of components is considered. The University of Bern has experience with the AIV of optical instruments. The required facilities are partly available, but need to be adopted and extended for the F-TOUs.

Question from the System Team

Is the equipment production during implementation phase under industrial responsibility?

If the responsibility is under “industry”: If the laboratory was in charge of the

design during the definition phase: Had some industry been associated to the

definition in view of taking over the responsibility during the implementation phase?

▪ If YES we have to exhibit a list of the industrial contractors involved and we shall describe what were the tasks it have taken over during the definition.

How is organized, at which date, the responsibility transfer to industry? What is the list of potential contractors, the contractual approach (ITT, AO …)?

N-TOU

Question from the System Team

Is the equipment production during implementation phase under industrial responsibility?

If the responsibility is NOT under “industrial responsibility” (i.e., it is under laboratory responsibility), we have to: describe how the design has been validated and secured during

the definition phase, precise what will be the organization permitting to insure the

equipment production (with or without industrial support) during the implementation phase,

precise what will be the organization permitting to realize the integration and tests tasks (with or without industrial support),

detail on which elements we can rely to consolidate the planning.
