The Lovely and Joyful Countryside of the Siraya National Scenic Area If you have an opportunity to experience a trip in the Siraya National Scenic Area,
you will discover how the people live in the countryside and
the certain rustic charms of their lifestyle.
Introduction
3
The Siraya National Scenic Area is situated in southern Taiwan, covering 16 rural
districts on Tainan City’s east side and the Zhongpu Township and Dapu Township
in Chiayi County. It covers about 95,000 hectares of land. The Siraya NSA is a major
farm production area, best known for natural mountains and streams, cultural and
scenic reservoir areas, ecological resources, farms, agriculture produce and related
recreation. In recent years, under governmental direction, the agricultural products of
all counties and towns have been integrated, promoting special local products in each
area. In order to promote significant tourism resources for the area, during the last two
years, I have visited 16 rural districts several times. Some of the features of the Siraya
NSA which I have to mention include the “Fire King Ritual,” “The Butterfly Park,”
“The sunrise over Er-Liao,” “Souvenirs,” and “Dongshan Coffee,” just to name a few.
I also have to appreciatively mention all those local farmers, business partners, and
administrative staff, who have been making such huge efforts to better promote all
that the Siraya National Scenic Area has to offer.I personally hope this area becomes
a recreational paradise and will offer those who are busy with their jobs an opportunity
to reduce the stress of their occupations and will offer to those of the elderly a
wonderful opportunity to experience a healthy lifestyle.
The main purpose and focus of this book is to draw out the joyous and
therapeutic aspects which open, spacious, clean-air filled areas can provide for all who
venture into them and enjoy all that they have to offer. It is hoped that, through this
book, readers can be drawn with interest and enthusiasm to countryside tourism and
recreation. It is divided into four units, with parts on the reservoir scenic area, culture,
ecological resources, and the agricultural production industry.

Dating with SirayaDiscover a wonderland in Siraya
In olden times people used to have more leisure time than today. Nowadays, modern
technology makes our lives more convenient, yet somehow more hectic, so people learn to
cherish and appreciate the memory of, and the charm of the rustic way of life. There is less noise
and pollution. It is pleasant to live with the green mountains and the grand plains. With this
generation it seems that everyone has a smart phone, tablet or some sort of interactive game in
their hands. They really need to learn to be in contact with nature and experience the simple
and unadorned lifestyle in the countryside. So why not decide to make a trip to the Siraya
National Scenic Area. It is really worth it!
About SirayaThe Siraya people are an indigenous people that once occupied the plains in the Tainan
area. When Han Chinese people immigrated to the area, the Siraya people were gradually
pushed out and were forced to move. Many traditional customs were lost by this way, with
only a few ceremonies and religious customs surviving to today. Indeed the Siraya culture that
survives shows just how determined the aboriginal people have been to hand this culture down
from generation to generation and how proud they are of it.
On November 26, 2005, a new national scenic area, the Siraya National Scenic Area was
established in southern Taiwan. It was an important moment designed to preserve the most
precious traditional culture, “Siraya Culture,” and to help the development of tourism resources
in an area famous for its mountain-and-water scenery, its production, its historical features, and
its traditional customs.
The Beauty of Zengwen ReservoirZengwen Reservoir is the largest reservoir and the largest man-made lake in Taiwan. It
is also the largest scenic area in southern Taiwan. The beauty of the Zengwen Reservoir is the
mists and ripples of the lake. When it is still, the reflection of the mountain scenery on the lake
5
creates a most majestic and beautiful picture. Standing by the lake you get the full effect of the
clean and clear air, and you can enjoy the reflected mountain scenery as if it were a painting on
the lake, providing the complete relaxation for the visitors. The most popular activities that you
can enjoy there include nature walks, river cycling, camping, fishing or taking a cruise boat on
the river. A valued contrast to city life!
The Chianan PlainThe Chianan Plain is located in the southern part of the western coastal plain of Taiwan.
Given its varied geographic factors, a number of unique features have been developed here, such
as the color and texture of the stones, the ground, grasses and the wonderful array of butterflies.
Chianan IrrigationChianan irrigation was constructed to promote agricultural production on the Chianan
Plain of Taiwan. Work on the canal commenced in 1920 and was completed in 1930. The
Chianan Canal increased the area for planting rice, and with the rice crops growing in its
irrigated area it was possible to harvest rice three times per year. Due to the richly fertile
conditions produced by the irrigation system, farmers were able to expand and develop the use
of the area and the products they were able to grow. They now have diverse harvests and uses
for the area such as hot spring hotels, coffee shops, lotus farms, etc.
There are 16 rural districts between Tainan City and Chiayi County. Let’s discover the
beauty of the Siraya National Scenic Area and experience countryside tourism and recreation.
Touring in Siraya, you will find yourself exposed to a rejuvenating blend of colorfully artistic
land, romantic hot springs and joyful countryside.

Love Story ofWushantou Reservoir
Coral Lake
“Coral lake” has the reputation of being the most
romantic spot. Originally known as Wushantou Reservoir,
it is located on the borders of Liujia District and Guantian
District. More than 30 mountain streams converge here to
form this picturesque 30 meter-deep water land. When looking
down from the sky on this area, you would see a meandering
shoreline which has the appearance of turquoise coral reefs.
The Temple of Heaven is next to the Wushantou
Reservoir. In appearance it imitates the mainland Beijing
Tiantan construction, but in only about one sixth of the size
of Beijing’s. It is about 29 meters high. The complex was
visited by the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties for
annual ceremonies of prayer to Heaven for good harvests. It is
regarded as a Taoist temple.
The green of the island, seen as reflections on the lake,
and a massive reservoir with uncountable water ripples,
form the unforgettable and beautiful scenery of
Wushantou Reservoir.

The Year of 1930……
During the Japanese occupation era,
one of the largest armed anti-Japanese
uprisings, known as the Tapani Incident,
took place on April 9, 1915. It was organized
by Taiwanese Han and aborigines. Many
villages were destroyed and thousands of
people were killed during the following
repression.
In 1930, the Japanese technician Hatta
Yoichi finally completed his enormous
projects , and as a consequence, the
agricultural productivity of the region
was boosted by an enormous margin. The
constructed waterways channeled water to
about 150,000 hectares of farmland within
the Chianan Plains. The large fertile areas
of farmland now seen within Tainan County
are the direct results of this undertaking.

The “Wushantou Friendship Association” was
founded in 1931. It was formed with contributions
gathered from the workers that were engaged in
the construction of the Chianan Irrigation River in
order to commemorate with gratitude and respect
the young project leader, Hatta Yoichi, whose work
and commitment to the project was so vital and so
successful. A statue commemorating Hatta Yoichi
was erected adjacent to the dam. It shows him in
a very peculiar posture-sitting down, holding his
hair with his right hand set on an uplifted knee. On
the embankment above there's a memorial to the
134 workers-among them highly educated Japanese
engineers and illiterate Taiwanese laborers-who died
while working on the project.
In the year of 1942
On the 7th of December, 1941, the Japanese attacked the US naval base at Pearl Harbor which led to the
entry into the Second World War of the United States of America and the commencement of hostilities in the
Pacific. In 1944 Japan gained control of the Philippines, although it commenced its efforts to gain this control just
after Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Meanwhile, Hatta Yoichi boarded a vessel called the “Taiyo-Maru” with a
group of Japanese experts which was bound for the Philippines on an assignment to evaluate the possibility of an
irrigation project being carried out in the newly occupied territory. Unfortunately, the “Taiyo-Maru” encountered
an American submarine and it sank off the Goto Islands on 8th May 1942. Hatta Yoichi did not survive.
At the height of World War II when the States attempted to confiscate scarce metals, the statue mysteriously
vanished. It turned out that it was carefully hidden in a warehouse of the Longtian train station. After the war,
the statue was moved to Wushantou by the Chianan Irrigation Association.
After the time that Chiang Kai-Shek was in power, the statue reappeared in 1981 to the astonishment of the
general public. Ever since the restoration of the statue, memorial services have been hosted by the Association on
the 8th of May each year, commemorating the anniversary of Yoichi’s death, as well as his wife Yonemua Sotoyo.

Love Lasting Forever
In 1917, Hatta Yoichi, then 31 years old, went back to Japan to get
married. It was an arranged marriage. His wife Yonemua Sotoyo was only
16. She achieved the highest honors graduating from Kanazawa girls’
senior high school in Japan. Her father was a medical doctor in Kanazawa
city. Despite 15 years apart in age, his new wife Hatta came to live in
Taiwan among Taiwanese people. He told his friends that to live among
Taiwanese was to learn from them. In other words, he did not consider
himself above the Taiwanese like some other Japanese leaders, but rather
enjoyed their company and what they had to offer as people. Hatta and
his wife had two boys and six girls, and they lived happily together.
After Hatta Yoichi died, Yonemua Sotoyo had to raise their 8
children. Near the end of the Great East Asia War, they moved to their
former home, Wushantou. In 1945, an atomic bomb was exploded over
Hiroshima that led to Japan’s surrender and the end of World War
II. Yonemua Sotoyo loved Taiwan so much, she could not cope with
the agony of being deported, as were some 400,000 Japanese, when
Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek took over Taiwan. She became so sad
and distraught, so she threw herself into the outfall of the dam at the
age of 45. She was buried alongside her husband’s ashes in the family
graveyard constructed by the Gar-Nam Water Resource Association.
She left a posthumous paper on which was written “Love you, my
dearest husband, I want to accompany you.” This was testament to the
constancy of their love lasting forever.
Commemorating Yonemua Sotoyo The love story of Hatta Yoichi and Yonemua Sotoyo
is generally regarded as very touching and poignant. The 1st of September, 2013, was the 68th anniversary of the death of Yonemua Sotoyo and it also marked 93 years since the construction of the Chianan Irrigation project. The erection of the statue of Gaiyoju Hatta was initiated by the Cultural and Artistic Association, Japan, for memorizing Yoichi Hatta. The statue was designed using a photograph of Gaiyoju Hatta as the designed base and the statue child held by Mrs. Hatta is the fourth child born in Wushantu, Yoshiko Hatta.

Meet with Hatta Yoichi
Japanese-style dormitories were built in the
Wushantou area in 1921, consisting of houses
and condo houses. These dormitories used
traditional Japanese style architecture which
was prevalent in Taiwan around that period
of time. In keeping with this, the Hatta Yoichi
Memorial Park was established in 2009 with
four Japanese-style dormitories for recreational
purposes (Hatta's House, Akahori'sHouse, Abe's
house, Tanaka and Ichikawa's house). In order
to make sure the buildings were as authentic as
possible to the original style, the reconstruction
team traveled to Japan to visit Hatta's children
several times. The furniture in the reconstructed
buildings was donated by individual Japanese. On
May 8th, 2001, the Hatta Yoichi Memorial Park
was opened beside the waterway, introducing the
history and achievement of this very famous and
important Japanese civil engineer. 05

Hatta's House was originally built for his family. There was
a western style bedroom designed as a study. Outside the house,
there was a pool built for the personnel working on the waterworks
construction project. Hatta often gazed out at the pool while
thinking about and working on his projects.
When you step into the house, you seem to explore real
life conditions in order to find answers and harmony. Each
Japanesestyle house represents different meanings of time.
Hatta Yoichi’s love nourished the Chianan irrigation system
and the Chianan Plain. The story of the loving couple of Hatta
Yoichi and Yonemua Sotoyo has been represented on wooden
blessing plates; it has guided a love which is beyond race,
nationality and life. The stone tablets “ 絆 の 桜 ” in the Hatta
Yoichi Memorial Park are meant to highlight people and lasting
relationships. It is also hoped that the cherry blossom tree seeds
which were given by the Japanese will serve to highlight and
maintain the great relationship between Taiwan and Japan.

Romance of Moonlight on Hutoupei
Hutou Mountain was named because of its shape, the
face of a ferocious tiger. When standing on the bridge at dawn
or dusk and overlooking the center of the lake, you will see
the enchanting sight of moonlight reflecting off the lake and
shimmering with an orange-yellowish luster. Tainan City’s
Documents Committee selected “Moonlight on Hutoupei” to
be one of the “Eight Nanying Sights.”
Hutoupei Reservoir, Taiwan's oldest reservoir, was built
in 1846. If you enjoy riding your bike or roaming around the
lake,it will make your visit worthwhile and enjoyable.

Relax and wander unhurriedly around the romantic water and mountains.
Surrounded by mountains, Jianshanpi Reservoir originally
provided water for Taiwan Corporation’s Sinying Plant. But
due to a serious problem with sediments and through a change
of management considerations, it has now become a scenic
resort area. It is also named “Jianshanpi Jiangnan Resort.”
Jianshanpi Reservoir has a wonderful ecological landscape.
The environment is beautiful and secluded, with plentiful trees
and plant species. During each season, over 100 ornamental
plants and trees take turns bursting open with beautiful
flowers, giving the appearance of a miniature garden, and
offering the splendor of nature.

An old legend of “Red Garden”
The land of Dapu township was named “Red
Garden” in the Ming dynasty. It recalls a romantic
story about an aboriginal girl who fell in love with a
Han Chinese person. At the beginning of summer
each year when the level of water in the reservoir
goes down to its lowest level, the history of the “Red
Garden” site can be easily seen. Antiquarians have
studied this site very closely over the years, and its
historical memory and importance has gradually
been recalled.
Red Garden was once the home of a few
Taiwanese aboriginal Tribes (Tsou, Bunun and
Pingpu), as well as Han people and Japanese. In the
tribes, all the houses were made of wood. Because
04
06

of the flooding, they were forced to move to their
current location at the Jiadongjiao, in the Sinyin
district of Tainan. Due to the size of the restricted
land area in the new site, the distinguishing feature
of these row houses was that they were made
of bamboo in traditional Taiwanese residence
architectural style. A row house is hundreds of
meters long and is called a “Dragon.”

mountains and lakes here are stunning.
Along county road 129, drive upstream
of the Zengwen River, and then walk along
the forest nature trail. You will be able to
see Neiyechi Suspension Bridge. Standing
on the bridge, you can get a wonderful view
of the beautiful valley, take in the pellucid
stream and watch fish swimming. The first
two words of “Neiyechi”, “Neiye” sounds like
“eagle” in Taiwanese, and you will see that
the bridge is in the shape and sign of eagle’s
wings. If you are lucky, you can see eagles

Starting from Siraya Point to aPeaceful Journey in Pingpu
Awakening cultural heritage
The word “Pingpu” comes from the Chinese word pingpu, an abbreviation of “pingi caopu,” or “flatlands
and prairies.” Japanese scholars categorized the aborigines of Taiwan into two groups, the “mountain
peoples” and the “flatlands peoples.” The Siraya people are one of the Pingpu tribes that settled in Tainan.
They have had a primitive agricultural life before the arrival of massive Han Chinese immigrants. Since the
17th century, they have faced strong forces from outside. By the end of the 19th century, they had failed to
resist assimilation with the result of losing their languages and cultures.
A number of families of Xinhua District still identify themselves particularly as Siraya. A Siraya Culture
Association was established in 1999. It strives to maintain Siraya cultural heritage and attempts to promote
their culture to the world.

Belief, unique and fascinatingReligious belief in Siraya mainly focuses
on “Alitsu worship,” “public sacrifice place”
and “night sacrifice.” Alitsu is also named
“five ancestor sisters,” “Taizu,” “Alimu,”
or “Taishang-Laojyun.” The worship is the
only identifiable Sirayan cultural practice
which is still being followed. Almost all of
the residents worship the “Alitsu” ancestor.
Every household, without exception, has
a family altar where they worship Alimu.
On the first and 15th day of the month, a
person is assigned to change the water in the
ritual vessels of the public sacrifice place,
and to clean these vessels. The villagers all
prepare sacrificial products such as Taiwan
Agrimony, betel nuts and wine, which are
all used to worship Alimu at the public
sacrifice place. In addition, “wangyi” plays
an important role as a priest. Wangyi is the
spokesman for the Taizu ancestor. He is
the channel by which the people and Taizu
communicate with each other.

To hand down the connection between the past and present
There has been a rapid loss of the Pingpu culture. As a
prime example, the Fanzihtian local sacrifice place was rebuilt to
be a Han Chinese-style temple. Night sacrifice is an important
ceremony for Siraya people, which takes place in between lunar
September and October months. Each tribe holds the ceremony
at different times and it can run from evening to dawn, hosted by
a wangyi. The purpose of the ceremony is to express thanks and
gratitude to “Alitsu” and seek assurance that they will be able to
maintain the traditional culture and heritage.
Originally called “Kabuasua,” Donghe Village is located near
Dongshan District in Tainan City. The night sacrifice of the Alimu
religion that they follow is a cultural tradition that was originally
passed down by the Siaolong sub-tribe of the Siraya Pingpu people.
By 2013, night sacrifice had come to be recognized nationally by
the Ministry of Culture as an important custom.

begins around 1:00 p.m., and the villagers worship their
ancestral spirits by preparing sacrificial products.
Kabuasua, called by Siraya, is where one of the
first and most important indigenous groups. The tribe
has led a simple agricultural existence. Supplemented
by coastal fishing and hunting, they have maintained
certain ceremonies and religious customs and many
people have retained their consciousness of their
Sirayan ancestry. Today a cultural revival is underway.
If you have an opportunity, you should come here for a
visit and get to know more about the story of Siraya.

Da Sian Temple, Bi Yun Temple and Baishui Stream of Baihe District
The story was about the migration of a Buddhist statue. Canche
Zen Master, carrying a small Buddhist statue, came from Fujian
Province in China, across the sea to Taiwan and wandered around
the island. When passing by Yanjing, he put aside the Buddhist
statue and took a rest. When ready to go, he found that he could not
move the Buddhist statue and thought there must be a predestined
relationship. Hence, he decided to settle down here and built a
thatched cottage. Da Sian Temple was built here. It was formerly
called “Old Yan.”
Later on, Ying-Hsiang, the founder of the temple, who was a
pious follower of Buddhism from Fujian, China, practiced Buddhism
in Dasian Temple. He selected Da Sian for pursuing religious
practice, reading, teaching and offering sacrifice to Guanyin. To show
their appreciation, funds were raised and used as a donation for the
construction of a temple - Bi Yun Temple. It was called “New Yan.”

It is a peaceful place to relax mentally and physically, with green
hills and clear waters. In 1871, a Scottish Presbyterian missionary
came to Taiwan named William Campbell who served both
Han Chinese and Taiwanese aborigines in the area. He wrote
extensively on topics related to Taiwan and was also responsible
for founding the island's first school for the blind. At that time,
in order to defend religious faith, he suffered life-threatening
encounters and great conflicts in addition to the hard work during
the church's founding. Today there is a memorial stone standing
there for people to commemorate his contribution.01

different kinds of rocks and the biggest one weighs
around 150 tons. “Fo-Xin-Yin-Sheng-Shi” five words
were written on the rock. It means that Buddhist
meditation practices are techniques that encourage and
develop concentration, clarity, emotional positivity,
and an ability to view the true nature of things. Besides,
you can also see a Wood Jade and its night view.
Chinshan Longhu Temple, located in Liujia
District by Wushantou Reservoir, was built in 1665.
According to a legend, it was built by General Yong
Hua Chen from the Ming Dynasty. With the mountains
in the background and the water in the forefront, a
piece of flat land protrudes from the mountains, three
sides of which are surrounded by water, looking like
a miniature island. When the sun sets and the moon
rises in the east, the breeze gently blows and the moon
shines on the lake. Some lovely, exquisite scenes are

Karma Kagyu Monastery and Zuozhen Church
Karma Kagyu Monastery is a Tibetan
Buddhist temple (White Sect) located in
Tainan City. Combining both Tibetan and
Chinese Buddhism styles, it is one of a kind. In
the Buddhist Monastery, the Buddha's Pagoda
rises high above and is eye-catching to visitors
even from a very far distance. Therefore, the
neighboring mountain area is nicknamed “Pagoda
Mountain.” If you have some free time to visit
here, participating in the blessing rituals will
enhance your luck. During autumn you can smell
osmanthus fragrance, also known as “sweet olive.”
Zuozhen was the residence of Siraya;
thus, many local residents continue the Siraya
bloodline. Zuozhen Church has a history spanning
over one hundred years and a footing in primitive
tribal spiritual beliefs.
You can visit the “Luo Lai Shou Memorial
Hall,” also called “Bama Pingpu Museum” next
to Zuozhen Church. This Memorial Hall was
established to commemorate the elder Luo Lai

Roaming in Xinhua Contrasts the Baroque Architecture with the Historic Old Street
The lapse of time cannot be won again, but the historic buildings are still preserved.
Baroque-style buildings with old-style signs hanging on
many of them and copper door plates conjure many stories and
memories in Xinhua Old Street area. These remains kept since
the ancient time with their elaborate decorative touches and
several old shops from decades ago in the area, all adding to the
yesteryear charm.02

Yue-Zi ConfectionVisiting Xinhua Old Street, you have
to try the brown sugar confection called “Yue-Zi Confection.” In early time, it was referred to as the “fragrant confection with brown sugar and malt sugar inside.”
Travel Tips
Xinhua Old Street is located on Zhongzheng Road, Xinhua
District. It was a bustling commercial area and political center
during the period of the Japanese occupation. Baroque-style
buildings are spread throughout the area. There is a three-block
stretch where almost every building follows this style. The facades
are in great condition and really showcase the antiquity of the
Japanese-era modernity. However, today Xinhua Old Street retains
a modern ambiance. Both sides of the street are lined with shops
and houses, brimming with highly visible Art Deco and baroque
features. The thriving trade and coal mining business gave rise to
many trading stores on the old streets.
The long-history Xinhua District and the surrounding
area used to be the aborigines’ residence on Siraya plain, called
Tavocan. During the Jiaqing Period of the Qing Dynasty, Tavocan
was called Tavocan Zhuang. This area played its part as an
important business development center. During the Japanese
occupation period, Japanese people established the prefecture
system due to local system reform. It was later called the Xinhua
Prefecture in 1920.
After Taiwan restoration, Xinhua District was renamed
Xinhua Township. In 2010, it was called Xinhua District after the
combination of the provincial city of Tainan and Tainan County.

One Hemp Rope – Unity of Everyone’s Power to Love the Land
The Former Site of Xinhua Street Government Office was
established during the Japanese Colonial Period. The building's
facades incorporate pebbles, imitating the style of the late
Renaissance. The Former Site of Xinhua Street Government
Office is the last one left in southern Taiwan.
The Government Office was moved, and there were plans
to dismantle and rebuilt it as a parking lot. The local residents
launched a campaign to preserve the building. In 2000, more than
a thousand people used hemp ropes to move the office in order
to preserve the original facade. The temporary address is now on
Ming Sheng Road, in the plaza in front of the traditional market.
In 2002, it was moved to the original place and became a tourism
information center with a coffee shop inside. It preserves local
culture and heritages and was once voted the fourth most historic
building in Taiwan.

“The Indomitable Rose” representsYang Kui's passion for literature
Aside from the old street, you can see a building designed in
a modest classical style called the “Yang Kui Literature Memorial
Museum.”
Yang Kui was born in Xinhua and was one of Taiwan’s best
authors during the Japanese occupation period. Yang adamantly
used his writing with socialist overtones as a voice for the weak. The
Memorial Museum features Yang’s photographs, manuscripts, and
other documents, as well as a book storehouse and a reading room,
to preserve Yang’s research and literary works. The museum often
hosts various art performances to promote a local atmosphere of art
and culture.
If you visit the museum, you can see Yang’s works, pictures, and
related documents which elaborate the details of his life, his beliefs,
and accomplishments in society. The Memorial Hall allows those
who come of age in that era to once again embrace their dreams,
and it introduces young people today to the mission of literature as
well as the ideals and suffering of an earlier generation.
Ye Tao Yang Fang ResturantYe Tao Yang Fang Restaurant is next to
the National Xinhua Industrial Vocational High School. It is a story-based & garden-designed restaurant. The founder of this restaurant was very impressed by the loving couple Yang Kui and Yang’s wife, Ye Tao. Inside the restaurant you are able to see the story of Yang Kui and some literature documents. Old Tainan CanalConsigned to History, Standing Still onthe Mountain
Across a cycle of sixty years
The "Old Tainan Canal" is located in the Shanshang
district of Tainan. It was complete in October, 1922 and
was designed by a Japanese engineer. The canal was built in
order to supply water in Tainan and as a means of preventing
waterborne infectious diseases.
The source of water comes from the Zengwen Reservoir,
which has all the facilities and equipment needed to draw,
direct, treat and distribute the water. The canal has been
operating for about 60 years. Later when the Wushantou
Reservoir, Zengwen Reservoir and Tanding water purification
plant were built, the Old Tainan Canal was no longer used to
deliver water. The Old Tainan Canal then became a national
historic spot and was approved as such by the Ministry of the
Interior on the 29th of September, 2005.

Caoshan Moon World is located in the Zuozhen district.
It is a terrain of slate-grey mud-stone that consists of sandstone
and shale. It is also known as the “badlands.” Chalky soil makes
it nearly impossible for vegetation to grow here. It feels as hard
as rock when it is dry and becomes muddy after the rain. The
rain washes and cuts the surface of the terrain, leaving geological
features such as mountain sides, deep valleys and winding streams.

From ordinary to extraordinary, Cailiao Stream has the reputation of a world famous fossil area.
Fragmentary fossils of anatomically modern humans are constantly being found in Zuozhen
District, Tainan, in fossil beds exposed by the erosion of the Cailiao River.
According to scientific research, millions of years ago, the area either bordered the sea or
was in shallow waters. There are still many organic remains scattered around Zuozhen. They
primarily feature fossils discovered in Zuozhen, including the Zuozhen Man’s skull fossil, as
well as the remains of shells, alligators, sharks, coral, and mammals such as elephants, deer, and
rhinoceroses. A large number of fossils have been unearthed, providing valuable resources for
learning about the evolution of sea and land organisms, and the changes in Taiwan's geological
formation and geography. Their importance has been acknowledged both locally and overseas,
making Cailiao Stream a world famous fossil area.

Relieve summer heat with the taste of abundant, sweet and juicy mangoes.
The most loved and sought-after fruit
in the sweltering days of mid-summer in
Taiwan is the mango. When May and June
arrive, local mango varieties ripen and turn
golden yellow. It is the best time to taste the
abundance of sweet and fragrant mango ice
or mango sorbet.
Most popular areas for planting mangos
are located in the southern areas of Taiwan:
Pingtung County, Kaohsiung City and
Tainan City. Yujing is Taiwan’s biggest
producer of mangoes, boasting a range of
varieties and producing nearly 10,000 tons
of mangoes each year.
The main exporting mango is Aiwen.
Yujing and Nanhua are known as the
primary production areas for mangoes.
These last years, Japanese have been crazy
for mangoes and this trend has swept the
whole country. Take a bite of this sweet and

The Homeland of Aiwen Mango
Aiwen is Taiwan’s most popular mango; it is big
and plump and has a well-balanced, rounded shape.
In color it is bright with red and some golden-yellow.
It was first successfully grown right here in Yujing in
1962. The farmer, Mr. Zheng Han-zhi, is known as
the “godfather of Aiwen.” A highlight to see is the
first mango tree, which is now fifty years old. This tree
was relocated to his sister’s place as a “new residence
gift.” They tend to treat the tree as a family member;
they cherish it as it brings them lots of memories. It is a
piece of living history and a national treasure.01

When visiting Yujing, make sure to see Douliu Mountain
(altitude above 350 meters) near Zhongzheng Bridge, as that is
where Aiwen mangoes were first planted in Tawain. Its location in
the rolling hills offers fantastic views of radiant sunrises.
Aiwen MangoAiwen mango ripens June though July. That’is
the reason why in Taiwan it's often called the "Apple-Shih". Its apple-red skin and rich aroma are its best features. Its fruit is soft, velvety with very little fibers and when juiced, it's very sweet. Its smooth texture and the intense fruitiness have won favor with many food connoisseurs. If you buy unripe mangoes, keep them at room temperature. They will continue to ripen at room temperature, becoming sweeter and softer over several days.

Fruity smells merge with the aromas of coffee to arouse your appetite.
There is a trail between Dongshan district and Baihe
district, called “Dongshan’s 175 Coffee Trail.” It brings a
pleasant odor. Walking along the slope, you can see all sorts
of trees in blossom alongside longan flower, coffee flower,
lychee flower and honey orange flower. This place definitely
attracts a lot of tourists for a worthwhile visit.
During the Japanese ruled period, Dongshan’s farmers
grew Arabica coffee, regarded as the world’s best variety, with
organic fertilizer. Those farmers carefully planted coffee and
constantly learned new techniques. Coffee trees had been
gradually adjusted to the temperature. Finally a unique and
unparalleled Taiwan aroma emerged, “Dongshan Coffee,”
which is now ranked as a premium quality coffee. Of course,
the Dongshan district is promoted as one of the famous coffee
production areas.

area is also rich in sweet, green-skinned tangerines. If you are here, you can

Dongshan organic coffee is cultivated in a tropical
climate, the northeast of Tainan; the temperature
difference between day and night is right for cultivation.
Due to its proximity to Zengwen Reservoir, Wushantou
Reservoir, and Baihe Reservoir, the humidityalso helps
the organic cultivation along with the half-day sun
exposure.
When coffee beans ripen to plum and red, the whole
coffee cherries are cleaned, selected and then placed in
the sun to dry. The special coffee bean baking process
brings out the special color with that fragrant smell. The
finished product is a coffee to be savored gracefully in
the mouth without dry and sour taste in your mouth.

Clusters of Longans in the Trees During the Summertime
The arrival of summer announces the bustling time for longan
season. Driving along the 175 coffee trail, you can see longan trees
everywhere, clustered with longans.
The Dongshan longan is the most prominent in Taiwan. In
between March and April, there is a large amount of flowers in
bloom. At the same time, in longan orchards, longan flower honey
is produced by hard-working bees. Around July and August, it is the
harvest season of longan, also the best time to make dried longans.
They use age-old, traditional drying kiln methods to dry longans.
Thus, dried longans still maintain the original flavor. The Taiwanese
baker Wu Pao-Chu earned the title of Master Baker in the bread
category of the 2010 Bakery Masters competition (Les Masters de la
Boulangerie) in France. He highly praises the Dongshan longan and
uses them as a prestigious ingredient in his baked goods.

Soaking in theHealthy Mud Springs of Guanzihling
Appreciating the beauty of the mountains and the old streets
The original discovery of Guanzihling Hot
Springs took place since the Japanese colonial
period and its development has been carried on for
a century to date. After soaking in the springs, the
whole body feels relaxed. You are also recommended
to experience hiking activities in the area. There
are guides to lead groups of tourists on walks
through the lush scenery, the knotted hills and
mountains. The whole area and atmosphere is truly
enchanting. The Hotel Guanzihling, has a history of
over 100 years. There is also the temple of Central
Acalanatha, the fearsome pedestrian trail of about
300 steps and a wooden stairway to Lingding oak.

There are two hot spring outcrops;
one is around the Policeman Recreation
Institution and the other under Huowangye
Temple. Walk around the old streets in
Guanzihling, experience the hot spring and
observe the history which goes back over
The unique mud spring forms the most
distinct feature of Guanzihling Hot Springs
in Guanzihling Scenice Area. Because of
the local geology, which consists of layers
of mudstone, the escaping hot spring water
contains mud-stone particles and various
minerals and salts. They are of an alkaline
carbonated type, and have a dense sulphuric
content. The springs, which have a creamy
feel, have temperatures between 75 and 80
degrees Celsius. As a result, the spring water
appears black, which is why the springs
here are termed the “Black Hot Springs.”

Huowangye Sacrifice
During the Japanese colonial per iod,
Japanese soldiers stationed near here discovered
Guanzihling Hot Springs and “The Water
and Fire Cave.” According to the laws of
nature, water and fire should be incompatible.
Nevertheless, due to the unique geology of this
spot, natural gas escapes from the cliff face, and
ignites to form an eternal flame. Spring water
also gushes from fissures in the cliff, creating the
paradoxical phenomenon of “fire in water and
water in fire.” Japanese enshrined and worshipped
Fudõ-myõõ, which is the full Japanese name for
Huowangye. Thus, the residents erected the stone
of Huowangye.
After the retrocession of Taiwan in 1945,
the residents built the Huowangye Temple
and remodeled the statue of Huowangye. The
birthday ceremony is held on July 24th of the
lunar calendar every year. Huowangye is regarded
as a tutelary god for Guanzihling Hot Spring. It is
the only one in Taiwan.01

In 2012, Siraya National Scenic Area
Administration were working together with
the hot spring communities to present a
series of activities. One of the activities is
the introduction of Huowangye Sacrifice.
It was mere a blend of Taiwanese and
Japanese regarding their religions, cultures,
and customs other than expressing their
similarities.

Summertime!Cruising in the LotusVillage
A field of lotus flower blossoms
The peak of the blooming season is the best
time to ride a bike and immerse yourself in the
poetic scenery in the Lotus Village, Baihe. There
was an idiom from a Northern Song “Dyansty”
which describes the lotus flower as coming out of
the mud unsoiled and how it remains undefiled
in spite of general corruption and the filth of its
surroundings. In other words, “the lotus is a flower
that grows in the mud.” The thicker and deeper the
mud is, the more beautiful the lotus blooms.
Blue sky, red lotus flowers and
green leaves - what a magnificent picture!

Baihe is situated in Tainan City, and with intensive planting in recent
years it has become the largest producer of lotus seeds and lotus roots in all
of Taiwan. It has earned itself the reputation as “Lotus Village.” The lotuses
bloom most luxuriantly every summer, and at this time Baihe organizes a
series of Lotus Festival activities to attract huge numbers of tourists. If you
want to see lotus blossoms, you should make a one-day journey.
The three main iconic lotus areas for admiring the flowers are: Liantan,
Dajhu, and Jhumen. The seemingly unending expanse of lotus fields provide
some of the island's most unique farm scenery. You can observe farmers and
peasants chatting whilst shelling lotus seeds. In winter, it is time to pick lotus
roots for making lotus root starch. The dry lotus root starch is produced
by using dry lotus roots as raw materials. The complex process comprises
washing, triturating and drying in the sun.

Boundless fun at a lotus banquet
You can either take a stroll or ride a bike to admire
the lotus flowers and their growing environment. Local
farmers also promote their “royal Victoria,” the so-
called giant water lily. It is well known for its huge
circular leaves, which are often pictured with a small
child sitting in the center as a demonstration of their
size and strength.
During the Baihe Lotus Festival, the local farmers
use the opportunity to promote both educational
and recreational activities. You can experience
activities such as storytelling by local elders and listen
to how they describe the beauty of Baihe. You can
experience the fun of picking lotus roots. You are also
recommended to visit the Baihe Pottery Shop which
is located in Cinei Villlage. It is the lotus flower art
studio of local artist Lin Wen-yue. His expertise lies in
creating ink paintings, pottery and traditional Taiwan
pots. His works are quite varied, and his style reflects a
strong local flavor and originality.01

Stroll Along the Path, Appreciate the Plum Blossom
The plum blossom is in full bloom every year from December till January or February of the following
year, the local sign of the coming spring. In Taiwan, appreciating the plum blossom during the winter
season has become a grand tour event.
Meiling Scenic Area is situated on the hill in NanxiDistrict. In previous times, it was well-known for
producing a special variety of bananas, and commonly referred to as “Banana Mountain.” Mass production
eventually led to an agricultural recession; thus, the banana trees were replaced by plum trees. When the
former vice president Xie Dongmin visited this place, he saw that the whole mountain was bursting with
plum blossoms, and officially assigned its new name to Meiling (plum peak or plum hill). This is one of
Taiwan's largest plum-growing areas.
Meifeng Ancient Trail was used as the main business path for product delivery between Nanhua
and NanxiDistricts. The trail is gently sloped and easy to walk on. Between April and May, this is the
ideal place to view millions of fireflies lighting up summer nights. Walking along the way there are scenic
attractions.

Collecting Red Water Chestnuts
Autumn is full of vitality in Guantian
The main feature of autumn is the shedding of leaves from deciduous
trees as they die and pave the way for the new growth of the following
spring, symbolizing the new hope and new growth of spring. But not
only is autumn a season of leaf shedding, it is also a season of mellow
fruitfulness. In Guantian, Tainan, September and October mark the peak
season for water chestnuts. The curved line of a water chestnut looks
like a smile; it is thought of as the smiling vegetable, symbolizing the full
vitality and warmth of autumn in Guantian. Water chestnuts thrive in
water as aquatic plants, especially in swampy areas. It is important for a
good yield to have sufficient depth of soil for good root growth. Guantian
is at the foot of Wushantou Reservoir, consisting mainly of flat and
irrigated land. The reservoir is a pool of running water, providing a perfect
environment for water chestnuts. The water clarity and soil quality
provide excellent conditions - the red water chestnuts are very, very tasty
in Guantian.

Pheasant-tailed jacanas are content in the happy environment.
Guantian is also well-known as the Pheasant-tailed Jacana zone which is open to the public year-round.
A large hide overlooks one of the ponds and there are always water birds to be seen, even if the Pheasanttailed
Jacanas themselves are hard to spot. It became a matter of local pride so local volunteers did a lot of the work
to convert the site, erecting fences and plant flowers and trees. Lotus, water chestnuts and a variety of other
flora were propagated. In Tainan, after six years of effort, the number of Pheasant-tailed Jacana now exceeds
two hundred. Tainan County in 1997 named the pheasant-tailed jacana as the Tainan County bird.
Pheasant-tailed Jacanas are beautiful and elegant resident birds in Taiwan. They are also known as the
“limbo fairy” and the “water chestnut bird.” It is easier to find traces of them in the lotus fields and water
chestnut ponds.
01
109
The fragrance from the water chestnuts spreads everywhere in Guantian.
In the Japanese Colonial Period, this place was called Guantian Jhuang
and has long since made a name for itself nationwide as Taiwan’s top
producer of water chestnuts. All over Guantian you can see farmers out
collecting their harvest, rowing their boats out in the fields in their full-body
wet weather gear, and turning leaf after leaf to collect chestnuts. It is a picture
of pastoral elegance.
Water chestnuts are frequently added to stir-fries, stuffing, and dumpling
fillings for extra texture and a sweet flavor. When steamed, the outside
covering becomes blackened and it tastes starchy, sort of like a potato.
Chinese herbalists believe water chestnuts can help sweeten the breath.
