IntroductionThisguideservesasasupplementtotheUniversityCatalogandothergeneralpolicydocumentsproducedbytheOBUDivisionofMusic.Itprovidesanoverviewofthepolicies,procedures,andinformationneededforsuccessfulcompletionofcurricularandperformancerequirementsintheKeyboardStudiesdegrees.Mission

SucceedinginKeyboardStudies RegardlessofwhichdegreeyouarepursuinginKeyboardStudies,thisguideisdesignedtoassistyoufromyourfirstmomentsonourcampustoyourgraduation.IfatanypointalongthisjourneyyouhaveANYquestions(andtherewillbemany),pleasebesuretoaskafacultymemberforguidanceandclarification.Weareheretohelpyouachieveyourhighestpotential.

Thekeytosuccessinanycourseofstudyistounderstandtherequirementsandexpectationsforeachstepoftheprocess,toequipyourselfwiththeknowledgeandtoolstoaccomplisheachtask,andtoengageineachundertakingwithmotivationanddiscipline.Thisguidewillhelporientyoutotheserequirementsandexpectations,andthefacultywillalsobeconsistentlysupervisingyouandencouragingyouinyourprogresstowardthecompletionofyourdegree.AuditionRequirementsAllprospectivemusicmajorswithapianoemphasismustauditionforscholarshipconsiderationandforstudioassignment.AuditionsarescheduledthroughtheFineArtsOfficeandarecoordinatedbytheDirectorofCommunityRelationsandRecruitmentfortheCollegeofFineArtsinconsultationwiththeCoordinatorofKeyboardStudies.Thepianoauditionconsistsof:

Althoughtherearenotspecifickeyboardauditionrequirementsforsecondarypianostudents,musicminors,andnon-musicmajors,anassessmentisnecessarytoensureappropriateplacementinkeyboardstudies.StudioAssignmentsEachincomingstudentiswelcometoindicateinwritingapreferenceforhisorherprimaryappliedinstructor.TheKeyboardStudiesfacultyrecognizestheimportanceofmatchingeachstudentwithanappropriateteacher.However,itisalsoourbeliefthatallpianostudentswillbenefitgreatlyfromstudywithanyofthepianoinstructorsatOklahomaBaptistUniversity.Wewillseriouslyconsiderallwrittenpreferences,buttheremaybeinstanceswhenthesepreferencescannotbeaccommodated.Ifthereareconcernsregardingtheappropriatefitinstudioassignments,pleasefeelfreetodiscussthiswiththeCoordinatorofKeyboardStudies.Ifsuchissuesariseonceappliedstudiesbegin,firstdiscussanyproblemswiththeappliedinstructorsothataresolutioncanbesoughtbeforebringingthemtotheKeyboardCoordinator.AdvisingandPlanningEachmusicstudentisassignedanAcademicAdvisortoassistinplanningcourseworkforeachsemester,tohelphimorherthroughtheundergraduateprocess,andtobeaguideincareerplanning.Typically,theadvisoristheprimaryappliedinstructor,buttherearetimeswhenthisisnotthecase.EvenifyourappliedteacherisnotyourAcademicAdvisor,besuretoconsultwithhimorhereachsemestertomakesureyouareontrackwithyourcourseworkfordegreecompletion.Althoughtheadvisorisaninvaluableresource,itisultimatelythestudent’sresponsibilitytobefamiliarwithdegreeplancourserequirementsandtobefamiliarwiththeAcademicCatalogandMusicStudentHandbook.LessonsAppliedlessonsconsistofindividualinstruction,arescheduledonaweeklybasis,andlasteither25minutesor50minutesdependingonthenumberofcredithoursinwhichthestudentisenrolled.Besuretofamiliarizeyourselfwiththespecificattendancepolicyfoundinyourteacher’ssyllabus.Alllessonsmissedbyyourteacherwillberescheduledlateratamutuallyconvenienttime.Althoughyourteachermaychoosetoprovideamake-uplessonwhenyouaretheoneresponsibleforthecancellation,noteacherisrequiredtoofferamake-uplessonhe/shedidnotpostpone.

Appliedlessonsarethefoundationofgrowthandachievementinperformancestudies.Itisduringthistimethataninstructorcanfocusspecificallyonanindividual’sgapsinknowledge,weaknessesintechnique,andplotacoursefromtheinitialauditiontoprofessionalcompetencyinperformancebythetimeofgraduation.Becauseofthis,itisextremelyimportantthatexpectations,goals,andrequirementsarecommunicatedandunderstoodbetweentheinstructorandstudent.Thesediscussionscanandshouldtakeplacebefore,during,andafterthelesson,aswellasoutsideofthelesson.Althoughsomespecificrequirementsareoutlinedbelowinregardtoperformanceexpectations,ifthereiseveranyquestionregardingthesegoalsandexpectationsfromlessontolesson,besuretoaskyourinstructorforclarification.PracticeDailypracticerequirementsforeachdegreereflectthenumberofcredithoursenrolledinappliedstudy(1credithour=1hourofpracticeeachday).Theamountofrepertoiretobelearned,aswellasitsdifficulty,isalsoareflectionofthenumberofcredithours.A2-credithourcoursewillrequiremorerepertoiretobelearnedandatahigherlevelofdifficultythana1-credithourcourse,thusnecessitatingtheadditionalhourofpracticeeachday.Thelevelofdifficultyalsoincreaseswitheachsemesterofstudy,sothatupongraduationeachstudenthasreachedalevelofprofessionalcompetencyforhisorherspecificdegree.Practicemanagementandtechniqueswillbediscussedthroughoutthesemesteratlessonsandstudioclasses.Again,iftherearequestionsregardingpracticemethods,practicetimemanagement,orthegoalsandexpectationsforweeklyorsemesterperformances,pleaseaskyourinstructorforclarification.StudioClassesEachstudiomeetsweeklyatatimedesignatedbytheinstructor.Whileteachersvaryinhowtheyspecificallyutilizestudioclass,itisatimefortheentirestudiotolearninagroupsettingthroughdiscussions,performances,critiques,andotheractivities.Evenifnotspecificallyscheduledtoperformatagivenclass,thosewithpianoemphasesshouldbepreparedtoplaysomethingmemorizedateverystudioclass.Studio-classperformancesuggestionsandassignmentswillbediscussedduringweeklylessonsaswellasduringstudioclasstimes.PianoSeminarAllstudentswithpianoemphasismustregisterforPianoSeminar(MUPR1200),inwhichstudentsgainexperienceperformingmusicbeforealargergroupthantheirprofessor’sstudioclass.Thosenotperforminghearpianorepertoirethatbroadenstheirknowledgeoftheliteraturewhilesupportingtheirdepartmentalcolleagues.StudentsenrolledinPianoSeminararerequiredtoperformatleasttwice(i.e.twoseparatepieces)eachsemester.Inadditiontostudentperformances,thehourincludesdiscussionsorpresentationsontopicsrelevanttokeyboardstudyaswellaslisteningtoandviewingperformancesbykeyboardmasters.

GeneralRecitalGeneralRecitalsconsistofperformancesbystudentsthroughouttheDivisionofMusic,andarescheduledonvariousdatesthroughoutthesemester(pleaseconsulttheDivisionofMusiccalendarorrecitalattendancesyllabus).StudentswithpianoemphasisarerequiredtoperformatleastonceeachsemesteronaGeneralRecital,butonlyafterasuccessfulperformanceofthesamematerialinPianoSeminar,asevaluatedbytheirappliedinstructor.Pleaseworkwithyourappliedteachertoplantheschedulingofperformancesaccordingly.AlsonotethattheGeneralRecitalPerformanceRequestform(includedinthisguide,availableonline,andavailableintheFineArtsoffice)requiresthesignatureofthestudent,teacher,andaccompanist(ifany).TechniqueJuriesTechniquejuriesareheldonceasemester(inNovemberduringthefallsemesterandinAprilduringtheSpringsemester.Techniquerequirementsvarywitheachdegreeplan,andareincludedonthetechniquepageincludedinthisguide.StudentspursuingaBMA,BME,orBMWorshipStudiesdegreemustcompletetechniquelevel3inordertograduate,withlevel1completedbythetimeoftheSophomoreBarrierExam.StudentspursuingaBMperformancedegreemustcompleteallsevenlevels,withlevels1-3completedbythetimeoftheSophomoreBarrierExam.(AlsoseetheincludedSophomoreBarrierExam).PerformanceJuriesAperformancejuryistheequivalenttothefinalexaminappliedmusicstudy.Allstudentsenrolledinpianostudyarerequiredtoperformajuryattheendofthesemester(unlessadegreerecitalwasgivenduringthelatterhalfofthesemester).PianoperformancejuriesforthosewithpianoemphasisaregenerallyscheduledonthefinalThursdayofclasseseachsemester.Pianojuriesforsecondarystudentsandnon-musicmajorsgenerallyoccuronthefirsttwodaysoffinalsweek.Youwillbeinformedatyourfirstlesson,studioclass,andseminaroftheexactdateandtimeofthejuries.Juryperformancesareclosedtothepublic,includingfamilyandfriends,althoughtheymayberecordedprovidedtheendeavorisnotdisruptive.Thefacultymayalsorecordjuryexaminationsforarchivalpurposes.Juryrequirementsforthosewithpianoemphasislast15-20minutes,andmustincludeatleast3contrastingmemorizedpieces/movements.Thereisalsoasight-readingelementforeachjury,withthelevelofthesight-readingbeingdeterminedbythenumberofcredithoursstudiedtodate.Whenchoosingrepertoiretostudyandperformoneachjury,youandyourteachershouldconsiderthefollowing:

• Eachyear,thecompositeofthetwojuriesshouldreflectpreparationandunderstandingofavarietyofstyleperiods:Baroque,Classical,Romantic,Impressionist,andModern/Contemporary.

• BytheSophomoreBarrierjury,allfiveofthesestyleperiodsmustberepresented,withatleastoneBaroquecontrapuntalworkatalevelequivalenttoaBachFugueof3or4voices,andatleastoneclassicalsonatabyHaydn,Mozart,Beethoven,Schubert,oranequivalentwork.

• JuriesinthefalloftheJuniorandSenioryearneednotbelimitedtomaterialinpreparationfortherespectivedegreerecitals.Studentsareencouragedtocontinuefillingingapsintheirrepertoireandstyleknowledgewithsmallerpiecesinadditiontothosebeingpreparedforasolorecital.

Juryrequirementsforpianosecondariesornon-majorsalsorequire3contrastingmovements/pieces,butonlyoneneedbememorized.

Beforearrivingatyourjury,besuretofillouttheAppliedJuryReportsheet(includedinthisguide,availableonline,andavailablefromyourappliedinstructor)togivetothefacultypanel.ThosewithpianoemphasisshouldalsofilloutaJuryAdjudicationSheet(includedinthisguideandavailablefromyourappliedinstructor)foreachappliedfacultymemberonthepanel.Ifatanytimeyouareunsureastothejuryrequirementsforyourdegreeplan,pleasespeaktoyourappliedinstructor.Yourjuryrequirementsshouldbemadecleartoyouwithinthefirstlessonsofthesemesterandwillhelptodeterminethefocusofyourstudyforthesemester.Jurygradesaregivenastheaverageofthegradesfromeachfacultymemberonthejurypanel.Althoughtheexactweightofthejurygradeinthefinalsemestergraderemainsatthediscretionoftheappliedteacher,itisthepolicyoftheKeyboardStudiesareathatafinalsemestergradecannotbemorethanoneletterremovedfromyourcompositejurygrade.

MilestonesbyYearFreshmanAdvisoryBeforeenrollingforthesophomoreyearofstudy,eachstudentwillreceivefeedbackfromvariousmusicprofessorsinaprocesscalledtheFreshmanAdvisory(seetheMusicStudentHandbookfordetails).Thisprocessisaformativeprocess,ratherthanasummativeone,andinregardtoappliedstudiesitisanopportunityforthekeyboardfacultytohelpthestudenttogaugehisorherprogressalongthecoursefromtheinitialaudition,totheupcomingSophomoreBarrier,toJuniorandSeniordegreerecitals,andtotheultimategoalofprofessionalcompetencyatgraduation.SophomoreBarrierAnystudentpursuingadegreefromtheDivisionofMusicandhavingpianoastheprimaryinstrumentmustsuccessfullycompleteabarrierexaminationafterfoursemestersofstudy(withaminimumof12credithoursofappliedstudyfortheBMperformancedegreeor8credithoursforallotherdegrees).Theexammustbepassedinorderforthestudenttocontinueinthechosendegreeprogramandtobeadmittedtothejuniorlevelofappliedpianostudy.Iftheexamisnotpassed,thefollowingoptionsareoffered:

1. InthecaseofaBMperformancestudent,changetoBMA,BME,orBMWorshipStudiesifitisfelttherequisitelevelofskillhasbeenmetforoneofthesedegreeprograms.

2. Retaketheexamafteronemoresemesterofstudy.Ifthestudentchoosesthisoptionbutisunsuccessfulinthesecondattempttopasstheexam,thestudentmustchooseanalternateareaofstudyoutsideofpiano.

3. Changetoanotherappliedinstrument,remainingamusicmajor(assumingacceptancebyauditionintoanotherarea).

4. Changetoadegreeoutsideofmusic.PleaseseetheincludedSophomoreBarrierForm,p.2forthefulllistofrequirementsfortheexam.Itisimportanttonotethatthemusicalelementslistedmustbeevidentacrossthefivemajorstyleperiods(Baroque,Classical,Romantic,Impressionist,andModern/Contemporary).ItisalsorequiredthatBaroquerepertoireincludesatleastonecontrapuntalmovementequivalenttoa3-or4-voiceBachfugue,andthatClassicalrepertoireincludesacompletesonatabyHaydn,Mozart,Beethoven,orSchubert,oranequivalentpieceasdeterminedbythekeyboardfaculty.Inadditiontothetechniquerequirementmentionedabove(levels1-3forBMperformancedegreesandlevel1forBMA,BME,andBMWorshipStudies),thefacultywillalsoconsiderthestudent’sperformanceinTheoryandAuralSkillsasreportedbythetheoryfaculty,tomakesurethestudenthastheadequateknowledgebasetosuccessfullycompleteupper-levelstudy.AfterconsideringalloftheelementsoftheSophomoreBarrier,thekeyboardfacultywilldeterminethatthestudenthas1)PassedtheExam,2)Passed,butwithseriousreservations,3)NotPassedtheExam.Iftherearereservationsregardingthestudentcontinuingtoupperdivisionstudyorthestudenthasnotpassed,thereasonswillbeexplainedinwritingbythekeyboardfaculty.

JuniorandSeniorRecitalsApplicationformsforschedulingdegreerecitalsareincludedinthisguideandarealsoavailableonlineandintheFineArtsoffice.Forfallsemesterrecitals,theseformsareduebyApril15.Forspringsemesterrecitals,theformsareduebyOctober1.OtherinformationregardingproceduresforDivisionofMusicJuniorandSeniorRecitalsisavailableintheFineArtsofficeorfromthechairoftheRecitalCommittee.Inkeyboardstudies,theBMPerformancedegreesrequirefulljuniorandseniorrecitals(approximately45-50minutesofmusic).Allotherdegreesinpianorequireahalfseniorrecital(approximately25minutesofmusic).Thepianoteacherwilldeterminetherepertoirethatismostappropriateforeachdegreerecital,consideringthecurrentstrengthspresentinastudent’sabilityaswellasweaknessesyettobeovercome.Attheundergraduatelevel,eachdegreerecitalshouldreflect,asmuchaspossible,abroadunderstandingofeachofthevariousstyleperiods.Timingonasinglerecitalmaynotmakethispossible,sointheeventthatastyleperiodisabsentorunder-representedontheJuniorRecital,itshouldbegivengreaterconsiderationontheSeniorRecital.Beforegivingarecital,studentsmustpassarecitalhearing.Keyboardrecitalhearingsarescheduledatleastfour(4)weeksinadvanceoftheapprovedrecitaldate.ThestudentandteacherwillcompletetheRecitalHearingReport(includedinthisguideandavailableintheFineArtsoffice)andsubmitittotheKeyboardCoordinator,whowillworkwiththestudentandthekeyboardfacultytofindamutuallyacceptabletimeforthehearing.Keyboardfacultywillheartheprograminitsentiretyandwill1)approvetherecital,2)requireapartialre-hearing,3)requireacompleterehearing.Acompleterehearingmaynecessitatethereschedulingoftherecitaltoaccommodatethe4-weekadvancedapprovalrequirement.OtherOpportunitiesThroughoutyourcourseofstudytherewillbenumerousotheropportunitiestoperformandcompete.TheseopportunitiesincludetheOBUConcerto-Ariacompetition,OMTAcompetitions,andstateandregionalevents.Yourteacherwillhelpyoutonavigatewhichoftheseopportunitiesisappropriateforyou.

AdditionalConsiderationsforSuccessHealthEatwell,stayhydrated,andgetplentyofsleep.Itisimportantthatyougiveyourbodythefuelitneedstothinkclearlyandworkmostefficiently.Beingtiredorwithoutpropernourishmentnotonlymakesyoulesseffective,butleavesyoumuchmorepronetoinjury.Yourbrainprocessesinformationwhenyouarerestingandyourbodyrepairsitselfbestduringsleep.Iftimemanagementissuesmakestayinghealthyachallenge,speakwithyourteacherforguidance.ProperbodyusageandtechniquewillbeaddressedthroughoutyourkeyboardstudieseducationatOBU,inlessons,studioclasses,andseminars.However,physicalissuesstillhappen.Ifatanytimeyouareexperiencingpainordiscomfortinyourtechnique,inanyway,pleasespeakwithyourappliedteacherimmediately.Theywillhelpyoutonavigatetheissue,whichmayincludereferringyoutoadoctororphysicaltherapist.Oftenifanissueiscaughtearlyenough,itcanbemanagedwithaslightchangeintechnique.DressThereisnospecificdresscodeinthekeyboarddepartmentforlessonsorstudiowork.However,shoesmustalwaysbewornthatallowforproperpedaltechniqueandChristianmodestyandrespectshouldalwaysbekeptinmind.Forseminarperformances,GeneralRecitals,andjuries,pleasedressprofessionally.Thisdoesnotmeanthatformalattireisrequired(i.e.atuxorformaldress),butthatitshouldbeevidentthattheperformeristakinghisorherartseriously,respectingboththemselvesandtheaudience.Fordegreerecitals,menshouldwearajacket(orvest)andatie.Womenshouldbesurethatdressesallowthemtomovefreelyattheinstrument,withthehemlinefallingbelowthekneeswhilesitting.Again,shoesshouldallowforproperpedaltechnique.Itisimportanttorememberthatmodestyandfashionarenotopposites,andthatone’swardrobeshouldnotdistracttheaudiencefromthemusicbeingperformed.

Any student pursuing a degree from the Division ofMusic and having piano as his/herprimaryinstrumentmustsuccessfullycompleteabarrierexaminationafterfoursemestersofstudy(withaminimumof12credithoursofappliedstudyfortheBMperformancedegreeor8hoursofappliedstudyforallotherdegrees).Theexammustbepassedinorderforthestudenttocontinueinhis/herchosendegreeprogramandtobeadmittedtothejuniorlevelofappliedpianostudy.Transferstudentswilltakethesophomorepianobarrierexamwhentheyhavecompletedorhavebeengrantedcreditforthenumberofrequiredcredithoursofappliedpianostudythatequals those for the barrier of their chosen degree. If a transfer student has alreadycompleted the number of required credit hours at another college or university, thesophomorebarrierexamwillserveashisorherentranceexamintothespecifieddegreeprogram.

Purpose:Tomakecertainthatthestudent’sprogressismorethanadequatetocontinueandsatisfactorilycompletetherequirementsinhisorherspecificdegreeprogram.ThisenablestheOBUDivisionofMusicandDepartmentofKeyboardStudiestomaintainthehighstandardsconsistentwithOBU’sreputationandtofavorablyreflectourmissionandensurethefuturesuccessofourstudents.Consequence:TheBarrierExammustbepassedinorderforthestudenttocontinueintheirchosendegreeprogramandbeadmittedtothejuniorlevelofpianoprimaryappliedstudy.Iftheexamisnotpassed,thefollowingoptionsareoffered:

1. InthecaseofaBMstudent,changetoBMA,BME,orBMWorshipStudiesifitisfelttherequisitelevelofskillhasbeenmetforoneofthesedegreeprograms.
