Another way to think about a negotiation is simply a conversation with multiple outcomes. When presenting your point of view, it’s always a good idea to offer at least three options that you’re willing to consider. If you’re prepared with both some options to consider, plus the reasons behind your suggestions, you set the groundwork for a productive conversation.
Another way to think about a negotiation is simply a conversation with multiple outcomes. The only downside to negotiating is if you are unwilling to listen and be collaborative about the solution. If you have a take-it-or-leave-it attitude, that’s not a negotiation, it’s likely a ticket to finding a new job.
When you’re negotiating with your boss, it’s a good idea to speak from your perspective, using phrases like:
