Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, The end of Semester 1 is fast approaching with the Year 11 and 12 students beginning examinations today and most other year levels having assessment during the next week. Examinations create stress and pressure, and it is important that we all ‘read the signs’ and support the students through this time. If parents are concerned I encourage you to touch base with your son’s teachers or House Dean. Assessment Calendars, including the examination timetable may be found via the Parent Lounge on the College website. Recently a number of Year 11 Students have nominated to participate in the various immersion and exchange programs offered at St Patrick’s College. My thanks go to the staff and parents who have assisted with this selection process. The following students have been selected to participate in 2010. Congratulations to each of these students! East Timor (July) USA (September) Canada (September) India (November) Peter Rigney Christopher Harris Conor McSween Jackson DaForno Jordan Sheterline Kirt Myers Thymon Venter Blake Henley Gerard McCabe Aaron Hogg Aaron Loader Jack Nolan Jock Power Nicholas Siliato Joseph Shearman Last week the CIC Cross Country Team performed very well and was placed 7th overall. This is a very good result. The Under 12 team won their age group competing against 14 CIC schools. This is the first time a St Patrick’s College team has achieved first place. Congratulations to all runners and their coaches! Similarly, congratulations to the Open Hockey Team that defeated Padua last week (4-2) and to the Theatresports Team who have now reached the Semi-finals. Well done, all! Last week the Courier Mail published extensive data regarding the OP results for 2009. The report contained a significant amount of information. It is important to acknowledge that this data is only one part of what a school does in terms of the holistic education of its students. The data cannot simply be taken in total isolation but does provide information regarding the academic progress of the school. In 2009 the St Patrick’s College Year 12 OP results were very good. (I have reported this previously.) In fact 85% of the Year 12 students gained an OP of 1-15. Based on this information, St Patrick’s College is in the top 10 all boys schools in Queensland and the top 10 Catholic schools (male and female) in Queensland. Whilst this data is only one aspect of what was achieved in 2009, it is very good, and is testament to the quality of teaching and learning, the efforts of the students and the support of the parents. Well done, St Patrick’s College! On Friday, 18 June, the students will be dismissed from school at 1.30pm. There will be an End of Semester Liturgy which will begin at 12.45pm. Parents are very welcome to attend this liturgy. I also remind all families that all AIC Rugby and Football fixtures continue on Saturday, 19 June. All students are expected to honour their commitments here. Please do not start holidays early. Finally this week I remind all members of the St Patrick’s College community that Back to Shorncliffe Day is on this Saturday. St Patrick’s College teams play St Edmund’s and Nudgee Junior (both EREA schools) and I encourage everyone to come down, support the St Patrick’s College teams, and have a great day. Let’s make Curlew Park a sea of Green and Gold. Have a great week. God Bless Dr Michael Carroll College Principal

Using Technology Sensibly Recently a number of media networks have challenged families to go without technology. Reflecting on my own circumstances, it is hard to remember a time without seeing cords dangling from ears, eyes gazing at screens or thumbs quivering. Technology is both a boon and a curse to parents. Its use has been widely researched and found to have both positive and negative effects on children’s behaviour, language and attitudes. It is widely criticised not only for being used as a baby-sitter, but also for keeping children away from more active or educational activities (especially with examinations looming). Technology does have its good points. It is entertaining, relaxing and offers programs high in educational content. Technology itself is not the problem, rather the way that it is used. The key is to be selective in the programs that children watch/use. IDEAS (for taming technology)
Place reasonable, sensible limits on technology use. A weekly maximum of 10-12 hours viewing/gaming is highly
recommended. Restrict your own viewing/gaming as well.
Keep the technology OFF, especially during meal times. Only turn it ON when someone has decided to watch/play a program, and then switch it off when the program has finished.
Have a technology-free day once a week and try alternate forms of entertainment such as games, reading and so on.
Teach children the rating system and use it as a viewing guide. Know what children are watching so that you can make an informed decision about the suitability of programs.
Sit with children and discuss what they have seen, including the commercials. Talk about controversial or topical issues that may be presented.
CSIRO’s Visit to St Patrick’s On the Monday, 31 May, Eleanor, a representative of the CSIRO’s Forces and
Energies in Motion, came to St Patrick’s, to show all of Year 6 Science in action. First of all we were shown a demonstration of how friction creates heat. She had two steel balls, and then asked a student to hold a piece of paper. She clanged the two steel balls together, leaving a small hole in the paper where the two balls collided, creating enough heat to leave a small hole, yet not enough to set it alight. After the demonstrations to the class I went with my group, (Jamie, Riley) to look around at the scientific experiments. Our favourite, the balancing balls activity, showed how weight can be distributed, making even the weakest things strong. A board was placed over four balloons, evenly distributing the weight over the four balloons, giving it the strength to hold a person up. At the end of the day I think that everyone learnt something new about Science in a hands-on and enjoyable way. Michael Doyle (6W)
STUDENTS
Frank Torrisi Back to Shorncliffe Day: This Saturday is back to Shorncliffe Day so there will be a strong presence of Old Boys in attendance to watch the young men of St Patrick’s play in their various Football and Rugby Teams. Senior Constable Nathan Russell from the Sandgate Police Station will also be in attendance and parents will have an opportunity to speak about topics that were presented at the recent Parent Information Evening.
Drugs and Alcohol Drinking and Violence Cyber Safety Cyber Bullying Party Safe
Senior Constable Nathan Russell will be at Curlew Park from approximately 11.30am. Block Exams: All students in Years 11 and 12 receive block examination privileges. Students in these year levels only come to school when they have examinations. While at home it is important to utilise this time productively
for examination preparation. When attending school for examinations it is important to stay on the grounds of the College. IPods and mobile phones are not permitted to be used in the school grounds. If students who are staying at school to study the library will be available. Uniform: The College uniform is to be worn correctly from the time students leave home until they return home in the afternoon. This is important to maintain the positive public image of St Patrick’s College in the wider community. This includes shirts tucked in, socks pulled up and ties being worn correctly. Students in Years 10-12 must wear their blazers to and from school each day during Terms 2 and 3. All students have been made aware of the College’s expectations on this issue.
Senior Formal and Year 11 Dinner Dance: Year 11 Dinner Dance and the Year 12 Formal payments are due by Friday, 18 June.
Lost Property—there is an abundance of lost property in the Student Office from lunch boxes to uniforms and particularly shoes (black leather and sporting). At the end of this term we will be doing our usual donation to St Vincent de Paul of any lost property which has not been claimed before then. Please come in and check it out. Last Day Term 2: All students in Years 5-10 will be dismissed from the College on 18 June at 1.30pm. Buses have been organized to depart the College at 1.30pm. All students must remain at school until this time.

Year 5 “Time of My Life” By Connor, James, Jackson, Bailey and Kieran
The mathematics investigation was based on the “Time of My Life”. We had to find out how many leap years we had lived through; how many times our hearts beat a day; how many blinks we blink a day; how many days we have lived; how many
summers; how many meals we have eaten; how many breaths we have to take a day and how many school days we’ve had. We had to multiply by our age or by minutes to get the correct answer. We then had to compare our answers with a classmate’s. We had to write five reasons our answers were different and how we worked them out. It was a unique challenge but once we
had finished, it felt like a piece of cake. ART CLUB IS CANCELLED THIS FRIDAY 11 JUNE. IT WILL BE BACK ON NEXT WEEK. PLEASE SEE MISS SPENCER IF YOU WANT TO WORK ON YOUR ARTWORK BEFORE THEN.

I’ve found two more great books – 1000 Names for Joy and Loving What Is both by Byron Katie. In a very similar story to that of Eckhart Tolle, Byron Katie suffered years of severe depression, self-loathing and thoughts of suicide, before experiencing a sudden “awakening” in which she realised her suffering was the result of nothing other than believing her negative thoughts, and failing to accept what is. Like Tolle, Katie was suddenly overcome with an inexplicable sense of peace and joy – a feeling that has never left her since, even when she lost her sight, was diagnosed with cancer, or had a gun placed in her stomach by a mugger. She does not just accept what is, but lives in a state of constant love for what is, and says this is a state that all people can reach if we are able to question our thoughts. While accepting what is in the present moment is easier said than done, Katie offers a great method for achieving this state – four questions which she calls “the work”. I invite you to work through these four questions right now. Firstly, choose the most self-defeating thought that you regularly experience, such as “I’m too fat”, “my wife / husband doesn’t respect me enough”, “I don’t have enough money”, “my boss is an idiot”, “I’m not loveable” and so forth. Having chosen this
negative thought, ask yourself the following questions. Take some time with each; it might help to write your answers down: 1. Is it true? (yes or no) 2. Can I absolutely know that it is true? (yes or no) 3. Who am I (what happens) when I believe the thought ... 4. Who would I be without that thought? The result of this work is startlingly obvious. When you believe your negative thoughts you suffer – and without the thought you are happy. It is not your wife, your boss, your body, or your situation that causes your suffering, but your thoughts about it. There is only one logical thing to do in response to this realisation – change your thoughts. Negative thoughts have no place inside your mind – they serve no purpose. When you think a negative thought, tell it to get lost, and choose to believe the opposite. This is not a suggestion – do it now and do it forevermore. This is the final step of Byron Katie’s “Work” which she calls “the turn around”. Literally state the exact opposite of your negative thought – “my body is perfect”, “my wife does respect me enough”, “I do have enough money”, “my boss is beautiful and perfect”, “I am the most beautiful, perfect and lovable person on earth”. Your reality is what you
believe it to be, and you manifest your beliefs. Teachers such as Eckhart Tolle, Neale Donald Walshe, Dr Wayne Dyer, Jennifer Byrne, the Buddah, and of course Jesus all speak of this from a place of actualising it in their lives. The more I read these teachings the more I am convinced of their truths. For more information on Byron Katie visit www.thework.com , or for the technologically advanced, download her podcast interviews with Oprah from Oprah’s Spirit Channel on ITunes. Better World Books If you are looking for books a great place to find them is www.betterworldbooks.com. This is an organisation in the US that sells thousands of second hand books - saving them from landfill - employs disadvantaged and marginalised people, and uses its profits to fund literacy programs in developing countries. You can find almost any book second hand for $US3.98 and another $US3.98 for postage – about $A10 total. They also have a huge range of new books so check them out. God bless

QDU DEBATING Congratulations to Year 11 (1), Grade 8(2) and Year 12 (2) who have all qualified to compete in the QDU Finals rounds. Last night saw Year 11 win narrowly by one point against St Paul’s (2) in a vigorously fought battle over the right to compel priests to divulge information learned in the confessional. Year 8 won their secret topic debate against Bribie Island SHS. Next week Year 10 (1) will compete against Grace Lutheran. A win for our team will mean that they too will be eligible to com-pete in the finals round. This debate is a secret topic and is scheduled to be held at Northside Christian College at 7pm next Thursday.
AIC CHESS A lot can be learnt from Friday night’s game against Marist. The most important lesson is, never to take your mind off the game. In Chess, the lead is easily surrendered. One rushed move could end what could be a hard earned win. We knew that Ashgrove were going to be hard to beat. Marist, this year, are competing across all age groups and are fighting it out with the likes of SLC for AIC glory. The men of St Patrick’s College played well and gave it 110%. Despite this, we were unsuccessful in our attempt to take outright victory in any age group. I refuse to believe it has anything to do with ability. Our boys are extremely talented, self taught Chess players. Their understanding and knowledge of the game is very good, much better than mine when I was their age. I feel what is letting us down is our decision making, knowing which piece to move and why, as well as the ability to foresee what lies ahead. No two games of Chess are the same. With every move, a new game begins and new opportunities present themselves. Awareness is the key to becoming a Chess grand master.

P & F NEWS The P&F meeting scheduled for Wednesday 16 June has been cancelled. Our apologies for any inconvenience caused. All Entertainment Books should by now have either been paid for or returned to the College if not required. If you have not already done so, please make arrangements as soon as possible. If you have any queries, please contact Lesley Palmer on 0421 524 991. We have had a very good response so far and we appreciate your participation. The next fundraising for the P&F is an ongoing venture. Gary Greinke, the Manager of Mal Meninga’s Fruit Market at Taigum, has started a fruit/vegie home delivery service and for every $45 pack sold the P&F would receive $5. Customers would email their completed order form to the Fruit Market and arrange payment direct to the Fruit Market. The packs can be fully customised to suit your family and also include free delivery. Please see the flyer with this week’s Calling for more information. The next P&F meeting is Wednesday 21 July at 7.30pm in the Library Diane Hamill—President H: 3205 5180 (after 6pm)
