HOW IN THE WORLD CAN PUBLIC RELATIONS

HELP ME BE A BETTER RECRUITER?

Assistant Vice Chancellor for Public Relations

Let’s talk social media…

Are you there?

Are you loving it?

Why should you be there?

The people you want to recruit are there.

Technology is pervasive for teens?

97% own a computer. 94% own a cell phone. 1 in 3 use websites as primary source of

news. 28% own a blog and 44% read blogs. half download music using peer-to-peer file

sharing. 3 in 4 have a Facebook account…

* Taken from, “Connecting to the Net.Generation: What Higher Education Professionals Need to Know About Today’s College Students,” a survey of 7,705 college students.

Technology is pervasive for teens?

3 in 4 use Instant Messaging (IM). 15% of IM users are logged on 24/7. 43% say they use IM to express something

they would NOT say in person. 1 in 5 say they use IM to ask people out or to

accept dates. 13% have used IM to break-up.

* Taken from, “Connecting to the Net.Generation: What Higher Education Professionals Need to Know About Today’s College Students,” a survey of 7,705 college students; and an Associated Press poll published in Time

Magazine, Dec 3, 2007 edition.

Social media: It’s not just for kids. Adults with profiles on social media

platform up from 8% to 35%. Adults are a larger percentage of US

population than teens. So there are more adults on social

media platforms than teens.

It can be a little confusing…

So, where do we begin?

You’ve done this forever

Social networking isn’t new… Telling a friend about a good movie. Sharing pictures of your child, pet or

vacation. Catching up on gossip at work. Social Networking is “reaching out to

people you know to share ideas, experiences and information.”

Social media philosophies Transparency Relevance Consistency Honesty Education “Providing value”

VCCS: Blogging since ‘07

We ramped it up in ‘08

In 2009, we went big!

Where is all of this going? A report released last year from M:Metrics, a mobile-

media research firm, found that Americans browsed the Web an average of 4.6 hours a month from their smartphones, an 89% increase from 2007.

A May study from consulting firm Gravitytank found that app-enabled phone owners spend an average of two hours a day on their devices, with nearly 40% of that time dedicated to app use.

By 2013, smartphones will have doubled their share of the handset market, accounting for 20% of all cellphones, according to market research company In-Stat.

A (possible) plan of action1. Begin a blog

a) A place to post and editorialize

b) Establish your realm, explain what you do

2. Join LinkedIna) Demonstrate your connections within the

community and college

3. Join Twittera) Connect and converse with others, point

them to your blog
