BASILICA OF SAINT MARY STAFF
USHERS NEEDED FOR SUNDAY 5 P.M. MASS
Usher volunteers are urgently needed for the Sunday 5 p.m. Mass. Duties involve
assisting with seating, taking up collections and assisting with orderly reception
of the Holy Eucharist. If you are interested or willing to help, just attend the
5 p.m. Sunday Mass and ask for Doug Maltricht, or contact Randy MacPherson at 202.812.0194. Both permanent and
periodic assistance are needed. Thank you!
PENTECOST Today, June 9, we celebrate Pentecost, from the Greek word Pentecoste meaning 50th day. It culminates the 40 days of Our Lord’s time on earth after He rose from the dead on Easter, plus the nine days of prayer (the first novena) of Mary and the Apostles as they waited in the Upper Room for the Spirit that Jesus had promised He would send to them. Let us pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the world, on the Church, on our nation and on our families.
Veni, Sancte Spiritus (Excerpt from the Sequence from the Mass of Pentecost)
Holy Spirit, Lord of Light,
From the clear celestial height, Thy pure beaming radiance give.
Light immortal, Light divine,
Visit thou these hearts of thine, And our inmost being fill.
Heal our wounds, our strength renew;
On our dryness pour thy dew, Wash the stains of guilt away.
Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray.
Thou, on us who evermore
Thee confess and thee adore, With thy sevenfold gifts descend.
Give us comfort when we die; Give us life with thee on high; Give us joys that never end.
SAVE THE DATE: June 23
On Sunday, June 23, the Feast of Corpus Christi, we will have our traditional procession from the Basilica to the cemetery (1001 South Royal Street) and back immediately after the 5 p.m. Mass. That Mass will be celebrated by Father Andrew, who leaves us for his new parish assign-ment at Saint Louis Church on June 27. Following the procession on Sunday, we will have a farewell reception for Father Andrew in the Lyceum from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Many thanks to our Knights of Columbus and Catholic Daughters who are making arrangements for the farewell event. I hope to see you at both the procession and the reception.

DAILY MASS INTENTIONS
FORMED.ORG FREE, comprehensive, online library of Catholic resources is available at https://stmaryoldtown.formed.org
Liturgical Calendar This Week June 10. The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. On February 11, 2018, the Vatican decreed the Monday after Pentecost as the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. "Mary is at once Mother of Christ, the Son of God, and mother of the members of His Mystical Body, which is the Church," the decree said. "These considerations derive from the divine motherhood of Mary and from her inti-mate union in the work of the Redeemer, which culmi-nated at the hour of the cross." June 11. Saint Barnabas, Apostle. First century. Preached the Gospel in Antioch; companion of Paul; attended the Council of Jerusalem. Martyred on and patron of Cyprus, the island of his birth. June 13. Saint Anthony of Padua, Priest and Doctor of the Church. From Lisbon. Member of the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscan). Devoted student of scrip-ture; first friar to teach theology to his fellow friars. Gift-ed orator and preacher. Known as the “Evangelical Doctor.” Patron saint of Portugal, of the poor and of lost articles. Died in 1231 at the age of 36.

From your St. Vincent de Paul Society(SVdP) Eugenia and her two little ones were facing eviction as she had been out of work for several weeks after sur-gery. Tomas and his wife Rita were struggling with medical bills for their little ones. Linda fell behind on her electric bills as she was between housekeeping jobs. These are a few examples of Hispanic families here in
Alexandria we have helped recently. And there are many, many more. Your finan-cial contribution to SVdP helps us help them. If you can join us as a volunteer, you will see directly how these families are relieved of enormous worry and stress
by these efforts. For more information, contact Jim Larocco at rocca-rocco@usa.net.
