At Leonardo‘s time, no knowledge about the flow around the flying animals existed. Air is invisible. He observed the currents of water.

Flying inevitably depends on the formation of vortices. Current aeronautical research concentrates on minimising their energy and on techniques effecting a premature decay.Movie: Modern transport aircraft in a slingshot tunnel.

Where do lift and drag come from? – Woher kommen Auftrieb und Widerstand?
Change in pressure causes lift – Änderung im Druck ergibt Auftrieb
a) Lift – (dynamischer) Auftrieb
Constant volume flow Q. The angle of incidence >0 (right) causes a higher massflow on the upper side, hence a higher velocity than on the lower side. The higher velocity causes a lower pressure (Bernoulli‘s equation!).Konstanter Volumenstrom Q. Der Anstellwinkel >0 (rechts) verursacht einen höheren Massenstrom auf der Oberseite, folglich auch eine höhere Geschwindigkeit. Die höhere Geschwindigkeit ergibt einen geringeren Druck (Bernoullische Gleichung!).

Where do lift and drag come from? – Woher kommen Auftrieb und Widerstand?
Sources of Drag – Quellen des Widerstands
b) Drag – Widerstand Source 1: FrictionQuelle 1: Reibung
Air is a viscous fluid. The flow particles have the tendency to stick to the surface of the moving body. Passing the fluid the body continuously encounters new particles which will be accelerated.

Vortices and lifting surfaces – Wirbel und tragende Flächen
Sources of Drag – Quellen des Widerstands
b) Drag – Widerstand Source 2: Tip vorticesQuelle 2: Die Randwirbel
The low pressure field on the upper side attracts the particles passing the tip region at the lower side. The particles start curling up and are moved downstream at the same time. The combination of the two effects results in a strong tip vortex at both sides of an aeroplane. The continuously accelerated particles coming in require energy which comes from the thrust of the engines.

The dream of flying - Der Traum vom Fliegen

Jahrhunderts entstanden.
Leonardo da Vinci did thorough studies on flapping flight. His blueprints were built and they work – principally. Our present knowledge of lift and drag describing the flow around lifting surfaces was developed at the beginning of the 20th century.
