Good Things from Sydney: The Perfect Laboratory

Kim Solez, MD

Twenty Years Ago Sydney Loomed Large for Me

February and March 1994, I was a rotating visiting professor in several Australia and New Zealand university hospitals sponsored by the Australia and New Zealand Society of Nephrology. In August of that year I was made an honorary member of ANZSN headquartered in Sydney, Australia.

In May 1997 at the International Congress of Nephrology in Sydney I launched NKF cyberNephrology & ISN Informatics Commission. http://cybernephrology.ualberta.ca/misc/NKF_ISN/Speech/Default.htm

NKF cyberNephrology is a direct antecedent of this course on Technology and the Future of Medicine http://www.singularitycourse.comhttp://www.youtube.com/user/kimsolez

Last week it was announced that Sydney based Sonic Healthcare is the successful bidder to take over laboratory services for Northern Alberta for next 15-25 years.

An Amazing Opportunity!

Given the economies of scale that will come with centralization of all lab activity in Northern Alberta, the new facility has the potential to be the best laboratory in Western Canada or perhaps all of Canada. As a teacher of a course on Technology and the Future of Medicine http://www,youtube.com/user/kimsolez http://www.singularitycourse.com I am well aware of utopian scenarios for medicine in general and human society in general, but this is a good opportunity to imagine a utopian scenario for a laboratory. How good could such a laboratory be? I think it could be amazing!

The Perfect Laboratory. A Positive Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Singularity!

No one seems to be writing about this subject, laboratory utopia, the perfect laboratory. It is well work thinking about as something to aim toward! With good planning and marketing an outstanding facility unlike something anyone has ever seen could actually be more profitable with the same initial investment as an ordinary “state-of-the-art-but-no-better” facility. Let’s make it happen! Carpe Diem. Seize the day! No one knows when or where the technological Singularity in general will occur, but let us resolve that the Singularity in Pathology/Laboratory Medicine will occur in Edmonton and very soon!
