John Brooks Slaughter was the � rst African American to direct the National Science Foundation. A distinguished electrical engineer who is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, he has led two major universities and has a lifelong personal passion for increasing education diversity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Now he joins the University of Southern California with dual appointments in the Rossier School of Education and the Viterbi School of Engineering.
