TRANSCRIPT

This presentation was created in response to a request by educator teams to update the current information for the Kindergarten Parent Orientation Meeting. This led to the formation of a working group comprised of teachers and ECEs to develop a revised presentation and reflects the system message. The intention was to make it purposeful and relevant to parents at this point in the transition to school process. Please see the notes pages on the slides for details regarding the presentation including the slides that need to be revised to support the specific information for your school.

This has since been revised to include some new information related to the new Kindergarten Program document and Growing Success – The Kindergarten Addendum

You are reminded to invite the Child Care partners to the parent orientation meeting to talk to parents about the before and after school programs. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,Jaclyn Priest-Brown priest-brownj@hcdsb.org

Jesus, Friend and Teacher, you as us

"Who do you say that I am?”

Thank you for inviting us to know you more each day.

Quiet our minds to hear your Word; Open our hearts to love you more;

For the more we know you, the more brightly we reflect you.

You meet us in our every need, your love, new each day!

Guide us as we build your kingdom, And find our home in you;

For you are the Lord, the face of God,

And the breath of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

“Play nourishes every aspect of

children’s development—it forms

the foundation of intellectual,

social, physical, and emotional

skills necessary for success in

school and in life. Play “paves

the way for learning”.

Canadian Council on Learning, Lessons in Learning (2006) cited in The Full-Day Early Learning-Kindergarten Program (Draft), 2010

Children are curious and connect prior knowledge to new experiences in order to understand the world around them.

In Kindergarten, the aim is to

assist children to see traces of

God in and around them.

Spiritual growth takes place

within the home, school, church

and community.

The Kindergarten Program, 2016

• their sense of connectedness to others; • their relationships with others, and their

contributions as part of a group, a community, and the natural world;

• their understanding of relationships and community, and of the ways in which people contribute to the world around them.

• their own thinking and feelings, and their recognition of and respect for differences in the thinking and feelings of others;

• regulating their emotions, adapting to distractions, and assessing consequences of actions in a way that enables them to engage in learning;

• their physical and mental health and wellness.

• communicating thoughts and feelings – through gestures, physical movements, words, symbols, and representations through the use of a variety of materials;

• literacy behaviours, evident in the various ways they use language, images, and materials to express and think critically about ideas and emotions, as they listen and speak, view and represent, and begin to read and write;

• mathematics behaviours, evident in the various ways they use concepts of number and pattern during play and inquiry; access, manage, create, and evaluate information; and experience an emergent understanding of mathematical relationships, concepts, skills, and processes;

• an active engagement in learning and a developing love of learning, which can instil the habit of learning for life.

• exploring the world through natural curiosity, in ways that engage the mind, the senses, the body, and spirit;

• making meaning of their world by asking questions, testing theories, solving problems, and engaging in creative and analytical thinking;

• the innovative ways of thinking about and doing things that arise naturally with an active curiosity, and applying those ideas in relationships with others, with materials, and with the environment.
