Billy Joel: The Library Of Congress Gershwin PrizeFriday, January 2 at 9pm
Billy Joel’s piano-fueled narratives take listeners into the relatable and deeply personal crevices of life, mirroring his own goal of writing songs that “meant something during the time in which I lived . . . and transcended that time.” This program includes performances by Joel, as well as Tony Bennett, Josh Groban, John Mellencamp, and more with a special performance by Kevin Spacey—as well as a dance ensemble performance from Twyla Tharp’s Movin’ Out.
Ripley: Believe It Or NotAmerican ExperienceTuesday, January 6 at 9pm
LeRoy Robert Ripley rose to fame during the Great Depression, transforming himself from a skinny, bucktoothed boy into an entertainer who mesmerized the nation with his razzle-dazzle blend of homespun Americana, colorful exotica and freakish oddities. At the center of it all was Ripley, whose obsession with the odd and keen eye for the curious made him one of the richest men in the country.

The Met’s New Merry WidowSaturday, January 17 at 1pm
Renée Fleming stars as Hanna, the beguiling Parisian millionairess, who captivates all Paris in Franz Lehár’s enchanting operetta. Sir Andrew Davis conducts a cast that includes Nathan Gunn as Hanna’s lover, Danilo; and soprano Kelli O’Hara, star of the Broadway musical The Bridges of Madison County.
The operetta will be performed in English, in a translation by Jeremy Sams. Director Susan Stroman, whose many credits include the Tony Award-winning musical The Producers, created the lavish new production. Lehár’s best-known work has been an international audience favorite since its 1905 premiere and features a great deal of well-known music, including “Vilja,” “You’ll Find Me at Maxim’s,” and “The Merry Widow Waltz.”
HarmoniaThursday, January 8 at 9pm
We devote this hour to the life and accomplishments of early music luminary Christopher Hogwood. We look back on his days with David Munrow and the Early Music Consort of London; we hear from Hogwood as a solo harpsichordist; and we sample from the more than 200 recordings he made with the Academy of Ancient Music. Plus, a featured release from Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society, an organization for which Hogwood was conductor laureate.
Christopher Hogwood.

Masterpiece is the jewel in the crown of American television brought to life through sumptuous scripts, costumes, and sets. Now in its 44th season, Masterpiece debuted in 1971 with The First Churchills and has become a treasured American institution.
To help ensure that the celebrated Masterpiece will warm the homes of millions for another four decades, producing station WGBH created the Masterpiece Trust. The Trust is an innovative collaborative that provides individual philanthropists who are passionate about the series with an opportunity to help ensure its future while also supporting their local public television station.
• Launched in January 2011, the purpose of the Trust is to identify sources of private support to supplement core PBS funding to the series, so that Masterpiece can continue to grow and innovate.• The Trust offers philanthropists and fans the opportunity to have national impact while also supporting WTIU.• Donors wishing recognition on national Masterpiece broadcasts will be thanked with on-air credits commensurate with their level of support.• The minimum level for on-screen recognition is $25,000; for recognition on Downton Abbey, the minimum is a two-year commitment or a one-time gift of $50,000. At the $100,000 gift level and above, the donor becomes a member of the Masterpiece Guild with special benefits, events, and invitations.
For additional information about the Masterpiece Trust, please contact Nancy Krueger at nkrueger@indiana.edu or (812) 855-2935.

MASTERPIECE CLASSIC Downton Abbey, Season 5Sundays at 9 to 10pm, January 4 to March 1
Downton Abbey returns for an epic fifth season of interlaced stories centered on an English country estate. Season 5 of the international hit finds the Crawley family and the staff struggling with responsibilities and choices as they adjust to life in the Roaring Twenties. The ensemble cast includes Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern, and Hugh Bonneville.
The ensemble is joined this season by guest stars Harriet Walter (Atonement), reprising her role as Lady Shackleton, and Peter Egan (Death at a Funeral), who returns as Lord Flintshire, with new characters played by Richard E. Grant (Girls), Anna Chancellor (The Hour), and Rade Sherbedgia (24).
In Episode 1 (January 4), a working-class prime minister is elected and old attitudes start to change. Robert is snubbed by the
village. Baxter tells all, and Edith plays with fire. Episode 2 (January 11) finds Rose hitting on a strategy to get a radio in the house. Sarah tutors Daisy, an art historian arrives, and Anna makes a difficult purchase.
In Episode 3 (January 18), Mary and Lord Gillingham put their love to the test as Bates faces a trial. Cora makes a new friend while Violet is reunited with an old one. Episode 4 (January 25) finds Lord Merton delivering a bombshell to Isobel, and Mary doing likewise to Tony. Police suspicions deepen in an unexplained death. Robert and Sarah lock horns.
