Publisher’s Greeting
Well Family, a new year is almost upon un. So much has happened since we started on this fantastic voy-
age we call Black Pearl. A lot of successes and a few failures. But we have always maintained our dig-
nity through the many obstacles that we’ve encountered.
If you’re able to read a copy of Black Pearl, that probably means that you are one of the more for-
tunate and blessed amongst us. So many of our fellow brethren doesn’t have the means or capabilities to
pick up a copy of Black Pearl and experience all it has to offer. For too many life is just a struggle to sur-
vive and hold on to some form of normalcy and dignity.
As we sit and rejoice through this holiday season with our many family and friends, please don’t
forget to think about the thousands in our very own community that won’t be feeling the same joy as you.
Far too many will just be in the streets and shelters trying to survive. Many have no idea where they will
lay their heads tonight or where their next meal will come from.
For those of us with little children, when Christmas morning arrives and we go through the tradi-
tion of watching our kids open the many gifts under the beautiful tree, please remember that there are so
many children that will be opening nothing. No tree, no gifts, no hope for so many.
As we all make our New Years Resolutions about losing weight, learning a new language or what-
ever you lie to yourself about every year at this time, let’s just promise ourselves to do more for the less
fortunate in 2011. Many charities and shelters really need our help and support. Even if you can’t give
money, your time and encouragement can be just as valuable. Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Love You All

F or a lot of us, winter is just
around the corner. So it’s
time to take some extra care to be
sure that you have the right tools to
properly beautify yourself and protect
your skin during these colder
months.
Make sure that you “winterize” your
skin and beauty care regime with
these “must-have” items.
1) Moisturizers. This means a
moisturizer not only for your
face, but for your hands, your
feet, your legs, your arms –
every where! Simply apply an oil
-based moisturizer or lotion to
your skin after each and every
shower and you will keep your
skin hydrated and better pro-
tected against the cold.
2) Lip Balm. Winter is the time of year where almost everyone
falls prey to chapped lips, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Be
sure to pick a great lip balm that will hydrate your lips and pro-
tect them from such things as cold temperatures, wind, dry air
and also moist air. The best kind of lip balms are waxy and can
be applied smoothly to the lips.
TIP: Petroleum jelly can also be used as a great lip balm. The
good thing about petroleum jelly is that it can be used for a
number of things. If you find yourself suffering from dry or
cracked skin during the colder months, such as cracked skin
on your elbows or feet, apply petroleum jelly over top of the
skin. Your skin will be moisturized and crack
-free in just a few days!
3) Don’t forget the sunscreen! One fatal
error that women often make is believing
that because the sun may not be shining as
brightly during these winter months that they
do not need protection from the sun’s harm-
ful rays. WRONG! The sun’s rays are still
coming through the clouds, and the reflec-
tion of any light off of white or lighter sur-
faces (such as snow) will cause even more
damage to your skin. Make sure you use a
moisturizer or apply a separate sunscreen to
your face that has an SPF of 15 or higher.
4) Exfoliate regularly. As your skin tends to
become drier during the winter time, it’s es-
pecially important to take the time to exfoli-
ate not only your face, but your whole body.
Invest in a quality body wash that includes an exfoliating com-
ponent, or use a tool that will help slough off those dead skin
cells.
5) Body butter. Okay, so this is a bit of an indulgence to help
keep your skin supple and soft during those harsh winter
months, but it really is a treat that is well deserved! Body butter
is even better than using a lotion or moisturizer because it is
thicker and can actually soothe any irritated skin. After you ap-
ply body butter to your skin, you will notice that your skin will
actually stay smooth all day long! You don’t have to spend a ton of money to winterize your beauty routine. Make sure you take the time to indulge your skin a bit more this winter and enjoy healthier, smoother skin.
Take these steps to head off damage to
your skin!

O n a Sunny Saturday morning in
November I met up with a group of mod-
els that have forever changed my percep-
tions about what Detroit Fashion could
be about. In a newly renovated Boutique
in Downtown Pontiac, Designer Jacquie
Barbavian and her gorgeous models
wore out two camera batteries as they
rocked some of the most original fash-
ions around.
Sophisticated elegance was the
theme of the shoot. An array of fabrics
rich in color and texture. They are pro-
fessionally sewn and crafted to the high-
est standards.
So ladies, if you’re in search of
the finest and most original fashions that
Michigan has to offer, give Jacquie a

I n our opinion, the best show of the season!! Well planned, well choreo-
graphed and a great venue! Shooting this show I was thrilled how they were
able to blend the fashion and hair industry into one cohesive event. The vendors
were friendly as were the staff of the Crofoot Ballroom. Black Pearl magazine is
looking forward to next years show!!
