Project Status: New Ferry

• Service began Monday, February 1 at 5 a.m.• Ferry will operate 24/7, free of charge • 2nd ferry slips anticipated to open in several

weeks • 1700 vehicles crossed on opening day• Seemed like forever to commuters, but was “in

record time,” considering approval processes and design/construction complexities

Project Status—New Ferry

Project Status—Demolition Cleanup• Work continues to remove superstructure from water—will

continue at least through February• Land demo removal will not begin for several weeks

(access causeways needed)• Target date to have spans 6, 7, 8 and piers 6, 7 removed

by April 15 (per USCG)• Remaining portions by June 1 (per USCG)• Steel stored at Port Henry marina. • Most steel will be recycled--some will be kept for

commemoration activities

Corrosion Protection SystemPros Cons

Weathering Steel- Chemical composition

of steel reacts to create a protective layer

• Increased Corrosion Resistance

• No Painting Necessary• Reduced First & Life

Cycle Costs

• Staining• No color choice• Poor performance in

continuously wet environment

Metalizing (in addition)- Zinc and aluminum spray on coating protective layer

• Increased Corrosion Resistance

• No Painting Necessary• May be Field Reapplied• Up to 50 year service life

• Colors Limited• Highest First Cost• Less Industrial

Capability

Specific Suggestions

• Many specific suggestions have been made, ranging from things to do with salvaged steel from the old bridge to specific artists to engage or specific museums to involve

• Some ideas are already happening “organically”– T-shirts– Reflections on our Past (Feb. 19 lecture in Ticonderoga)– Others??

A Process for Commemoration

• No specific near-term deadline• Lots of ideas

– PAC+– Public meeting– Survey– Website comments

• We need to develop a process to get us to a specific implementation plan for commemoration– What exactly should be done– Who will be responsible for making each thing happen

Proposed Commemoration Process

• Form a small, ad hoc Working Group for Commemoration– A few interested PAC members– A few additional Consulting Parties– A few other interested parties (suggestions?)– NY and VT participation

• Sort through all the ideas• Research options/costs/interest• Develop specifics within parameters• Recommend an implementation plan

Approval Process for Commemoration

• Working Group develops implementation plan• PAC review/comment• NYSDOT/VAOT review/comment• Submittal of plan to FHWA for approval• Iterative process
