DearBishopOughandtheExecutiveCommitteeoftheCouncilofBishops:OnOctober5th,itwasannouncedthattheexecutivecommitteeoftheCouncilofBishopsestablishedalistofnomineestoserveontheCommissionforAWayForward.WeareexcitedthatthechurchisonestepclosertobeginningtheCommission,butwearedisappointedandconcernedwiththelackoflaityrepresentation.Thegroupof29comprises8bishops,13clergy,andonly8laity.Whilewecelebratethatthisgroupstrivestorepresenttheglobalconnectionandourtheologicaldiversity,wefinditunacceptablethatonly28%oftheCommissionarelaity.Thechurchismadeoflaityandcouldnotfunctionwithoutourvolunteerhours,evangelismandmissions,serviceonvariouscommittees,singinginchoirs,financialcontributions,andsomuchmore.OurBookofDisciplineimplicitlystatesthattheremustbeequalrepresentationonvariousboardsandagencies,committees,annualconferences,jurisdictionalconferences,andatGeneralConference.Beyondwhatisrequired,webringtheworldoutsideofthechurchwithus.Weareteachers,scholars,therapists,theologians,writers,localpastors,activists,CPAs,lawyers,communityorganizers,churchemployees,andmore.Someofusserveundertheappointmentofourbishops,othersaregeneralsecretariesandstaffofourchurch’sgeneralboardsandagencies,andadedicatedlayorderofdeaconessesandhomemissionersliveouttheircalltolayministry.Afreshsetofeyesisneededtomovethechurchforward,yetwearenotbeinggiventheopportunity.Ourvoicesarecrucialinfindingawayforwardforourchurch.Wemustbeofferedanequalvoiceatthetableofchange.Therefore,weimploreyoutorethinkthebalanceofclergyandlaityontheCommissionforAWayForward.Onlytogethercanwecreateawayforward,IreneR.DeMarisValley&MountainFellowshipSeattle,WADeaconessDarleneDiDomineckArchStreetUMCPhiladelphia,PAHomeMissionerKevinNelsonFirstSchenectadyUMCSchenectady,NY
