•Kamal Nath serves as a member of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s Parliament, and as the union cabinet minister of urban development.

•Previously, he acted as the minister of environment and forests, minister of textiles, and minister of commerce and industry.

•Elected from the district of Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh, Kamal Nath is a member of the INC, which has played a major role in the country’s development.

•Celebrated as the world’s largest and oldest democratically based political party, the INC got its start in 1885, when the country was under British colonial rule.

•Its founders and early members advocated for economic reform and greater influence of the Indian people on public policy.

•In the 1920s, the INC supported Mohandas Gandhi as he began to lead a widely adopted plan of non-violent, passive resistance to British oppression.

•When the INC sought to win greater democratic freedoms during World War II, Britain outlawed participation in its activities and arrested its leadership.

•In 1946, the partition of India resulted in the creation of Pakistan, and in 1947, India finally won its independence.

•Jawaharlal Nehru led the party and served as the new nation’s first prime minister until his death in 1964.

•Afterwards, the INC continued to dominate the country’s elections, with Nehru’s daughter, Indira Gandhi, serving as the prime minister from 1966 until the party’s first loss since independence in 1977.

•In 1980, she regained control and served until 1984, when she was assassinated.

•She was succeeded by her son, Rajiv Gandhi.

•During the succeeding two decades, the INC alternately gained and lost power, with party leaders P.V. Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh elected prime minister in the 1990s and in 2004, respectively.

•Singh currently holds the office.
