AdvancementsinModeling,SensingandControlforHigh-ResolutionAdditiveManufacturing

ABSTRACT:Additivemanufacturing(AM)describesaclassofprocessesthatperformalayer-by-layer“bottom-up”fabricationapproachasopposedtotraditionaltop-down,subtractivefabricationsuchasmillingandlathing.Printing-basedAM,andinparticularmicro-scaleAM(µ-AM),hasreceivedsignificantattentioninrecentyearsasanenablingtechnologycapableofrevolutionizingthewaywemanufactureelectronics,biosensors,andopticsinthiscountry.Meso-scaleAMiscapableoffabricatingintegratedfeaturesbeyondwhatconventionalmachiningcanperformatthislengthscale.However,µ-AMhasyettodemonstratethefabricationofcomplex3Dstructuresatthemicro-scalethatarenotfabricablebytraditionalmicromachining.Limitingthisstepchangeinmanufacturingcapabilitiesistherelianceofμ-AMsystemsonaprocessmonitoring,regulation,andqualitycontrolparadigmthatisperformedpost-processandinanadhocmanner.Inthistalk,wediscusssomerecentdevelopmentsinprocessmodeling,sensing,andcontrolthataimtobreakthisopen-loopparadigmbyprovidingthecontrolstheoreticandprocessmodelingknowledgetodeveloparobustclosed-loopsystemformeasurementandcompensatorycontrol.

BIO:KiraBartonisanAssistantProfessorintheDepartmentofMechanicalEngineeringattheUniversityofMichigan.ShereceivedherB.Sc.inMechanicalEngineeringfromtheUniversityofColoradoatBoulderin2001.ShecontinuedhereducationinmechanicalengineeringattheUniversityofIllinoisatUrbana-ChampaignandcompletedherM.Sc.andPh.D.degreesin2006and2010,respectively.SheheldapostdoctoralresearchpositionattheUniversityofIllinoisfromFall2010untilFall2011,atwhichpointshejoinedtheMechanicalEngineeringDepartmentattheUniversityofMichiganatAnnArbor.Kiraconductsresearchinmodeling,sensing,andcontrolforapplicationsinadvancedmanufacturingandrobotics,withaspecializationinIterativeLearningControlandmicro-additivemanufacturing.KiraistherecipientofanNSFCAREERAwardin2014,2015SMEOutstandingYoungManufacturingEngineerAward,the2015UniversityofIllinois,DepartmentofMechanicalScienceandEngineeringOutstandingYoungAlumniAward,andthe2016UniversityofMichigan,DepartmentofMechanicalEngineeringDepartmentAchievementAward.
