Astro and Quiz

Two words that define JISHNUHere’s a tribute to the legend

Q1 According to the Pythagorean school of thought(Fig. 1), X was essential to maintain balance in the Universe, and prevent the Universe from being flung apart.

Later, when the Heliosentriv theory got widely accepted, yet another version of X became popular, and was expected to exist like Fig.2

Identify X

Q2

• Where can you find a messages from U.S. President Jimmy Carter, the U.N. Secretary General Kurt Waldheim, Beethoven, Mozart and several other people?

• Along with messages from the other people, you may also find some food, architecture, and signals of a woman in love.

Q3 Id X• X is a hypothetical red dwarf star or brown dwarf, originally

postulated in 1984 to be orbiting the Sun at a distance of about 95,000 AU (1.5 light-years), somewhat beyond the Oort cloud, to explain a perceived cycle of mass extinctions in the geological record, which seem to occur more often at intervals of 26 million years.

• Muller, referring to the date of a recent extinction at 11 million years before the present day, posits that X has a semi-major axis of about 1.5 light-years (95,000 AU) and suggests it is located (supported by Yarris, 1987) near Hydra, based on a orbit derived from original apogees of a number of atypical long-period comets that describe an orbital arc meeting the specifications of Muller's hypothesis. In 2002, Muller speculated that X was perturbed 400 million years ago by a passing star from a circular orbit into an orbit with an eccentricity of 0.7.

Q4• Earth• Mercury• Venus• Mars• Saturn• Moon• Neptune• Jupiter• Uranus

• Exactly one object is not in it’s correct position in the list. Which object is it, and what decides the positions of objects in this list?

Q5• One of the legends associated with X is that a X’ stopped

on his way to fetch water for Apollo, in order to eat figs. Instead of telling the truth to Apollo, he lied and said that a snake, kept him from the water, while holding a snake in his talons as proof. Apollo saw this to be a lie, however, and flung the X’, Y, and the snake into the sky. He further punished X by making sure that it would forever be thirsty, both in real life and in the heavens, where the Y is barely out of reach.

• Id the constellation X, it’s related real world object X’, and the constellation Y

Q6

The mirror shown on the right is clearly not a normal mirror for a telescope. As can be seen by the reflection of the man, the mirror is planar. Where/How is this going to be used?

Q7 Id the event

Q8 Id the event

This one’s a bit harder… So the date of this doodle is July 29th, 2008

Q9

Identify the mysterious green object in the image to the left.

Q10• In 2001, Karl Glazebrook and Ivan Baldry determined

______________, but they soon corrected their analysis in a 2002 paper. The survey included more than 200,000 entities. The technical code for X is #FFF8E7. The finding of the ___________ was not the focus of the study, which was examining spectral analysis of different galaxies to study star formation. What the study revealed is that the overwhelming majority of stars formed about 5 billion years ago. Glazebrook's and Baldry's work was funded by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. X was displayed in a Washington Post article. The name X was decided while Peter Drum was sitting at Y.

• ID X and Y.
