President's Report

I hope everyone enjoyed our nation’s birthday. It is predicted that the Southeast is due for one of the hottest summers on record. Please when you go out rock hounding this summer remember to wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water.

Recently when I was out at the Memphis Gem and Mineral annual show. The 901 Rocks had a booth promoting their group. Back in 2016 five people decided to start painting and hiding rocks. It is their twist on geocaching. They now have more than 42,000 followers. They post clues on their website to lead explorers to their prize rock. After someone finds a rock they go on to the 901Rocks Community Facebook page or tag a post on twitter or Instagram with #901Rocks. You can either keep the rock as atreasure or re-hide the rock so it can brighten someone else’s day. If you would like to find out more information about the group you can visit their website at http://www.901rocks.com. (Editors note: there are several local groups that do similar caching. I am a member of the one active for my county.)

There are still classes available at the July, August and September Wildacres workshops. Please visit http://sfmsworkshops.com for class descriptions.

Committee Reports

Education

Well, our very first July session at Wildacres is upon us! But there’s still time for last minute signups. If you’re thinking about signing up for the July, August or September session please get your applications in as soon as possible. Currently enrollment for the August and Septembersession is slightly down from previous years. I believe some students that usually attended in August or September have opted to attend the July session.

The SFMS Workshops needs your support so please signup for a class! Keeping our attendance numbers up is important. It affects both the William Holland and the Wilddacres workshops in many ways.

The Workshop website (www.SFMSWORKSHOPS.com) has a list of all the available classes and an application. Be aware that a few of the classes for the July and August sessions are already full.

If you have any questions feel free to contact Rosemary (WA Director) or Linda (WA Registrar). I have listed their contact info below.

And last but definitely not least – I would like to thank Kristine Robertson and Heidi Wetzel for a job well done at the William Holland session. I have heard nothing but great things from everyone. Lisa Roberts (Assistant Education Chair) was there for a while and she also had nothing but positive things to say. Heidi has finished her two year term as Registrar and has trained her replacement. Please welcome Amy Bland as the new William Holland session Registrar for 2018-2019.

Wildacres 2017

Hello everyone you still have time to join us at Wildacres SFMS Workshop Julys session starting Sunday the 23rd.

Our own SFMS Secretary Jerry Heer is teaching her award wining Gem Trees. I'm surprised she still has a couple of openings in her class.

Gail DeLuca Owner of White Fox Beads in Knoxville TN teaches nation wide and has been a frequent guest expert on Jewel School on Jewelry TV. So if you don't take her class stop by and get her autograph one of our own TV Stars. If you are a beginner to advanced beader you have to come and take Gails class it's just a no brainer.

For an easy going class of learning multiple cold connection jewelry techniques Morning Sherrods

Creative Jewelry Designs is going to be a great class. A class full of earrings, pendants and bracelets take a week off and have a lot of fun .

It has been years since SFMS Workshop has offered a Raku Pottery class.

Gary Lee Owner and resident Potter of Rising Sun Pottery teaches regularly at Wildacres. This class isfor bead lovers who can make their own beads and some special Wildacres wall hanging all fired in the raku kiln. Bead lovers how can you pass up a class like this?

Please cheek out sfmsworkshops.com for all our classes July 23-29 session is almost here but if you can't get away take a look at August 21-27 and September 18-24. Come and join us up in the North Carolina .mountains we have Wildacres great staff, great food from the kitchen and the classes are always lots of fun.

Don't miss out on the fun. If you have any questions on any classes or teachers please give me a yell

Safety

Summer has arrived. And along with this is the summer thunderstorms and heavy rains. This is better than the drought of last year, in some ways. It does mean we have more yard work. I have already cut the grass more this year than last, thanks to the rain. Also, my tussle with Wisteria has dramatically increased. This stuff seems to grow about as fast as Kudzu. And with the more yard work, there is an increased chance of ticks finding their way onto your clothes and maybe your body.

I do not know whether there are more ticks or less political news. Anyway, be careful, our dog has only picked up one tick this year. However, a work cohort has “captured” a tick and of course very carefully removed the offending critter.

The other thing that has increased is the number of storms which bring the rain. Several weeks ago, I was sitting on a porch and watching the storm which seemed to be several milesaway. Then there was the typical flash-bang indicating that I was not being safe sitting on the porch. So needless to say, I went inside. Storm folks warn that lightning can be a hazard as long as 30 minutes after the body of the storm has past. Driving toward the mountains severalweeks ago, there was a flash that was quite some distance from the storm. It actually looked like it came from a clear sky. So heed the warning and be safe. Lee Trevino was asked about playing in a storm and his comment was something like “Oh, I use a one iron, even God can not hit a one iron”, and followed by a hearty laugh. He then admitted that storms were one of his greatest fears.

When I worked in Charlotte, NC, I was sitting on the 5th floor of our building and was watching a severe storm. Suddenly a tree some 100 feet from the building was shattered. The

remnants of the tree fell all around a brand new car. The next thing I saw was the car owner running through the heavy rain and moved his car to the remote area of the parking lot. He then returned holding an umbrella. He did make it safely back into the building.

So be careful with summer storms. Over the years, the house that I have lived in has had Lightning run into the house on only 2 occasions. We were lucky in both cases, only lost an old TV. In one case the next door neighbor had the Lightning run into his kitchen burned all of the metal border off the counters and “fried” a new TV. We lived on the east side of Greenville,SC, a neighbor house was hit and the resulting fire destroyed the house,

So be safe, consider what your environment and watch the amazing nature’s fireworks, but safely.

Scholarship

SFMS Workshop Scholarship Drawing

We have received a lot more prizes for the workshop drawing. So far we have had 43 donations for prizes. Each prize donated means a chance for the donating club to be in the drawing for the scholarships to next year’s SFMS workshops. The number of scholarships depends on the amount of money received by the clubs for the tickets. The drawing for the prizes will be held before the banquet at the SFMS annual dinner in October at the Annual Meeting in Knoxville. The drawing for scholarships will be held shortly afterwards so the winning clubs can be notified before the 2018 workshops are announced. It will be up to the winning clubs to decide how to distribute the scholarships. Hopefully, we will be able to award several scholarships. The scholarships will be for the amount of the SFMS workshops, not including transportation and supplies.
