FIRST THougHTSDavid Hull, Pastor
In January of this year I wrote the following words in my First Thoughts article:
I want to invite you to take part in “ENCouRAgEMENT 10:25.” What is that? Let’s start by going to the Bible. We read in Hebrews 10:24-25 these words, “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you
see the Day drawing near.” (ESV) Look at the themes that are in the great passage. The writer of Hebrews is exhorting the church to come together in faithful attendance and to encourage and stir each other up so that this faithful attendance will happen. We miss something as followers of Jesus when we “neglect to meet together.” We are strengthened when we gather for worship and the study of the Bible.
I want to encourage you – to stir you up – to faithful attendance in Bible Study during this year. give some prayerful consideration to a goal that is right for you. Think in terms of percentages. What percent of the Sundays will you commit to being in Bible Study? We all have different situations in life, so our goals will all be different. What is right for you? Begin by selecting a number that will represent your Bible Study attendance percentage for 2012. It is good to start with a goal.
Next, write that number down and put it in your Bible. You do not have to turn anything in to the church – this is a commitment between you and god. The idea is very simple – we are not printing up “commitment cards” or “campaign brochures.” All you need is one number, a piece of paper, and your Bible. Put the paper where you will see it often and it can be a visual reminder to you of your goal for the year.
Now that 2012 is more than half over, I am just checking in. For those who have set personal goals for Bible Study attendance this year, it might be a good time to look back and see how your attendance matches your goals. As a new church year approaches, look ahead and renew your commitment to “meet together” as we study god’s Word here at First Baptist Church.
“Encouragement 10:25” – “stirring one another up to love and good works.” I hope to see you in Bible Study and worship this Sunday.
