Making a Shamba

HomesThe Kikuyu live in houses called Shamba’s. They are made from wooden poles, coconut palm leaves and grass.

Linear Kikuyu Settlements

• In the Shamba gardens the Kikuyu grow lots of vegetables and tropical fruits under the shade of the banana trees.

• Subsistence farming – just growing crops for your family.

• Commercial farming – farming to make a profit and sell your goods.

Jobs

The Kikuyu, unlike the Maasai, are arable farmers, they grow crops on the land.

Tea and coffee are grown on the slopes around the Shambas

• The Kikuyu women make and sell handicrafts that they make themselves.
