What’s Been Happening in the YLP?
The K-State Youth Livestock Program has completed another busy summer. With Livestock Nominations, Discovery Days, K-State Animal Sciences Leadership Academy, Swine Classic, county fairs, Kansas 4-H Livestock Sweepstakes, Kansas Junior Livestock Show, and the Kansas State Fair, it has certainly been an exciting few months! The involvement and leadership among Kansas youth is truly impressive. The youth continue to be interested in their projects, always eager to learn more and better themselves as leaders in the livestock industry. Thank you to all youth who have participated in Youth Livestock Program events and to parents, leaders, Extension Agents, and those who have influenced their participation and dedication to Kansas 4-H and FFA.

Discovery Days
Kansas 4-H Discovery Days were held May 31st-June 3rd in Manhattan, KS. Members from across Kansas came together to learn about a variety of topics in classes led by K-State faculty, KSRE professionals, and other volunteers. This included several animal science-related workshops.
Dr. Dale Blasi, Professor and State Beef Extension Specialist, led two sessions over chuck wagon cooking. After educating youth on the historical connection between chuck wagon cooking and the cattle industry, the 4-H’ers learned how chuck wagon cooking evolved, as well as etiquette. Following the discussion, youth were divided into teams and got to put what they learned into action by making a variety of dishes in Dutch ovens.
Swine graduate students Lori Thomas and Kiah Gourley offered a workshop on pig production. This session included educating youth on swine nutrition, an in-depth look at the different phases of the pork industry, how pork production has changed over the last century, biosecurity, and the role U.S. pork plays in the world market.
Dr. Travis O’Quinn and several meat science graduate students led a workshop on meat judging. Members were introduced to the criteria and standards for judging meats, and got to implement their new skills by evaluating meat products.
Joe Carpenter, Barb Downey, and Anna Carpenter provided an opportunity for youth to learn an alternative method of halter-breaking and working with cattle through a low stress cattle handling workshop. After participating in a discussion about cattle behavior, 4-H’ers watched a demonstration over low-stress techniques. Then, members received one-on-one instruction as they worked with presenters to practice what they learned, using two calves fresh out of the pasture.
Youth Livestock Coordinator, Lexie Hayes, and intern Emily Voris, presented a workshop on the opportunities in the Youth Livestock Program. An overview of the events and programs offered was presented, as well as suggestions on how families can get involved at every level—from county to state. Attendees also participated in a skillathon and quiz bowl contest.
Look for 2017 4-H Discovery Days classes hosted by the Youth Livestock Program and the K-State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry.

K-State Animal Sciences Leadership Academy
Forty high school students from seven states gathered on the Kansas State University campus to take part in two twenty-person sessions during the 9th annual K-State Animal Sciences Leadership Academy (KASLA) June 8-11 and June 29-July 2.
During their time at the K-State Animal Sciences Leadership Academy, students were given tours of the farms, the College of Veterinary Medicine, local corpo-rations, and engaged in interactive leadership development sessions. The day of industry tours included stops at the O.H. Kruse Feed Innovation Center, Manhattan, Flint Hills Discovery Center, Manhattan, Hildebrand Farms Dairy, Junction City, Kansas Livestock Association, Topeka, Bichelmeyer Meats, Kansas City, and the American Royal, Kansas City. Participants also stayed in the dorms and ate in the KSU dining halls, adding to their college experience.
For their final project, the students were divided into groups during the week to focus on current issues affecting the livestock industry. Faculty mentors from the K-State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry assisted each group. Using information they learned throughout the academy, each group was asked to present their subject as part of the closing reception on the final day. About 100 family, friends, and members of the K-State community attended the closing reception to honor the graduates and hear their thoughts on these important livestock issues.
The event was sponsored by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council (LMIC) and coordinated by the K-State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry.
Dr. Bob Hines Swine Classic
The 2016 Dr. Bob Hines Kansas Youth Swine Classic was held July 8-9 at Cico Park on the Riley County Fairgrounds in Manhattan. There were 99 youth from 38 different counties across the state who brought 227 swine projects to exhibit at the show and learning event. Kansas youth exhibited pigs in the prospect show, market show, and showmanship. There were also 72 participants in the swine skillathon contest and 16 photos presented in the “People’s Choice” photography contest.
